INTRODUCTION: Ramadan fasting is globally observed and a great majority of the residents of Islamic countries and elsewhere fast during Ramadan all across the world every year. Many patients with type 1 diabetes fast during Ramadan according to (or against) medical and jurisprudence advice. Nonetheless, there is a paucity of scientific evidence regarding the risks patients with diabetes who fast may be confronted with. The current scoping review protocol aims at systematic analysis and mapping of existing literature in the field and highlighting scientific gaps.

Organ transplantation is still the treatment of choice for end-stage organ failure. Despite the establishment of the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation (SCOT), the organ supply still does not meet the increasing demand. This study aims to assess the knowledge of Saudis about organ donation both among the public and the medical staff and to assess the trend in the change from 1996 until now. A cross-sectional study was conducted among Saudis above the age of 18 years. A self-administered, 25-item, questionnaire was completed by participants including both outpatients and medical staff at Ki

A large assemblage (n = 307) of architectural glasses (tesserae and windows) from the early 8th-century Umayyad residential site at Khirbat al-Minya was analysed by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Trace element patterns are essential to establish the provenance of the base glass, while the comparative evaluation of the colouring and opacifying additives allow us to advance a production model for the manufacture of glass mosaic tesserae during the early Islamic period. The primary glass types are Levantine I and Egypt 1a, as well as a few older, reused tesserae, and

The aim of this article is to describe the circumcision procedure during history, its therapeutic and preventive goals, with focus on bioethical, economic and law issues. The origins of this practice are lost in antiquity. It was performed since 3000 BC by the Egyptians for hygienic and religious reasons. Moreover, male circumcision is a religious commandment in Judaism and Islam, and it is customary in some Oriental Orthodox and other Christian churches of Africa. Nowadays, circumcision is performed as a routine procedure by the Jews and the Muslims for religious reasons. The world prevalence

As the great majority of the population in Saudi Arabia is Muslim, the Islamic views about organ donation and transplantation have been the focus of interest to the transplant community in this and other Muslim countries. The first resolution of the Islamic council in Saudi Arabia (Senior Ulama Commission) about organ donation and transplantation was issued in 1982. It permitted tissue and organ transplantation from both living and cadaveric donors. This resolution marked a new era in organ transplantation in Saudi Arabia, leading to the formation of the Saudi Center of organ transplantation (

We aimed at investigating the cosmetic interests, public confidence in cosmetic industry, health knowledge, practice, and need for health education regarding using topical bleaching agents (TPAs) among a relatively big sample size in Al-Madinah (west Saudi Arabia, a conservative eastern society that acquires its social customs from Islam). Islamic values increased women respect and esteem in this society. This is reflected on cosmetic practices and attitude, e.g. women use face cover outdoors. This issue is vital for both women health and beauty, and is rarely discussed. TPAs use is affected b

The psycho-social aspects of 72 murderers (one female, 71 males) were studied. The murderers came from the Khoozestan and the Lorestan provinces of Iran. One of them had been transferred from the north of Iran (probably on exile). The murderers were mostly from lower social classes and crowded homes. The majority of them had worked as unskilled labourers or farmers. A great number of them regretted their action but a few were proud of what they had done. They believed that they had saved the chastity of their family which is very important in Islam. None of them were epileptic nor had any hist

Avicenna, as he is known in the West, was a famous Persian Muslim physician and influential philosopher-scientist of the medieval Islamic world. He wrote and compiled the Canon of Medicine text, a book which was adopted as the main text of medicine at the most Persian and Western universities. The book consists of basic medical sciences, applied clinical sciences and pharmacology. In the current study, we present an analysis of the anatomy of the musculoskeletal and peripheral nervous systems as viewed by Avicenna in the Canon of Medicine, and compare them with the relevant modern literature.

In the past three years, a notable progress has been made in the control of malaria, as suggested by a drastic reduction in malaria morbidity and in the number of active foci. To fulfill the set tasks, there is a need for continuous financing of antimalaria measures by the country's Government, the Global Fund, WHO, and other sponsors. In the Republic of Tadjikistan, there are prerequisites for achieving the elimination of tropical malaria by 2010; however, it is necessary to collaborate with the Islamic State of Afghanistan for prophylactic measures to be implemented to prevent importation of

The European and Eastern Mediterranean regions of the World Health Organization (WHO) have made substantial progress toward the goal of eradicating poliomyelitis by 2000. As of June 1998, only two foci of known wild poliovirus transmission remained in the border areas of these two WHO regions: southeastern Turkey/northern Iraq and Tadjikistan/Afghanistan. This report summarizes progress toward interruption of wild poliovirus transmission in the bordering areas of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Republic of Iraq, the Syrian Arab Republic, and Turkey.

The author diagnosed and treated 66 cases of fungus mycetomae during his two years of assignment at the Nouakchott national hospital (Islamic Republic of Mauritania). Recent coming out of the youngest generation of an antifungus drug: ketoconazole, leads the author to change his therapeutic attitude towards such tumours. This article reports on promising results got by an original medico-surgical association. The interest of such a treatment is also underlined by the poor results of the classical treatment, solely surgical, when it tries to be conservative.

Labia minora that protrude past the labia majora are aesthetically and functionally unsatisfactory to some women. Historically, female circumcision has been practiced in Islamic/Arabic countries for many centuries and is still commonly practiced in these countries. Three case reports present middle-aged women who were dissatisfied with the size and protuberance of the labia minora, and an aesthetic labioplasty was performed in these three women. The technical aspects of this procedure are outlined, and a representative case with 3-month follow-up is presented pictorially.

The assumption that civilization was originated in the East, was one of the most important points emphasized by the intelligentsia of the late Ottoman reign. This conviction was appreciated in the thought of Ahmed Cevdet Pasha (1823 - 1895), a famous figure of the period. Cevdet Pasha, who believed that the source of science and education was started in the East, claimed that Europe was acquainted with Islamic science during the Crusades. In this paper Cevdet Pasha's ideas related with small-pox, cholera, plague, poisons and microbes are mentioned. This study is based on Cevdet Pasha's documen

BACKGROUND: Islamic beliefs are associated with decreased contraceptive use compared to other religions, and Muslim women's contraceptive needs are often unmet. Research is needed to provide an in-depth understanding of the complex set of barriers to Muslim women's contraceptive use. Therefore, we aimed to explore Muslim women's awareness and experiences with family planning in Saudi Arabia and investigate barriers to contraceptive use and access to family planning.
METHODS: A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with women in a public hospital, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between

RESULTS: Jewish, Islamic and Indian religions support prolonged breastfeeding. Religious avoidance of alcohol is probably benefi
