Lingual frenectomy and alveolar tap production: an acoustic and perceptual study.

In this phonetic study, productions of the consonant in the stressed syllable position of the word arara as produced by 13 subjects with short and/or anterior lingual frenulum were compared before and after lingual frenectomy. The results from the measurement of the stressed consonant duration and from the identification of the consonant manners of articulation based on the inspection of spectral characteristics are discussed and related to the answers to a perceptual identification test. After surgery, the number of tap productions did not increase, but alveolar productions did. These clinica

A functional haplotype variant in the TBX22 promoter is associated with cleft palate and ankyloglossia.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the T-box transcription factor gene TBX22 are found in patients with X-linked cleft palate and ankyloglossia (CPX), and are reported in approximately 5% of all non-syndromic cleft palate patients. Clinical variability in CPX ranges from a mild or occult submucous cleft palate to a severe, complete cleft of the secondary palate. AIMS: To explore the possibility that mutations lying outside of the TBX22 coding region might contribute to the phenotype, a non-coding upstream exon and its upstream regulatory region were investigated. METHODS AND RESULTS: We sequenced 137

Impact of frenectomy on the oral exercise in patients with ankyloglossia and obstructive sleep apnea: double-blind randomized controlled clinical trials.

OBJECTIVE: This study compares the efficacy of oral exercise alone to oral exercise with frenectomy in improving obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) symptoms and quality of life (QOL) in patients with ankyloglossia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective, controlled, double-blind clinical study enrolled fifteen adults (20-60 years) newly diagnosed with mild to moderate OSA and ankyloglossia. Participants were randomly assigned to either oral exercise alone (control group; n = 8) or oral exercise with frenectomy (intervention group; n = 7). Outcomes were assessed after a 3-month therapy period using p

Frenotomy in Infants with Tongue-Tie and Breastfeeding Problems.

BACKGROUND: Infant tongue-tie can cause breastfeeding problems, which may be improved by frenotomy. However, controversy exists among the medical community. RESEARCH AIM: To examine the influence of frenotomy on infants with posterior ankyloglossia, by quantifying the changes in breastfeeding and maternal nipple pain using standardized tools. METHODS: Newborns (N = 30) below 12 weeks of age were recruited from the Herzl-Goldfarb Breastfeeding Clinic between April 2014 and April 2015. Diagnosis of posterior ankyloglossia was made clinically. Frenotomy was performed. Mothers received breastfee

The development of a tongue assessment tool to assist with tongue-tie identification.

AIM: To produce a simple tool with good transferability to provide a consistent assessment of tongue appearance and function in infants with tongue-tie. METHODS: The Bristol Tongue Assessment Tool (BTAT) was developed based on clinical practice and with reference to the Hazelbaker Assessment Tool for Lingual Frenulum Function (ATLFF). This paper documents 224 tongue assessments using the BTAT. There were 126 tongue assessments recorded using the BTAT and ATLFF tools to facilitate comparisons between them. Paired BTAT assessments were obtained from eight midwives who were using the new assessm

Office frenotomy for neonates: resolving dysphagia, parental satisfaction and cost-effectiveness.

OBJECTIVE: To determine parental satisfaction and cost-effectiveness of having a frenotomy performed in the office setting versus in the operating room under general anesthesia. METHOD: After obtaining IRB approval at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), we performed a retrospective chart review of patients having a frenotomy in the office between 2003-2008. 55 patients met the criteria and 25 were consented and their parents interviewed. CONCLUSION: All participants reported an improvement in feeding within one day and up to two weeks following the procedure. Parents also reporte

Ankyloglossia: assessment, incidence, and effect of frenuloplasty on the breastfeeding dyad.

OBJECTIVE: Ankyloglossia in breastfeeding infants can cause ineffective latch, inadequate milk transfer, and maternal nipple pain, resulting in untimely weaning. The question of whether the performance of a frenuloplasty benefits the breastfeeding dyad in such a situation remains controversial. We wished to 1) define significant ankyloglossia, 2) determine the incidence in breastfeeding infants, and 3) measure the effectiveness of the frenuloplasty procedure with respect to solving specific breastfeeding problems in mother-infant dyads who served as their own controls. METHODS: We examined 27

Ankyloglossia its impact breastfeeding.

