Trajectories of human brain functional connectome maturation across the birth transition.

Understanding the sequence and timing of brain functional network development at the beginning of human life is critically important from both normative and clinical perspectives. Yet, we presently lack rigorous examination of the longitudinal emergence of human brain functional networks over the birth transition. Leveraging a large, longitudinal perinatal functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data set, this study models developmental trajectories of brain functional networks spanning 25 to 55 weeks of post-conceptual gestational age (GA). The final sample includes 126 fetal scans (GA =

Mobility hinders malaria elimination goals in the Brazilian Amazon.

INTRODUCTION: Human mobility across the Brazilian Amazon-shaped by frontier development, land-use change, mining activity, and climatic shocks-remains a major barrier to malaria elimination. Brazil aims to eliminate Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) by 2030 and Plasmodium vivax (Pv) by 2035, yet malaria incidence has plateaued since 2020. We quantify parasite-specific mobility and assess how importations drive malaria reintroduction and reestablishment in areas approaching elimination. METHODS: We analyzed 5,521,411 de-identified malaria cases from Sivep-Malaria (2003-2023) across 808 municipalities

How Wastewater Monitoring is Helping to Investigate a Hepatitis A Outbreak Linked to Oysters' Consumption.

In April 2024, two cases of hepatitis A (HA) were linked to the consumption of oysters produced in the same region, which triggered a multidisciplinary study. A network was quickly set up in a one-health approach including epidemiological and clinical data, as well as analysis of locally collected shellfish and wastewater samples. By the end of the outbreak, up to 17 HA cases met the case definition: all shared a same genotype IA strain and have eaten oysters. The prompt response enabled the identification of oyster samples positive for the HAV genome at the start of the monitoring period; the

Neuroimaging-Guided TMS-EEG for Real-Time Cortical Network Mapping.

The cerebral cortex is organized into structurally and functionally segregated networks, enabling the human brain to process information highly efficiently. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), in combination with electroencephalography (EEG), offers a non-invasive approach to probing brain networks, revealing cortical excitability and causal connectivity. However, this method faces two significant challenges: (a) ensuring the quality of TMS-evoked potentials (TEPs) to maximize information gain, often requiring comprehensive cortical mapping, and (b) eliciting the response from the network

Nitrate trends in groundwater of the Campania region (southern Italy).

The Environmental Protection Agency of the Campania region in Italy (ARPAC) manages a groundwater quality monitoring network. For almost all the polluted waters, the key parameter driving the classification is the concentration of nitrate; hence, the Campania region, in coherence with the EU regulations, outlined the vulnerable areas and undertook remediation policies. The best groundwater quality is recorded for carbonate aquifers of the Apennine chain; on the contrary, the Tyrrhenian coastal plains are affected by severe contamination, with a locally very contaminated groundwater of the shal

The dynamics of stress: a longitudinal MRI study of rat brain structure and connectome.

Stress is a well-established trigger for a number of neuropsychiatric disorders, as it alters both structure and function of several brain regions and its networks. Herein, we conduct a longitudinal neuroimaging study to assess how a chronic unpredictable stress protocol impacts the structure of the rat brain and its functional connectome in both high and low responders to stress. Our results reveal the changes that stress triggers in the brain, with structural atrophy affecting key regions such as the prelimbic, cingulate, insular and retrosplenial, somatosensory, motor, auditory and perirhin

A pragmatic adaptive trial of hope-focused mentoring to improve mental health and social outcomes for young women who are not in education, employment or training in deprived coastal areas (The Looking Forward Project): feasibility trial stage protocol.

BACKGROUND: A large number of young women are not in education, employment, or training (NEET) in England. This group experiences poorer mental health and social outcomes than young women who work and study, and NEET young men. Gender disparities are compounded in deprived and coastal areas, where young women especially lack self-agency and aspirations. Research suggests that greater hope lowers risks of staying NEET and developing mental health problems. We co-developed a hope-focused intervention (HOPEFUL) for this group. HOPEFUL is a flexible modular programme, designed to help develop a mo

Methodology for Addressing Infectious Aerosol Persistence in Real-Time Using Sensor Network.

Human exposure to infectious aerosols results in the transmission of diseases such as influenza, tuberculosis, and COVID-19. Most dental procedures generate a significant number of aerosolized particles, increasing transmission risk in dental settings. Since the generation of aerosols in dentistry is unavoidable, many clinics have started using intervention strategies such as area-filtration units and extraoral evacuation equipment, especially under the relatively recent constraints of the pandemic. However, the effectiveness of these devices in dental operatories has not been studied. Therefo

Sense of external agency is sustained by multisensory functional integration in the somatosensory cortex.

"Sense of agency" (SoA), the feeling of control for events caused by one's own actions, is deceived by visuomotor incongruence. Sensorimotor networks are implicated in SoA, however little evidence exists on brain functionality during agency processing. Concurrently, it has been suggested that the brain's intrinsic resting-state (rs) activity has a preliminary influence on processing of agency cues. Here, we investigated the relation between performance in an agency attribution task and functional interactions among brain regions as derived by network analysis of rs functional magnetic resonanc

Intrinsic functional network architecture of human semantic processing: Modules and hubs.

