Socio-economic status and language acquisition: children's performance on the new Reynell Developmental Language Scales.

BACKGROUND: Several studies in recent years have indicated a link between socio-economic status (SES) of families and children's language development, including studies that have measured children's language through formal standardized test procedures. High numbers of children with low performance have been found in lower socio-economic groups in some studies. This has proved a cause for concern for both clinicians and educationalists. AIMS: To investigate the relationship between maternal education and postcode-related indicators of SES, and children's performance on the New Reynell Developm

Collaborative working in speech and language therapy for children with DLD-What are parents' needs?

BACKGROUND: Collaborative practice between therapists and parents is a key element of family-centred care and is essential if we want to address family priorities and needs in interventions. However, collaborative practice is challenging for speech and language therapists (SLTs) and parents. To facilitate collaboration, collaborative practices need to be implemented into speech and language therapy for young children with developmental language disorders (DLD) and their families. Actual change and implementation of collaboration in practice will be successful only when it corresponds with pati

The relationship between developmental language disorder and dyslexia in European Portuguese school-aged children.

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) [Also referred to as Specific Language Impairment (SLI)] and dyslexia are neurodevelopmental disorders which show similar behavioral manifestations. In this study, between-group comparisons and frequency analysis were combined to investigate the relationship between DLD and dyslexia. European Portuguese children aged 7-10 years, with DLD (N = 7) or dyslexia (N = 11) were recruited and compared to age-matched typically developing (TD) children (N = 21) on phonological processing, language andf literacy measures. The between-group comparison revealed that fo

Language and Repetition Performance in Autism Spectrum Disorder Versus Developmental Language Disorder: Evidence From Turkish-Speaking Children.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent differences in social communication and interaction, as well as restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. Language difficulties are common in autism and can affect multiple domains, including phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. This study examined the language and repetition skills of Turkish-speaking autistic children (diagnosed with ASD), children with developmental language disorder (DLD), and typically developing (TD) peers. Ninety children aged

Evaluating Sex Differences in Language Abilities Within Down Syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Peroxiredoxin 2 (Prdx2) functions as an antioxidant and may be involved in acute brain injury. This study aimed to investigate whether Prdx2 can act as a serological marker for assessing the severity and forecasting stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP), early neurological deterioration (END), and neurological outcomes in acute intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). METHODS: A collective of 167 patients with ICH and 61 controls underwent quantifications for serum Prdx2 levels. In addition, 61 of them allowed Prdx2 measurements on days 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, and 14 post-ICH. Admission National Insti

Developmental Language Differences in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Possible Sex Difference.

Developmental difference is a common characteristic of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with unclear sex differences. The current study included 610 children with ASD, aged between 2 and 7 years, with completed language profiles. We used a nonparametric item response theory model called Mokken scale analysis to examine the order of acquisition of developmental language milestones in children with ASD. Our results demonstrated the developmental language differences in the expressive and receptive language dimensions in children with ASD compared with typical developmental sequences. Furthermore,

Phonological error patterns in developmental verbal dyspraxia.

Phonological error patterns are analyzed in a group of 10 children presenting symptoms consistent with Developmental Verbal Dyspraxia. Results indicate a dominance of "sequentially constrained" errors primarily involving sound and syllable omissions and timing errors. Rank-order correlations among the phonological errors and between phonological errors and developmental indices suggest that these children have a specific expressive language problem dominated by phonological errors of sequential reduction. Interpretation of the data points to a central motor planning deficit. Comparisons are ma

Mode-relations in language learning by language-deficient retarded subjects.

The relationship between language comprehension and production was examined with two severely language-deficient retarded subjects who were taught the plural form /z/. Comprehension and production were trained concurrently with different words in each mode until correct plural use occurred in the untrained mode for each word. Subsequent training of reversed plural use in comprehension for one subject and production for the other failed to result in reversed plural use in the untrained modes for those words. This mode-independence contrasted with interdependence displayed by normal children in

Morphological Errors in Spanish-Speaking Bilingual Children With and Without Developmental Language Disorders.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to find morphological markers with good diagnostic accuracy to identify developmental language disorders (DLD) in Spanish-English bilingual children. Method The participants in this study included 66 Spanish-English bilingual children between the ages of 4;0 and 6;11 (years;months) with (n = 33) and without DLD (n = 33). We employed a comprehensive production task in Spanish to elicit morphological structures that have been previously found to be problematic for Spanish-speaking children with DLD. These structures included elements of nominal morphology (a

Effects of a Complexity-Based Approach on Generalization of Past Tense -ed and Related Morphemes.