This article contrasts two very different experiences of one mother breastfeeding her two sons to demonstrate the potential impact of ankyloglossia on breastfeeding. When too restrictive, ankyloglossia, also known as tongue-tie, can cause the newborn to ineffectively suckle at the breast. Breastfeeding difficulties can occur, such as long feedings or damaged nipples. When nurses, lactation consultants and other providers recognize this situation, they can refer women for further care and treatment, which can ultimately lead to breastfeeding success.

c. 595-596 insC of FOXC2 underlies lymphedema, distichiasis, ptosis, ankyloglossia, and Robin sequence in a Thai patient.

Lymphedema-distichiasis syndrome is a rare primary lymphedema inherited as an autosomal dominant disorder. The characteristic features consist of late onset-lymphedema and distichiasis together with other occasionally seen features including varicose vein, cleft palate, ptosis, and congenital heart diseases. FOXC2 is the gene found to be associated with this syndrome. We report here the first Thai patient who has characteristic features of this syndrome and the infrequently described features including ankyloglossia, and Robin sequence which consists of glossoptosis, cleft palate, and microgna

Lingual frenotomy for breastfeeding difficulties: a prospective follow-up study.

INTRODUCTION: Breastfeeding difficulties are sometimes attributable to tongue-tie with short-term relief after frenotomy. Limited follow-up is available, and predictors for nonsuccessful frenotomy have not yet been found. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We recruited 264 mother-infant dyads who underwent lingual frenotomy for breastfeeding difficulties. Data regarding the indications, anatomy of the tongue, and the response of the infant were noted by the physician. Mothers were contacted by telephone at 2 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months after frenotomy to answer a questionnaire. RESULTS: Two weeks after

Hyalinosis cutis et mucosae: gingival involvement.

Hyalinosis cutis et mucosae (lipoid proteinosis, Urbach-Wiethe disease) is a rare syndrome with autosomal recessive inheritance. The disease is characterized by diffuse deposition of a hyaline-like substance in the dermis, the submucosal connective tissue and various internal organs. The oral mucosa of affected people becomes nodular and thickened, with primary involvement of the labial, buccal and palatal mucosa, posterior tongue, and lingual frenulum. We report the case of a 66-year-old man with hyalinosis cutis et mucosae who presented with gingival hyperplasia due to diffuse deposition of

Nonsurgical and nonextraction treatment of skeletal Class III open bite: its long-term stability.

Two female patients, aged 14 years 5 months and 17 years 3 months with skeletal Class III open bite and temporomandibular dysfunction are presented. They had previously been classified as orthognathic surgical cases, involving first premolar removal. The primary treatment objective was to eliminate those skeletal and neuromuscular factors that were dominant in establishing their malocclusions. These included abnormal behavior of the tongue with short labial and lingual frenula, bilateral imbalance of chewing muscles, a partially blocked nasopharyngeal airway causing extrusion of the molars, wi

Endoscope-assisted intraoral removal of ectopic thyroid tissue using a frenotomy incision.

BACKGROUND: Ectopic thyroid tissue is a relatively rare condition and a developmental anomaly characterized by the aggregation of thyroid tissue. Usually, it occurs along the path of descent of the developing thyroid primordium from the foramen caecum, the most common being in the anterior midline of the neck at or below the level of the hyoid bone. Surgical removal of ectopic thyroid tissue is usually accomplished through an external incision in the neck. However, this procedure inevitably results in a neck scar. METHODS: We report the case of a 30-year-old woman with ectopic thyroid tissue.

Long-term outcome in a patient with a dentoskeletal open-bite malocclusion treated without extraction.

This case report describes the treatment of a patient with a Class II malocclusion with an anterior open bite. The patient, a girl 16 years of age, had a significant anteroposterior discrepancy and a high-angle tendency. Her face was convex, with competent lips. Intraorally she had an anterior open bite of 3 mm, space in the mandibular arch, and an overjet of 2 mm. High-pull headgear, anterior intermaxillary elastics, and appropriate wire bending were used to close the bite and to correct the anteroposterior dental relationship. Modification of a tongue thrust habit helped to correct this sign
