Fasciola hepatica (liver fluke) is a physically and economically devastating parasitic trematode whose rise in recent years has been attributed to climate change. Climate has an impact on the free-living stages of the parasite and its intermediate host Lymnaea truncatula, with the interactions between rainfall and temperature having the greatest influence on transmission efficacy. There have been a number of short term climate driven forecasts developed to predict the following season's infection risk, with the Ollerenshaw index being the most widely used. Through the synthesis of a modified O

We employ a novel approach that combines pulse-chase feeding and multi-labelled stable isotopes to determine gut passage time (GPT), gut retention time (GRT), food ingestion rate (IR) and assimilation efficiency (AE) of three trace elements for a freshwater gastropod. Lettuce isotopically enriched in (53)Cr, (65)Cu and (106)Cd was fed for 2h to Lymnaea stagnalis. The release of tracers in feces and water was monitored for 48 h, during which unlabelled lettuce was provided ad libidum. The first defecation of (53)Cr occurred after 5h of depuration (GPT), whereas 90% of the ingested (53)Cr was re

Inorganic and organic tin compounds present in aqueous ecosystems have diverse effects on the behavior of living organisms. With the aim of identifying possible correlates of these actions, we studied the effects of both types of Sn2+. The effects of SnCl2 and Sn(CH3)2 on acetylcholine-activate currents were studied on identified neurons of the mollusk Lymnaea stagnalis L. using a two-microelectrode membrane potential clamping technique and by intracellular dialysis with potential and ion concentration clamping. Experiments were performed on single neurons after isolation and on whole ganglion

The peptidergic neuroendocrine caudodorsal cells (CDCs) of Lymnaea stagnalis control egg laying. The CDC network consists of 100 electrotonically coupled neurons that form two clusters in the cerebral ganglia. Upon prolonged, repeated, intracellular stimulation of one CDC, excitation spreads over the network and leads to a 30-min period of spiking activity: the afterdischarge. During the afterdischarge a number of peptides, including the ovulation hormone, are released. When two ganglia rings from different animals were pinned down next to each other, an afterdischarge initiated in the CDCs of

Venomous snakes have evolved their efficient venomous arsenals mainly to immobilize prey. The highly variable toxic peptides in these venoms target a myriad of neurotoxic and haemotoxic receptors and enzymes and comprise highly interesting candidates for drug discovery. Discovery of bioactive compounds from snake venoms, however, is a challenge to achieve. We have developed and applied a methodology to rapidly assess bioactives in a snake venom proteome. Our microfluidic platform opens up efficient and rapid profiling of venomous anti-cholinergic receptor compounds. The key advantages of our m

Membranotropic effects of the antihypoxants bemithyl and almide, structural analogs of thiobenzimidazole, have been studied on the isolated neuronal preparations of Lymaea stagnalis branchycephalic mollusk. Both drugs in a concentration range of 100-1000 microM produced a reversible, dose-dependent nonselective single-phase blocking action upon the ion channels and completely blocked the channels at a concentration of 10 mM. Therefore, bemithyl and almide are active membranotropic compounds capable (in sufficiently high concentrations) of changing the conductivity of slow sodium, calcium, and

BACKGROUND: Recent molecular studies have discovered substantial unrecognised diversity within the genus Diplostomum in fish populations in Europe and North America including three species complexes. However, data from the first intermediate host populations are virtually lacking. This study addresses the application of an integrative taxonomic approach to the cryptic species diversity of Diplostomum spp. in natural lymnaeid snail populations in Europe with a focus on the 'D. mergi' species complex.
METHODS: Totals of 1,909 Radix auricularia, 349 Radix peregra, 668 Stagnicola palustris and 24

Increased pharmaceutical usage has led to their widespread presence in aquatic environments, resulting in concerns regarding their potential environmental impacts. Antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like citalopram, are frequently detected in European surface waters. Acute laboratory studies have demonstrated that citalopram can inhibit algal growth, immobilise Daphnia magna, and may result in foot detachment (i.e. the inability to adhere to a substrate) in snails. However, research on long-term citalopram exposure is scarce, and our understanding of

BACKGROUND: Cercarial dermatitis (swimmer's itch) caused by bird schistosome cercariae, released from intermediate host snails, is a common disorder also at higher latitudes. Several cases were observed in the artificial Danish freshwater Ringen Lake frequently used by the public for recreational purposes. The lake may serve as a model system when establishing a risk analysis for this zoonotic disease. In order to explain high risk periods we determined infection levels of intermediate host snails from early spring to late summer (March, June and August) and elucidated the effect of temperatur

Reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) is a robust technique for the quantification and comparison of gene expression. To obtain reliable results with this method, one or more reference genes must be employed to normalize expression measurements among treatments or tissue samples. Candidate reference genes must be validated to ensure that they are stable prior to use in qPCR experiments. The pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis) is a common research organism, particularly in the areas of learning and memory, and is an emerging model for the study of biological asymmetry, biomineralization,

The large American liver fluke, Fascioloides magna - introduced to Europe before 1875 - was the first non-indigenous trematode to be detected in Hungarian cervids in 1995. As the most precious deer population became infected in the Gemenc game reserve a study has been launched to assess the extent and the effect of F. magna infections and to examine the options for the treatment of infected deer populations. Livers of red deer shot during regular hunting were submitted for the survey and were investigated by necropsy for the presence of F. magna and other liver dwelling trematodes. Recovered p

Four freshwater pulmonate species (Lymnaea ovata, L. stagnalis, Physa acuta, Planorbis leucostoma) were living in several watercress beds known for their relationships with human cases of fasciolosis, whereas L. truncatula was never found. The aims of these studies were to determine the prevalence of natural infections with Fasciola hepatica in snails and to verify if these species might ensure the full larval development of this trematode (with cercarial shedding) when they were experimentally subjected to F. hepatica only, or to co-infections with an other trematode species. Fascioliasis due to the digenean species Fasciola hepatica has recently proved to be an important public health problem, with human cases reported in countries of the five continents, including severe symptoms and pathology, with singular epidemiological characteristics, and presenting human endemic areas ranging from hypo- to hyperendemic. One of the singular epidemiological characteristics of human fascioliasis is the link of the hyperendemic areas to very high altitude regions, at least in South America. The Northern Bolivian Altiplano, located at very high altitude (3800-4100 m), presents

Fasciola hepatica infection was found in 5 of 12 marsupial and 1 of 3 eutherian species examined in southeastern Australia. Prevalence of infection in native mammals was as follows: Macropus giganteus, 59%; M. rufogriseus banksianus, 15%; Wallabia bicolor, 5%; Vombatus ursinus, 30%; Trichosurus vulpecula, 5%; and Rattus fuscipes, 4%. Collection sites were assigned to one of two categories. Prevalence was higher in macropodids collected on agricultural pastures grazed by sheep and cattle (category A) than in macropodid collected in forested areas variably grazed by livestock (category B). A hig

We described the transmission dynamics of Fasciola hepatica at its southern distribution range. Studies of prevalence and egg output in cattle and population dynamics and infection in snails were performed in a farm in the Andean Patagonian valleys, Argentina, between December 1998 and February 2002. Snail surveys were conducted from spring to autumn. Infection was diagnosed coprologically in the whole herd at the beginning and end of the study, and in a cohort of heifers at the beginning and end of 2001. A twice-a-year anthelmintic treatment was implemented in 1999. The relationship of the va

The aim of the study was to evaluate an influence of vaccination of the final host on F. hepatica development in intermediate hosts. Fluke eggs were isolated from the biliary tracts of calves vaccinated orally with recombinant cysteine proteinase of F. hepatica after the challenge infection and from control calves which received the infection only. To asses the effect of the vaccine on egg "hatch rate" the eggs were transferred to the Petri dishes with distilled water and incubated at 25 degrees C for 16-19 days. They were subsequently exposed to light for about 2 h, at a temperature of 27 +/-

This study evaluated the impact of pesticide application through agricultural activities in Chanchaga River, Nigeria, using macroinvertebrate data sets obtained for six months (September 2021-February 2022). Four (4) stations, characterized by various agricultural activities, were sampled along the river. Analysis of the water samples for organochlorine pesticide residues (OCP) using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) at the peak of the two seasons revealed a high concentration of eleven isomers of organochlorine, which ranged from 0.01 to 0.81 μg/L, and a mean concentration that was

Urogenital schistosomiasis (UGS) caused by Schistosoma haematobium is endemic in the South West Region of Cameroon. An understanding of the abundance and distribution of the Bulinus snail, intermediate host can inform strategic snail control programmes at a local scale. This study investigated seasonal dynamics and environmental factors influencing occurrence and abundance of freshwater snail intermediate hosts in Tiko, a semi-urban endemic focus in the Mount Cameroon area. A longitudinal malacological field survey was conducted between December 2019 and December 2020 in the Tiko municipality.