PURPOSE: In a previous article, we reported that beginning treatment for regular past tense -ed with certain types of verbs led to greater generalization in children with developmental language disorder than beginning treatment with other types of verbs. This article provides updated data from that study, including the addition of data from 3 children, results from naturalistic language samples, and data from a third time point. METHOD: Twenty 4- to 9-year-old children with developmental language disorder (10 per condition) were randomly assigned to receive language intervention in which the

Language development in children with spina bifida.

Spina bifida meningomyelocele (SBM) is the most common severely disabling birth defect in North America. It is a disorder of the central nervous system that includes, in addition to the defining spinal dysraphism, congenital malformations of the cerebellum and corpus callosum that, along with hydrocephalus, produces a range of cognitive and motor difficulties, including language. In the language domain, many children with SBM demonstrate adequate development of language at the level of form and content (grammar and lexicon). However, most children with SBM experience significant difficulties i

Feature-driven classification reveals potential comorbid subtypes within childhood apraxia of speech.

BACKGROUND: Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with heterogeneous communication and other comorbid manifestations. While previous studies have characterized speech deficits associated with CAS, few studies have examined variability in reading and language and/or other developmental comorbidities. We sought to identify comorbid subgroups within CAS that could be clinically relevant as well as genetically distinctive. METHODS: In a group of 31 children with CAS and 8 controls, we performed hierarchical cluster analysis utilizing measures of articulation, vocabula

Applying a Developmental Model to Preliterate Aided Language Learning.

PURPOSE: Childhood spoken language interventions and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) interventions share a common purpose: maximizing communication and language outcomes. To ensure that interventions for children who require AAC also address expressive language acquisition, this clinical focus article focuses on how to apply a developmental model of language acquisition to guide AAC decision making for preliterate aided communicators, with a particular focus on vocabulary selection. METHOD: A brief review of early expressive language development is presented, along with argum

Efficacy of a Supplemental Small-Group Early Literacy Intervention Implemented by Early Childhood Educators.

PURPOSE: Phonological awareness and alphabet knowledge are fundamental building blocks for literacy development. We identified preschoolers with persistent delays in these skills and evaluated the efficacy of a supplemental curriculum to remediate deficits in early literacy skills. METHOD: Using a cluster design, 21 classrooms were randomly assigned to early literacy versus language intervention conditions. Sixty children identified through fall semester assessments of phonological awareness and alphabet knowledge were enrolled in small-group instruction. Teachers completed eLearning modules,

SPICES: Disclosure Practices to Help Caregivers Digest a Diagnosis of Developmental Language Disorder.

PURPOSE: Recent studies of the experiences of caregivers of children with language disorders have suggested that speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are not clearly and effectively providing caregivers with a comprehensible diagnostic term for their child's difficulties. Since the work of the CATALISE consortium, there has been a mounting consensus around the use of the term developmental language disorder (DLD) to identify primary, persistent language problems beginning in childhood. Thanks to the increasing unification of SLPs around the term DLD, the time is ripe to directly address clinica

Word Learning by Preschool-Age Children With Developmental Language Disorder: Impaired Encoding and Robust Consolidation During Slow Mapping.

Purpose Learning novel words, including the specific phonemes that make up word forms, is a struggle for many individuals with developmental language disorder (DLD). Building robust representations of words includes encoding during periods of input and consolidation between periods of input. The primary purpose of the current study is to determine differences between children with DLD and with typical development (TD) in the encoding and consolidation of word forms during the slow mapping process. Method Preschool-age children (DLD = 9, TD = 9) were trained on nine form-referent pairs across m
