No evidence for parasitism-linked changes in immune function or oxidative physiology over the annual cycle of an avian species.

Temporally changing environmental conditions occur in most parts of the world and can exert strong pressure on the immune defense of organisms. Seasonality may result in changes in physiological traits over the year, and such changes may be essential for the optimization of defense against infections. Evidence from field and laboratory studies suggest the existence of links between environmental conditions, such as infection risk, and the ability of animals to mount an immune response or to overcome infections; however, the importance of parasites in mediating seasonal change in immune defense

Occurrence of Selected Zoonotic Fecal Pathogens and First Molecular Identification of Hafnia paralvei in Wild Taihangshan Macaques (Macaca mulatta tcheliensis) in China.

Rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) are hosts to a range of zoonotic and potentially zoonotic pathogens. The present study firstly provides a broader investigation of the presence and prevalence of zoonotic fecal pathogens in wild Taihangshan macaques, a subspecies of rhesus macaque in China. A total of 458 fecal samples were collected between September 2015 and November 2016. Fourteen genera of intestinal parasites (four genera of protozoans and ten genera of helminths) and twelve genera of bacteria were tested for using PCR amplification. The overall samples prevalence of parasitic infection wa

[Dog and fox faecal contamination of farmland].

The contamination with faeces from dogs and foxes was documented on 14 different grassland areas in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland, over one year. A total of 402 dog and 58 fox faecal samples were collected from the grasslands, further 236 faecal samples were retrieved from Robidog® units (disposal units for dog waste bags) in the immediate vicinity. The degree of fecal contamination per 100 m2 and year was 0.07-0.75 for dog samples and 0-0.06 for fox samples. Dog faeces from Robidog® units and grasslands contained stages of the following parasites, respectively (sedimentation/flotation met

Intestinal and lung parasites in owned dogs and cats from central Italy.

Prevalence and risk factors of intestinal and lung parasites were investigated in 239 owned dogs and 81 owned cats from central Italy. In 36 dogs and 20 cats found infected by nematodes, pre and post-treatment faecal egg count (FEC) was also evaluated. About 31% of dogs and about 35% of cats resulted positive for at least one intestinal or lung parasitic species. Helminthic, intestinal and zoonotic infections resulted prevalent in examined animals. Examined dogs resulted infected by Toxocara canis (13.0%), Toxascaris leonina (1.7%), Trichuris vulpis (3.3%), Ancylostoma caninum (2.0%), Uncinari

Enteric parasites in HIV-1/AIDS-infected patients from a Northwestern São Paulo reference unit in the highly active antiretroviral therapy era.

INTRODUCTION: We describe the epidemiology of intestinal parasites in patients from an AIDS reference service in Northeastern São Paulo, Brazil. METHODS: Retrospective evaluation was done for all HIV-1/AIDS-positive patients whose Hospital de Base/São José do Rio Preto laboratorial analysis was positive for enteroparasites after diagnosis of HIV-1 infection, from January 1998 to December 2008. Statistical analysis was performed using the R statistical software version 2.4.1. The level of significance adopted was 5%. RESULTS: The most frequent protozoan was Isospora belli (4.2%), followed by

Prevalence of intestinal parasites, including Cryptosporidium parvum, in dogs in Zaragoza city, Spain.

Faecal samples from 81 dogs aged between 2 months and 13 years were collected in the small animal clinic (37 domestic dogs) and the animal shelter (44 stray dogs) located in the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences in Zaragoza city (northeast Spain) and screened for the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts. Faeces were concentrated by the formalin-ethyl acetate method and smears of the sediment were stained by using the modified Ziehl-Neelsen technique. Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts were detected in six dogs (7.4%) aged from 2 months to 6 years. Infection was detected in both domestic (three) and st

[Study on the presence of Cryptosporidium in Umbria].

Cryptosporidium is an intestinal protozoan parasite belonging to the same family as Isospora and Toxoplasma. Cryptosporidium can cause severe, life-threatening enteritis in immunocompromised patients; he can also cause much less severe diarrhea in immunocompetent humans and in several animal species. Cryptosporidiosis has been diagnosed by identification of characteristic cocysts in fecal smear. In order to detect the small numbers of oocysts excreted, a modified Teleman-Miyagawa concentration technique was used. After, the faecal smears were stained by means of the dimethyl-sulfoxide (DMSO) a

Refractory isosporiasis.

The authors describe a case of severe debilitating diarrhea due to isosporiasis in a two year old child, a known case of systemic vasculitis receiving prolonged corticosteroids therapy, an association rarely reported previously. It was refractory to treatment with dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor combined with sulfonamide such as cotrimoxazole to which isosporiasis usually responds well and is being described here for clinical interest and uniqueness of its presentation and laboratory findings.

