Four week old male Wistar rats were used to study the effects of scopoletin and cyanide on the histopathology of rat brain. The rats were divided into a control and three experimental groups (2-4) and fed rations containing 0.07 microg scopoletin/100 g, 0.07 microg scopoletin + 1.8 mg cyanide/100 g and 1.8 mg cyanide/100 g, respectively. These levels of scopoletin and cyanide corresponded to levels found in a processed cassava diet. The first group was fed the same ration as the others but without scopoletin and cyanide. The rats were fed these rations for twelve months. Rats from each group w

Cyanide exposure from consumption of insufficiently processed cassava has been implicated in aggravating iodine deficiency disorders (IDD). The cyanide metabolite, thiocyanate (SCN) may interfere with iodine (I) uptake of the thyroid gland. A study on 217 women in an IDD endemic area in western Tanzania showed that 98% consumed cassava daily. Total and visible goitre rates were 72.8% and 13.3%, respectively. Median urinary iodine was 3.6 micrograms/dl indicating moderate iodine deficiency. Processing methods which remove cyanogens from cassava roots have changed with time. Urinary thiocyanate

The application of compost as a soil amendment can reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers, improve agricultural yields, and minimize the disposal of organic waste in landfills. However, the agronomic value of the resulting compost is strongly conditioned by the biochemical composition of the feedstock and the processing protocol. This study investigated how contrasting feedstocks affect thermal dynamics, physicochemical maturation, and microbiological safety indicators in two composting systems. Compost 1 (C1) was prepared from tuber peels of cassava (Manihot esculenta), potato (Solanum tub

Oligospermia is a severe disorder that affects the male population around the world. Genetic defects, smoking, age, and modern lifestyle are significant contributing factors to male infertility in oligospermia. Myrica esculenta fruits contain high levels of chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, myricetin, quercetin, and ascorbic acid, which have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and pharmacological properties. Therefore, the present study evaluates the protective effects of Myrica esculenta aqueous extract against cyclophosphamide (CYP)-induced spermatogenic dysfunction in rats. A total of 25 Wistar r

Three villages in Boko Health Zone, Bandundu Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), had 61 konzo cases and konzo prevalences of 2.5%, 4.1% and 7.5% respectively. Konzo cases occurred every year for 10 years and every month, peaking in July. The high mean cyanide content of cassava flour of 50 ppm was due to short soaking of cassava roots for 1-2 days instead of 3-4 days. Konzo cases were examined and village women taught the wetting method that removes cyanogens from flour. The villages were visited every month for 1 year following previous methodology. No new konzo cases occurred durin

Cassava contains cyanogenic glucosides which are hydrolysed by an enzyme linamarase to produce cyanohydrins which breakdown to toxic cyanide. Cyanide ingestion from bitter cassava can cause cyanide poisoning sometimes leading to death and also konzo, an irreversible paralysis of the legs which occurs mainly in children and young women. In 2005 we developed a simple wetting method that reduces the total cyanide content of cassava flour 3-6-fold. It involves wetting the flour, spreading it in a thin layer in the shade for 5h and using it the same day to make traditional thick porridge (ugali). T

During cassava starch production, large amounts of cyanoglycosides were released and hydrolysed by plant-borne enzymes, leading to cyanide concentrations in the wastewater as high as 200 mg/l. For anaerobic degradation of the cyanide during pre-acidification or single-step methane fermentation, anaerobic cultures were enriched from soil residues of cassava roots and sewage sludge. In a pre-acidification reactor this culture was able to remove up to 4 g potassium cyanide/l of wastewater at a hydraulic retention time (tHR) of 4 days, equivalent to a maximal cyanide space loading of 400 mg CN- 1(

Virus titration is an important step required on viral vaccines quality control. "Plaque assay", which employs several types of overlay media, is usually used on viral titrations. In this paper we describe the use of Tapioca as an overlay media. Firstly, the toxicity of Tapioca was tested on Vero cells inoculated or not with the Yellow Fever virus (YF) 17DD vaccine strain. Secondly, different batches of the 17DD virus using the Tapioca and Karaya gum as the overlay on Vero cells were tested when higher titres were obtained using Tapioca. Tapioca was also shown to be a suitable overlay to be us

