Correlation between GLCM-based texture features of the lateral pterygoid muscle and cognitive function in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus: a preliminary report.

PURPOSE: The potential relationship between mastication ability and cognitive function in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) patients is unclear. This report investigated the association between mastication and cognitive function in iNPH patients using the gray level of the co-occurrence matrix on the lateral pterygoid muscle. METHODS: We analyzed data from 96 unoperated iNPH patients who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) between December 2016 and February 2023. Radiomic features were extracted from T2 MRI scans of the lateral pterygoid muscle, and muscle texture paramet

Association Between Occlusal Wear, Viscoelastic Properties, and Pain in Masticatory Muscles in Individuals With or Without Headache and Neck Pain: A Pilot Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVES: Malocclusion and occlusal wear are identified as potential risk factors for altered masticatory muscle function, pain, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. This study aimed to assess the correlation between occlusal discrepancies, viscoelastic properties, and pain scores in the muscles of mastication-temporalis, masseter, pterygoids, and sternocleidomastoid muscles-in individuals with and without head and neck pain (HNP). METHODS: This pilot exploratory study included 38 participants (10 men and 28 women) divided into 18 patients without HNP (control) and 20 with HNP (ca

Moebius syndrome: clinical manifestations in a pediatric patient.

Moebius syndrome is a congenital, nonprogressive disorder clinically characterized by loss of facial expression, impaired stomatognathic system functions, incapacity to close the eyelids, and several oral impairments. The purpose of this paper was to present the clinical manifestations and the dental treatment in a 5-year, 2-month-old male Moebius syndrome patient. The child presented with facial asymmetry, difficulty performing facial mimic movements and pronouncing some letters, and compromised suction, mastication, breathing, and deglutition. An intraoral examination revealed hypofunction o

[Case report of an osteoarthritic temporomandibular joint patient whose posterior open bite was successfully restored by occlusal bonding method].

PATIENT: The patient was a 50-year-old woman who complained of left temporomandibular joint pain during mastication and wide mouth opening. The diagnosis of this patient was bilateral osteoarthritis in temporomandibular joint; therefore maxillary full-arch stabilization appliance (SA) was delivered. In response, the TMD signs and symptoms were alleviated. However she subsequently complained of dysfunction of mastication due to anterior and posterior open bite. Sometime thereafter, after applying SA and provisional adhesion onlay, occlusal reconstruction was performed by means of porcelain dire

The Effect of Low-Level Laser Therapy to Reduce Pain Caused by Orthodontic Separators: A Randomized, Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled, Split-Mouth Study.

Background: During the initiation of routine orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances, placing elastic separators (ESs) may lead to the patient experiencing considerable pain. Earlier studies evaluating the effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on reducing pain caused by orthodontic ESs have reported contradictory results. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of a single application of LLLT on the experience of pain following ES placement. Methods: A double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized controlled trial was performed-with implementation of the split-mouth technique-whe

The influence of expansion rates on mandibular distraction osteogenesis: a computational analysis.

Mandibular distraction osteogenesis is a clinical procedure used for modifying the mandibular geometry when problems of dental overcrowding and arch shrinkage occur. The objective of this study is to use a computational model of tissue differentiation to examine the influence of the rate of distraction on bone re-growth within the fracture callus of a human mandible submitted to symphyseal distraction osteogenesis. A 3D model of the mandible is reconstructed from CT scan data and meshed into finite elements. Two different mastication loadings have been investigated: a 'full' mastication load a

[The systemic diagnosis].

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic diagnosis is generally centered on the morphological aspect, as is the treatment: it is most often a matter of modifying the shape of the arches and their relationships to adjust them to a morphological norm with the goal of a beautiful smile. However legitimate it may be, this diagnostic approach may seem reductive if we consider that teeth are also used to chew: it is even their main function. But how to take into account the masticatory function? MATERIALS AND METHODS: With the help of clinical examples, the author develops the modalities of the clinical explorati

Temporomandibular Joint Herniation Into the External Auditory Canal: Two Cases Involving a Persistent Foramen Tympanicum.

A congenital bony defect of the external auditory canal (EAC) may cause temporomandibular joint (TMJ) herniation into the EAC. This rare condition is known as persistent foramen tympanicum. We report 2 cases of symptomatic TMJ herniation through a patent foramen tympanicum. The patients complained of mastication-induced tinnitus. Otoscopic examination revealed that a whitish protruding mass at the anterior wall of the EAC bulged when the patients closed their mouths. After conservative managements such as avoidance of chewing foods on the affected side for 2 months, mastication-induced tinnitu

Myofunctional therapy as an aid to prosthodontic treatment after hemiglossectomy: a clinical report.

Although several reports describe the prosthetic management of patients after hemiglossectomy, the techniques are related to the fabrication of the prostheses, no reports on maximizing the functional potential of the remaining tongue musculature and surrounding tissues were identified by the authors. This clinical report describes the use of myofunctional therapy as an aid to the maxillofacial prosthodontic rehabilitation of an edentulous patient who was diagnosed with invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue and underwent hemiglossectomy. Myofunctional therapy was introduced before, dur

On Gerasimov's plastic facial reconstruction technique: new insights to facilitate repeatability.