Semantic processing entails the activation of widely distributed brain areas across the temporal, parietal, and frontal lobes. To understand the functional structure of this semantic system, we examined its intrinsic functional connectivity pattern using a database of 146 participants. Focusing on areas consistently activated during semantic processing generated from a meta-analysis of 120 neuroimaging studies (Binder et al., 2009), we found that these regions were organized into three stable modules corresponding to the default mode network (Module DMN), the left perisylvian network (Module P

Long-range gamma phase synchronization as a compensatory strategy during working memory in high-performing patients with schizophrenia.

Working memory deficits in schizophrenia may be associated with impairments in the integration of neural activity across a distributed network of cortical areas. However, evaluation of the contribution of this integration to working memory impairments in patients is severely confounded by behavioral performance. In the present multidimensional-neuroimaging study, measures of neural oscillations at baseline and during a working memory task, baseline gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) level in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), and behavioral performance were obtained. Controlling beha

Venetian rule and control of plague epidemics on the Ionian Islands during 17th and 18th centuries.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, measures were taken by the Venetian administration to combat plague on the Ionian Islands. At that time, although the scientific basis of plague was unknown, the Venetians recognized its infectious nature and successfully decreased its spread by implementing an information network. Additionally, by activating a system of inspection that involved establishing garrisons along the coasts, the Venetians were able to control all local movements in plague-infested areas, which were immediately isolated. In contrast, the neighboring coast of mainland Greece, which

Localization and macrostructure of subuterine lymphatic vessel networks in the bovine uterine broad ligament.

Localization and morphological features of lymphatic vessels leaving tissues of uterine horns and running through the broad ligament area were studied in mature cows after filling the lumen of the each lymphangion with varicoloured masses, mainly Microfil. The study has revealed that each branch of the lymphatic vessels emerged from both sides of the uterus and then formed double-layered networks, dorsal and ventral in the area of the mesometrium. The lymphatic branches under the uterus are very numerous and consist of enlarged precollector lymphangions. At the level of the ovary, the branches

Brain network hubs and cognitive performance of survivors of childhood infratentorial tumors.

BACKGROUND: Childhood infratentorial tumor patients frequently suffer from long-term cognitive deficits. As each constituent of their treatment can lead to neurotoxicity, cascade effects can lead to profound reorganization of the underlying brain network, the so-called 'connectome'. However, to date, few studies have assessed the relationship between brain network topology, the functional role of network hubs (i.e. highly connected regions), and neurocognitive outcomes in adult survivors of childhood infratentorial tumors. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, childhood infratentorial tumor

Relaying support in disaster-affected areas: the social implications of a 'pay-it-forward' network.

When a disaster strikes a country, a temporary so-called post-disaster utopia emerges in which local residents help each other and outsiders support survivors and victims. However, this utopia does not last. Survivors are likely to have no chance to pay people back for the help they have received and thus return to their daily lives with a sense of debt. After the Great East Japan Earthquake the author motivated survivors of other disasters to help survivors in the Tohoku region in eastern Japan in return for the support they had received in the past. Two findings are revealed: firstly, this p

Emerging mechanisms of T-tubule remodelling in heart failure.

Cardiac excitation-contraction coupling occurs primarily at the sites of transverse (T)-tubule/sarcoplasmic reticulum junctions. The orderly T-tubule network guarantees the instantaneous excitation and synchronous activation of nearly all Ca(2+) release sites throughout the large ventricular myocyte. Because of the critical roles played by T-tubules and the array of channels and transporters localized to the T-tubule membrane network, T-tubule architecture has recently become an area of considerable research interest in the cardiovascular field. This review will focus on the current knowledge

Altered functional network topology and connectivity in female nurses with shift work sleep disorder.

BACKGROUND: Shift work sleep disorder (SWSD) in nurses is highly prevalent and is increasingly recognized for its profound impact on human health. However, the brain functional network topology, which provides a comprehensive map of the brain's information processing architecture, remains partially understood in nurses with SWSD. METHODS: 45 nurses with SWSD and 45 healthy controls (HCs) underwent a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) scan. Graph theoretical analysis was used to investigate alterations in brain functional network topology. Functional network connecti

Anomaly Detection and Biomarkers Localization in Retinal Images.

Background: To design a novel anomaly detection and localization approach using artificial intelligence methods using optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans for retinal diseases. Methods: High-resolution OCT scans from the publicly available Kaggle dataset and a local dataset were used by four state-of-the-art self-supervised frameworks. The backbone model of all the frameworks was a pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN), which enabled the extraction of meaningful features from OCT images. Anomalous images included choroidal neovascularization (CNV), diabetic macular edema (DME), an

Study on the changes of Structural Covariance Network in post-traumatic stress disorder.

The topological properties of functional brain networks in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been thoroughly examined, whereas the topology of structural covariance networks has been researched much less. Based on graph theoretical approaches, we investigated the topological architecture of structural covariance networks among PTSD, trauma-exposed controls (TEC), and healthy controls (HC) by constructing covariance networks driven by inter-regional correlations of cortical thickness. Structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) scans and clinical scales were performed on 27 PTSD, 33 T