Conversion of cassava (Manihot esculenta) roots to processed products such as gari and fufu before consumption is a common practice worldwide by cassava end-user for detoxification, prolonged shelf life or profitability. Fresh root and processed product yield are supposed to be equivalent for each genotype, however, that is not the case. Developing genotypes with high product conversion rate is an important breeding goal in cassava as it drives the adoption rates of new varieties. The objective of this study was to quantify the contribution of genetic and genotype-by-environment interaction (G

Light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b-binding (Lhc) proteins comprise a plant-specific superfamily involved in photosynthesis and stress responses. Despite their importance, little is known in papaya (Carica papaya), an economically important tree fruit crop as well as a species close to the model plant arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). This study reports a first genome-wide analysis of Lhc superfamily genes in papaya, and a total of 28 members that represent four defined families or 26 orthologous groups were identified from the papaya genome. The superfamily number is comparable to 28 or 27 rep

BACKGROUND: Hand dermatitis (HD) is an inflammatory disorder of the hand. Agricultural industries (farming) have been reported as one of the leading occupation predisposing workers to health risks. Practices such as dumping cassava peels in farm environment, removal of heaps of peels, soaking of cassava and clearing of ditches have been identified as potentially harmful. These processes, which are wet works, are often done with bare hands predisposing cassava processors to HD.
AIMS: This study aimed to determine the prevalence, predisposing factors and characteristics of HD amongst cassava pr

The design and development of gluten-free foods requires a comprehensive understanding of the behavior of the raw materials to attain the same cooking and nutritional quality as gluten-based food. The objective of this study was to determine the optimal hot-air drying conditions for elaboration of cassava flour to be used in a gluten-free pasta formulation. The results showed that the operational conditions to minimize the hot-air drying time (57 min) to produce cassava flour with higher water holding capacity was 57 ℃ at 3 m/s. Then, the optimal formulation for the pasta was found to be cassa

Boiled biofortified cassava containing β-carotene can increase retinyl palmitate in triacylglycerol-rich plasma. Thus, it might alleviate vitamin A deficiency. Cassava requires extensive preparation to decrease its level of cyanogenic glucosides, which can be fatal. Garification is a popular method of preparing cassava that removes cyanogen glucosides. Our objective was to compare the effectiveness of biofortified gari to gari prepared with red palm oil. The study was a randomized crossover trial in 8 American women. Three gari preparations separated by 2-week washout periods were consumed. Tr

BACKGROUND: Konzo is an irreversible paralysis of the legs that occurs mainly among children and young women in remote villages in tropical Africa and is associated with a monotonous diet of bitter cassava. Konzo was discovered in 1938 by Dr. G. Trolli in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It also occurs in Mozambique, Tanzania, Cameroon, Central African Republic, and Angola. It was first controlled in Kay Kalenge village, DRC, in 2011 with the use of a wetting method to remove cyanogens from cassava flour. Fourteen months later, another visit was made to Kay Kalenge.
OBJECTIVE: To deter

Exposure to cyanide is a major public health problem where highly cyanogenic cassava foods are consumed. Thiocyanate (SCN), the biomarker of exposure to cyanide is present in several foods, and produced endogenously. Concentrations of urine SCN were measured in endemic and non-endemic areas of ataxic polyneuropathy in Nigeria. Cassava food consumption in the endemic area was twice that of non-endemic areas. Geometrical mean (95% CI) urine SCN was 20 µmol/l (18-24) for no consumption of cassava foods, 56 µmol/l (49-64) for daily consumption, 56 µmol/l (48-65) for twice daily consumption and 85

BACKGROUND: Gari and tapioca are storage-cupboard convenience foods obtained from the tubers of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz). They are important staples in Nigeria and many African countries where malnutrition is a major problem. Tapioca is a quick-cooking food made from partly gelatinized starch and gari is a fermented, roasted, granular food made from cassava pulp.
OBJECTIVE: Gari and tapioca are nutritionally inferior and need to be fortified. This paper reports the macro- and micronutrient profiles of soybean-fortified gari and tapioca.
METHODS: Gari and tapioca were fortified with
