Belgian endive-derived biostimulant activity in Arabidopsis, lettuce, and sweet pepper at different developmental stages, environmental conditions, and application methods.

Belgian endive-derived biostimulant (BEE) has been previously shown to enhance root and shoot growth of Arabidopsis thaliana and Plectranthus esculentus in in vitro culturing conditions. In this study, we evaluated the effect of BEE on A. thaliana subjected to abiotic stresses and assessed the translatability of its bioactivity to lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum) grown in substrate and soil. A first set of experiments tested the impact of BEE on protection during and on recovery after osmotic or salt (NaCl) stress. BEE treatment had little to no restorative effect wh

Comparative immunomodulatory and gut microbiota-regulating effects of macroalgal polysaccharides in cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppressed mice.

Polysaccharides derived from macroalgae exhibit potent immunomodulatory and gut-regulatory activities; however, comprehensive comparisons of their differential bioactivities remain scarce. This study systematically evaluated the immunomodulatory potential of structurally distinct polysaccharides extracted from Sargassum fusiforme (SP) and Ulva lactuca (UP) in a cyclophosphamide (CTX)-induced immunosuppressed mouse model. Structural analyses revealed that SP consisted mainly of fucose (64.5%) and galactose (20.4%) with molecular masses of 95.6 and 1.4 kDa, while UP was primarily composed of glu

Microbiological assessment of irrigation water from the Boumerzoug River, Algeria, and associated contamination of fresh vegetables.

The use of microbiologically contaminated surface water for irrigation poses a significant threat to food safety and public health, particularly in regions where untreated or inadequately treated wastewater is discharged into rivers used for agricultural purposes. In northeastern Algeria, the Boumerzoug River represents an important source of irrigation water for vegetable production; however, information regarding its microbiological quality and the potential contamination of irrigated vegetables remains limited. This study aimed to assess the microbiological quality of irrigation water from

The major resistance gene cluster in lettuce is highly duplicated and spans several megabases.

At least 10 Dm genes conferring resistance to the oomycete downy mildew fungus Bremia lactucae map to the major resistance cluster in lettuce. We investigated the structure of this cluster in the lettuce cultivar Diana, which contains Dm3. A deletion breakpoint map of the chromosomal region flanking Dm3 was saturated with a variety of molecular markers. Several of these markers are components of a family of resistance gene candidates (RGC2) that encode a nucleotide binding site and a leucine-rich repeat region. These motifs are characteristic of plant disease resistance genes. Bacterial artifi

Biochar and theaflavins mitigate the antibiotic resistome and antibiotic-resistant pathogens in a soil-lettuce continuum.

Antibiotic resistance can be transferred into the food chain, leading to increased risks to human health from ready-to-eat vegetables. Mitigating the transmission of antibiotic resistance from soil to vegetables by green materials is of great significance. Here, we deciphered the roles of biochar and theaflavins in mitigating antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant pathogens (ARPs) in a soil-lettuce continuum. Metagenomic results showed that biochar led to a significant decrease in the abundance of ARGs in lettuce leaves, while theaflavins contributed to a significant reduc

Effect of peeling, cutting, or shredding of lettuce, carrot, or potato on the efficacy of chlorine disinfection.

Minimally processed vegetables are washed and subsequently disinfected by immersion in water solutions with antimicrobials which reduce the initial pathogenic or spoilage microbial load. Chlorine remains one of the most widely used disinfectants for vegetables and hence the importance of studying its properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of peeling, cutting, and shredding on the effectiveness of chlorine (200 ppm) as a disinfectant in lettuce, carrot, and potato. Three independent repetitions of each experiment were completed, and data was statistically analyzed. Results

Modeling logistic performance in quantitative microbial risk assessment.

In quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA), food safety in the food chain is modeled and simulated. In general, prevalences, concentrations, and numbers of microorganisms in media are investigated in the different steps from farm to fork. The underlying rates and conditions (such as storage times, temperatures, gas conditions, and their distributions) are determined. However, the logistic chain with its queues (storages, shelves) and mechanisms for ordering products is usually not taken into account. As a consequence, storage times-mutually dependent in successive steps in the chain-cann

A hairpin conformational change-mediated SRH cascade isothermal amplification assisted electrochemical biosensor for Listeria monocytogenes detection.

