Dentofacial morphology may affect orofacial functions, therefore the aim of the current study was to evaluate the influence of craniofacial morphology on masticatory function, occlusal contact area (OCA), and masticatory muscles activity. Seventy-eight (78) subjects were divided into three groups according to vertical facial pattern: 1. mesofacial; 2. brachyfacial; and 3. dolichofacial. Artificial material and the sieving method were used to access masticatory efficiency (ME). OCA was determined by registration of posterior teeth. Electromyographic (EMG) activity of the masseter and anterior t

BACKGROUND: During third molar removal, the mandible is supported by a dental assistant (DA) to counter downward forces during surgery, and with sedation, to maintain airway patency. The Restful Jaw device (PEP Design; Saint Paul) provides this support instead of the DA.
PURPOSE: This study compared the occurrence of postoperative preauricular and masticatory muscle pain symptoms (PMMPS) between the device and DAs providing mandibular support, using two outcome measures. Secondary aims identify predictors of outcome and providers' opinions of the device.

We recently reported that masticatory myosin heavy chain (MHC-M) is expressed as the exclusive or predominant MHC isoform in masseter and temporalis muscles of several rodent species, contrary to the prevailing dogma that rodents express almost exclusively MHC isoforms that are typically found in fast limb muscles and not masticatory myosin. We also reported that the same rodent species express the embryonic/atrial isoform of myosin light chain 1 (MLC1E/A) in jaw-closing muscles and not a unique masticatory MLC1 isoform that others have reported as being expressed in jaw-closing muscles of car

Camelids are the only living representatives of the Suborder Tylopoda, and present a unique set of osteo-myological masticatory features, differing from all other extant euungulates. They combine selenodont dentition and rumination with a fused symphysis, and roughly plesiomorphic muscle proportions. Despite its potential relevance as an euungulate model in comparative anatomy studies, the available data is strikingly scarce. The present study represents the first description of the masticatory muscles of a Lamini, analyzing the functional morphology of Lama glama and other camelids in a compa

The dental occlusion and alterations in orofacial muscles were studied in 267 patients whose severe anterior open bite had been treated with a Le Fort 1 intrusion osteotomy with or without an advancement sagittal split osteotomy about 6 years ago. Only 17% of those patients showed anterior contact, and 20% had no vertical overlap of mandibular and maxillary central incisors at all. Tongue position, activity of masticatory muscles, lip competence, lip-incisor relationship, and breathing mode were assessed. Statistically significant correlations were found between tongue positions and occlusion

BACKGROUND: Myositis Ossificans is a rare heterotopic bone formation within a muscle being the masticatory muscles exceptionally involved. In most cases there is a previous trauma, bearing in mind that there may be many other etiologies. CT scan and panoramic radiographs along with histological findings are essential diagnostic aids.
CASE DESCIPTION: We report a rare case of MO of masseter muscle in 49 years-old woman after repetitive wisdom tooth infection with the discussion of clinical, radiological and histological features.
CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: MO is a rare disease of masticatory musc

PURPOSE: The individual jaw position is determined by the masticatory muscle among other factors. Before surgical treatment of malocclusions, thorough evaluation of the muscles is required to estimate the relapse risk.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: By means of computer tomography, lateral radiographs of the skull and denture models, the relationships between morphological parameters of the masticatory muscles and the jaw bone were analyzed. Furthermore, possible causes for the extent of the malocclusion are described.
RESULTS: A patient group with deep overbite was found to have significantly highe

OBJECTIVE: To detect whether myotatic reflex activation of masticatory muscles during drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) can be an indirect marker for temporomandibular disorder (TMD) in patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
METHODS: OSA patients were prospectively recruited and underwent a complete TMD examination prior to undergoing DISE with the addition of electrodes applied over masticatory muscles. A positive activation of myotatic reflex was considered in case of an increase in muscle tone of at least 50%.
RESULTS: Of the 41 patients included, 48.8% presented activat

The Authors carried out an experimental study on a homogeneous group of young people to provide evidence of functional correlation among masticatory muscles and, indirectly, between changes to the interdental occlusal plane and modifications of the plantar arches due to talipes valgus and flat foot. In the two analysed conditions, the masticatory muscles undergo different functional alterations. This is due to the fact that the mechanoreceptors in the tendons of the muscles governing the plantar arch configuration are stimulated in different ways during the activation of long osteoarthromuscul

BACKGROUND: Solid foods mix with saliva during mastication to form a bolus. The water content of the food bolus and lubrication in the oral cavity are critical factors that determine the dynamics of the masticatory muscles. Among other factors, fat is believed to affect masticatory behaviour by lubricating foods.
OBJECTIVES: The effects of artificially induced hyposalivation on masticatory behaviour and bolus properties were investigated using bread with varying water content and spreads to evaluate how these properties affect masticatory behaviour with hyposalivation.
METHODS: Twenty health

Wearing a medical mask influences resting activity of the temporalis anterior and masseter muscles in healthy young women. However, no studies link medical mask-wearing with masticatory muscle activity in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Therefore, this study aims to compare electromyographic patterns while wearing a medical mask between women with and without temporomandibular disorders. Based on the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders, 115 adult women qualified for the study. Participants were divided into the following two groups: diagnosed TMDs (n

INTRODUCTION: Ultrasonography can detect structural muscle changes caused by neuromuscular disease, but it has not yet been applied to facial nerve diseases. Quantitative analysis would be the preferred method to determine whether ultrasound findings are within normal limits, but there are no normative data for mimic muscles. The purpose of this study was to provide gender-specific normative ultrasonography data for muscle area, diameter, and contractility for mimic and masticatory muscles in adults.
METHODS: Bilateral scans of multiple mimic and masticatory muscles were performed at rest and
