A crucial aspect of bilingual communication is the ability to identify the language of an input. Yet, the neural and cognitive basis of this ability is largely unknown. Moreover, it cannot be easily incorporated into neuronal models of bilingualism, which posit that bilinguals rely on the same neural substrates for both languages and concurrently activate them even in monolingual settings. Here we hypothesized that bilinguals can employ language-specific sublexical (bigram frequency) and lexical (orthographic neighborhood size) statistics for language recognition. Moreover, we investigated the

This report concerns the speech and language outcomes of young adults (N = 242) who participated in a 14-year, prospective, longitudinal study of a community sample of children with (n = 114) and without (n = 128) speech and/or language impairments. Participants were initially identified at age 5 and subsequently followed at ages 12 and 19. Direct assessments were conducted in multiple domains (communicative, cognitive, academic, behavioral, and psychiatric) at all three time periods. Major findings included (a) high rates of continued communication difficulties in those with a history of impa

INTRODUCTION: Children with an intellectual disability (ID) often manifest a developmental language disorder (DLD). However, conventional standardized DLD diagnostic tools often prove unsuitable for this population. Furthermore, no guidelines are provided on how speech and language pathologists (SLPs) should conduct the assessment. This study investigated how practitioners in German-speaking countries assess DLD in children with ID, including the role of multilingualism and practitioners' self-perceived competence.
METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 102 practitioners

Children's numeracy skills at school entry predict future educational attainment. Deaf and hard-of-hearing students are reported to underperform compared with typically hearing peers in mathematics. This study examined the impact of language experience on cardinal principle (CP) knowledge and accuracy in generating large sets in 58 hearing and 120 deaf and hard-of-hearing children ages 3.1-7.6 years who were learning spoken English and/or American Sign Language (ASL). The 178 children represented diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds; 77 were assigned male at birth. Logistic re

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent differences in social communication and interaction, as well as restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. Language difficulties are common in autism and can affect multiple domains, including phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. This study examined the language and repetition skills of Turkish-speaking autistic children (diagnosed with ASD), children with developmental language disorder (DLD), and typically developing (TD) peers. Ninety children aged

BACKGROUND: Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders, affecting an estimated two students in every class of 30. Due to the importance of language for learning, students with DLD are at heightened risk for difficulties in the classroom and require high quality teaching and support. Despite this need, there is a lack of systematic evidence for whole class interventions and strategies targeting this population. Further, teachers and other professionals frequently rely on internet searches to identify ways to support students with DLD in the clas

PURPOSE: Recent technological advancements in psychology have yielded multiple unsupervised online tools for measuring cognitive skills. However, these tools do not measure key features of communication abilities in adults, such as productive speech or oral language. To address this gap, we developed the Remote Adult Language Experiment (ReAL-E) using a three-step approach that incorporates domain identification, expert evaluation, and piloting testing.
METHOD: Step 1 focused on domain and task identification by collaborating with experts and reviewing the literature. Step 2 included two roun

OBJECTIVE: The British Sign Language Cognitive Screening Test (BSL-CST) is a culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate tool for deaf BSL signing older adults in the United Kingdom. There are no equivalent tools for Australian Sign Language (Auslan) to ensure diagnostic accuracy for Auslan signers. We aimed to translate/adapt the BSL-CST into Auslan and establish its preliminary psychometric properties.
METHODS: The Auslan-CST was developed through consultation with deaf Auslan signers and Auslan interpreters, informed by evidenced-based translation standards and production guideline

Recent evidence suggests that deaf children with CIs exposed to nonnative sign language from hearing parents can attain age-appropriate vocabularies in both sign and spoken language. It remains to be explored whether deaf children with CIs who are exposed to early nonnative sign language, but only up to implantation, also benefit from this input and whether these benefits also extend to memory abilities, which are strongly linked to language development. The present study examined the impact of deaf children's early short-term exposure to nonnative sign input on their spoken language and their

PURPOSE: Most research on language acquisition and impairments is neutral to work setting; however, work settings (e.g., schools, health care) are expected to differ in alignment with overlaid workplace models (e.g., education, medical). These differences may affect clinical service provision for individuals with specific language impairment (SLI). This article evaluates potential effects of work setting on top-down advocacy initiatives and clinical service provision for children with symptoms of SLI.
METHOD: Speech-language pathologists serving pediatric populations in health care-based (n =

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine relations between teachers' conversational techniques and language gains made by their deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Specifically, we considered teachers' reformulations of child utterances, language elicitations, explicit vocabulary and syntax instruction, and wait time.
METHOD: This was an observational, longitudinal study that examined the characteristics of teacher talk in 25 kindergarten through second-grade classrooms of 68 deaf and hard-of-hearing children who used spoken English. Standardized assessments provided measures of child voc

PURPOSE: It is widely acknowledged that parental input plays an important role in typical language development. Less is known about the input provided to children with (suspected) developmental language disorder (DLD) or those at risk for DLD. These children may not benefit from parental input in the same way as their typically developing peers, and different aspects of parental input may be more important for them. The present systematic literature review aimed to uncover (a) how parental input has been assessed in the context of DLD, (b) which aspects of parental input have been studied, and

In American Sign Language (ASL) spatial relationships are conveyed by the location of the hands in space, whereas English employs prepositional phrases. Using event-related fMRI, we examined comprehension of perspective-dependent (PD) (left, right) and perspective-independent (PI) (in, on) sentences in ASL and audiovisual English (sentence-picture matching task). In contrast to non-spatial control sentences, PD sentences engaged the superior parietal lobule (SPL) bilaterally for ASL and English, consistent with a previous study with written English. The ASL-English conjunction analysis reveale

It is controversial as to how age of acquisition (AoA) and proficiency level of the second language influence the similarities and differences between the first (L1) and the second (L2) language brain networks. In this functional MRI study, we used representational similarity analysis to quantify the degree of neural similarity between L1 and L2 during sentence comprehension tasks in 26 adult Chinese-English bilinguals, who learned English as L2 at different ages and had different proficiency levels. We found that although L1 and L2 processing activated similar brain regions, greater neural pa

This longitudinal study investigated the effects of maternal emotional health concerns, on infants' home language environment, vocalization quantity, and expressive language skills. Mothers and their infants (at 6 and 12 months; 21 mothers with depression and or anxiety and 21 controls) provided day-long home-language recordings. Compared with controls, risk group recordings contained fewer mother-infant conversational turns and infant vocalizations, but daily number of adult word counts showed no group difference. Furthermore, conversational turns and infant vocalizations were stronger predic

This study explores the use of other-initiations of repair by children with developmental language disorder (DLD). The data are children's video-recorded language assessment sessions, speech-language therapy sessions and two kinds of non-institutional play sessions, parent-child and peer play. The videotapes were transcribed following CA conventions focusing on speech and relevant embodied actions. Other-initiations of repair were identified, collected and analyzed. The analysis focuses on open requests and candidate understandings which were the two most common types of other-initiation of re