Parasitic gastroenteritis.

Parasitic causes of diarrhea are common in pediatric patients and have important public health implications. Therefore, diagnosis should be pursued vigorously in the appropriate clinical setting. Giardia and Cryptosporidium infections are the most common causes of disease in the United States, and stool examination for ova and parasites is the best way to make the diagnosis. This should be performed three times, on alternate days, in order to rule out parasitic disease with confidence. In treatment of Giardia, it is important to interrupt transmission, particularly in the day-care setting. Bec

The prevalence of human intestinal protozoa in Ibadan, Nigeria.

This study shows that the two intestinal protozoa, Giardia lamblia, Balantidium coli in addition to Entamoeba histolytica are prevalent in the Ibadan population and are responsible for many of the non-bacterial diarrhoea seen in patients. A high seasonal prevalence of the intestinal protozoa in the dry months of the year was associated with the use of contaminated water. Both the high infection rates recorded in adults and children under five years old, and the high frequency of association involving Trichomonas hominis, Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia were discussed.

[Isosporiasis in an elderly patient with chronic diseases: case report].

Isospora belli is a coccidian protozoon that can cause serious diarrhea especially in immunocompromised patients. The laboratory diagnosis depends primarily on the identification of oocysts in stool specimens by direct microscopic examination with iodine or special stains. This case is presented in order to draw attention to isosporiasis among the diarrheas that can be seen in elderly patients with several chronic diseases. A 81 year-old debilitated male, who had a history of hypertension, Alzheimer's disease, previous cerebrovascular accident and right hemiplegia, was admitted to our hospital

Parasitic colitides.

Parasitic infections are a major worldwide health problem, and they account for millions of infections and deaths each year. Most of the infections as well as the morbidity and mortality from these diseases occur in the developing world in rural regions. However, these diseases have become more common in Western countries and in big cities over the past 25 years. These changing disease patterns can be attributed to emigration from the third world to developed countries and migration of rural populations to the big cities in developing nations. These parasitic infections have protean manifestat

[Intestinal parasitosis in French West Indies: endemic evolution from 1991 to 2003 in the University Hospital of Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe].

Guadeloupe is one of the French West Indies, where, until 1960, intestinal parasitic infections were endemic. In the microbiological laboratory of the university hospital of the island, we carried out a retrospective study of the 17,660 stool examinations received from 1991 to 2003. All the stool specimens were examined using at least a wet mount preparation and a concentration method (Bailenger). Specific techniques such as Ziehl-Neelsen modified acid fast stain, chromotrope staining procedure or Baermann's technique were used when indicated. A parasite considered as really pathogenic is dete

Intestinal protozoa important to poultry.

Parasites of two groups are important in poultry, the coccidia and the mastiogophora (flagellates) (Table 1). Most of the Coccidia in poultry are in the genus Eimeria, but a few species of Isospora, Cryptosporidium, and Sarcosporidia are represented. The Eimeria are best known, with seven important species recognized in chickens and several others in turkeys. Diagnosis of coccidiosis is by recognition of classic signs and lesions, by gross examination, and can be aided by microscopic examination of feces and intestinal contents. Control of coccidiosis is by preventive use of anticoccidials and

The occurrence of zoonotic parasites in rural dog populations from northern Portugal.

A survey of intestinal parasites in dogs was carried out in a rural region around Cantanhede, in northern Portugal, where 301 dog faecal samples were collected from small-ruminant farms. Saturated salt flotation and formol-ether sedimentation techniques were used. An enquiry was conducted in 234 farms and a risk factor evaluation for zoonotic helminths was determined among the 195 farmers who owned dogs. The overall parasite prevalence in faecal samples of dogs was 58.8%, with specific prevalences for Ancylostomidae being 40.9% followed by species of Trichuris (29.9%), Toxocara (8%), Isospora

Waterborne transmission of protozoan parasites: a worldwide review of outbreaks and lessons learnt.

At least 325 water-associated outbreaks of parasitic protozoan disease have been reported. North American and European outbreaks accounted for 93% of all reports and nearly two-thirds of outbreaks occurred in North America. Over 30% of all outbreaks were documented from Europe, with the UK accounting for 24% of outbreaks, worldwide. Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium parvum account for the majority of outbreaks (132; 40.6% and 165; 50.8%, respectively), Entamoeba histolytica and Cyclospora cayetanensis have been the aetiological agents in nine (2.8%) and six (1.8%) outbreaks, respectively,