Gerasimov's plastic facial reconstruction method is notoriously difficult to repeat from the published literature. Primarily, this is because of the method's underlying qualitative basis but other factors contribute including: misreports in the secondary literature of Gerasimov's method essence; a lack of published details concerning Gerasimov's modeling mastic; Gerasimov's deviation from his own published nose projection prediction guidelines; and continued refinement of the methods in the 15 years following their foremost publication. As Gerasimov cannot be consulted to resolve these issues,

Chewing ability and quality of life among the elderly residing in a rural community in Japan.

The present study statistically evaluates the relationship between chewing ability and quality of life (QOL) in elderly Japanese residents. We used a subjective evaluation and a mastication score determined by the food intake status to evaluate chewing ability. The PGC morale scale was used to evaluate the QOL level. The mastication score was significantly related to the QOL level in the subject group (P<0.05). The relationship between the subjective evaluation of chewing ability and the score on the PGC morale scale showed a similar tendency. In the section of the PGC morale scale that assess

IncobotulinumtoxinA Injection for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) involves dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint and associated muscles of mastication causing pain with chewing, limitation of jaw movement, and pain. While the exact pathophysiology of TMD is not completely understood, it is thought that hyperfunction of the muscles of mastication places stress on the temporomandibular joint, leading to degeneration of the joint and associated symptoms. We hypothesize that chemodenervation of the muscles of mastication with IncobotulinumtoxinA (Xeomin) will decrease the stress on the temporomandibular joint and

Realization of masticatory movement by 3-dimensional simulation of the temporomandibular joint and the masticatory muscles.

Masticatory muscles are closely involved in mastication, pronunciation, and swallowing, and it is therefore important to study the specific functions and dynamics of the mandibular and masticatory muscles. However, the shortness of muscle fibers and the diversity of movement directions make it difficult to study and simplify the dynamics of mastication. The purpose of this study was to use 3-dimensional (3D) simulation to observe the functions and movements of each of the masticatory muscles and the mandible while chewing. To simulate the masticatory movement, computed tomographic images were

Automatic regulation of occlusal force because of hardness-change of the bite object.

It is considered that the information of chewed food, such as size and texture, is important for smooth mastication. In this study, we analysed aspects of the control of occlusal force, by experimentally reproducing situations in which the hardness of food changed unpredictably during mastication, using a device that utilized a 3-sectioned urethane rubber piece with different hardness values. Seven healthy subjects were instructed to perform repetitive jaw open-close movements paced by a metronome (1.0 Hz) and to maintain constant occlusal force throughout the trial. Using the device, the foll

Chewing in patients with severe neurological impairment.

OBJECTIVE AND DESIGN: As degenerative disease, infarction and hemorrhage in the CNS may compromise chewing, the aim was to classify and analyse such chewing disturbances. The case series included clinical and electromyographic recordings from 10 patients (ages 12-78 years) with neurological disorders. RESULTS: Classifications were involuntary munching (two women with dystonia which was abolished during mastication), ceased chewing function (three men with impaired volitional motor control and spasticity from locked-in syndrome, restricted chewing range (two men and one woman with reduced jaw

Orofacial muscles may be affected in early stages of Becker muscular dystrophy: A preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is reported in patients with Duchenne or Becker muscular dystrophy. Our clinical experience suggests that, compared with Duchenne patients, impaired mastication and swallowing occur early in Becker patients relative to their skeletal muscle involvement. The aim of this study was to assess dysphagia in Duchenne and Becker patients in relation to ambulatory capacity. METHODS: In patients in the early ambulatory stage, clinical symptoms, quantitative muscle ultrasound of the orofacial muscles, and maximum bite force were assessed. The 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) was used to m

Electrophysiologic investigation of mandibular nerve injury.

Isolated lesions of the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve have only rarely been reported. We report the occurrence of an isolated lesion of the mandibular nerve associated with a unilateral mandibular fracture, and its substantiation electrophysiologically. A 65-year-old man was involved in a motor vehicle accident resulting in multiple fractures, including a unilateral mandibular fracture and temporomandibular joint dislocation. No evidence of intracranial pathology by CT scan was noted and the neurologic examination was nonfocal except for dysfunction of the mandibular nerve ipsilate

Four-Dimensional Computed Tomography Evaluation of Condylar Movement in a Patient With Temporomandibular Joint Osteoarthritis.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis (OA) is a disease of the bone, cartilage, and supporting tissues of the joint. Patients with advanced TMJ-OA often have symptoms such as pain, swelling, and joint dysfunction, and they sometimes require surgical intervention when conservative treatment is not effective. The etiology of TMJ-OA remains elusive. The usefulness of 4-dimensional (4D) computed tomography (CT) in motion analysis of various joints has recently been reported. This article introduces a novel imaging technique of 4D CT that aims to identify kinematic features that may be assoc