The rapid and sensitive detection of foodborne pathogens is crucial for safeguarding food safety and public health. In this study, we developed an electrochemical biosensor based on a hairpin conformational change-mediated cascade isothermal amplification strategy for the detection of Listeria monocytogenes in food. The biosensor employs aptamers for specific recognition of the target bacterium. In combination with magnetic separation technology, the concentration of the target bacterium is converted into that of a trigger strand. The trigger strand induces a conformational change in the hairp

Dynamics of Listeria monocytogenes and the microbiome on fresh-cut cantaloupe and romaine lettuce during storage at refrigerated and abusive temperatures.

Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) outbreaks and recalls associated with fresh produce in recent years have heightened concerns and demands from industry and consumers to more effectively mitigate the contamination risk of this foodborne pathogen on fresh produce. In this study, the growth of Lm and indigenous bacteria on fresh-cut cantaloupe and romaine lettuce held at refrigerated (4 °C) and abusive (10-24 °C) temperatures was determined by both culture dependent and independent methods. Composition and dynamics of bacterial communities on Lm inoculated and non-inoculated samples were analyzed by 1

Effectiveness of amendments on the spread and phytotoxicity of contaminants in metal-arsenic polluted soil.

A metal-arsenic polluted soil from sulphide-mine waste was treated, in all possible combinations, with two different amounts of marble sludge (98% CaCO3), compost (41% organic carbon), and Byferrox (70% Fe). Lixiviate and pore water from each treated and untreated soil were analysed, and lettuce-seed bioassays were performed. None of the treatments decreased the electrical conductivity of lixiviates or the concentrations of all pollutants found in both solutions. Marble sludge and compost increased the pH values and decreased the zinc, cadmium, copper, and lead concentrations in both solutions

Determining toxicity of lead and zinc runoff in soils: salinity effects on metal partitioning and on phytotoxicity.

When assessing cationic metal toxicity in soils, metals are often added to soil as the chloride, nitrate, or sulfate salts. In many studies, the effects of these anions are ignored or discounted; rarely are appropriate controls included. This study used five soils varying in pH, clay content, and organic matter to determine whether salinity from counter-ions contributed to or confounded metal phytotoxicity. Varying rates of Pb and Zn were applied to soils with or without a leaching treatment to remove the metal counter-ion (NO3-). Lactuca sativa (lettuce) plants were grown in metal-treated soi

Evaluation of two fiber optic-based solar collection and distribution systems for advanced space life support.

Growing plants in an enclosed controlled environment is crucial in developing bioregenerative life-support systems (BLSS) for space applications. The major challenge currently facing a BLSS is the extensive use of highly energy-intensive electric light sources, which leads to substantial energy wastes through heat dissipations by these lamps. An alternative lighting strategy is the use of a solar irradiance collection, transmission, and distribution system (SICTDS). Two types of fiber optic-based SICTDS, a Fresnel-lens Himawari and a parabolic-mirror optical waveguide (OW) lighting system, wer

Leonardite-derived humic substances enhance phosphorus use efficiency in lettuce through integrated physiological and metabolic reprogramming.

Phosphorus (P) is essential for plant growth, and its deficiency significantly limits crop productivity. Plant biostimulants offer a sustainable approach to enhance plant tolerance to nutrient stress and reduce fertilizer use. Among these, humic substances (HS) derived from leonardite show promise, though their physiological effects under P deficiency remain unclear. This study evaluated the impact of a leonardite-derived HS on lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) grown under two P regimes: high P (HP, 1 mM) and low P (LP, 0.2 mM). HS were applied at two concentrations via root (R1: 0.40; R2: 0.60 mL L

Heavy metal stress in native plant species: investigating phytoremediation potential through physiological and ISSR/SCoT molecular assessments.

In emerging countries, increased industrial activity has a significant impact on economic growth and urban development. However, the acceleration of industrial processes is accompanied by the release of contaminants such as heavy metals. According to the World Health Organization, one-fourth of all human diseases are caused by environmental contaminants, including heavy metals, which can impair numerous organs such as the neurological system, liver, and reproductive systems. This increased efforts to find effective and sustainable methods to remove heavy metals. Phytoremediation is an environm
