Emotional imagery across psychopathology: A translational perspective for youth mental health.

Adolescence or youth, spanning ages 12-24, represents peak vulnerability for mental health problems but also offers cognitive plasticity and thus optimal opportunity for interventions. Meanwhile, the science of mental imagery is fuelling innovations in mental health, but mostly in adults. In this review, we aim to spotlight mental imagery in youth mental health, highlighting its potential for driving theoretical and therapeutic innovations. We synthesise the current evidence for imagery's role in understanding and addressing psychopathology, focussing on emerging youth data. Central to this re

Ethical and Legal Considerations in the Collection and Analysis of Mental Health Lived Experience Narratives: Reflections on 4 Case Studies of Research Practice.

Personal narratives describing lived experiences of the entire spectrum of mental health challenges are now widely available to the public, including through autobiographies from public figures, thematic collections of narratives assembled by mental health organizations, and individual narratives published on video sharing services. Mental health lived experience narratives have been used as an "active ingredient" in interventions intended to create change, such as in campaigns against mental health stigma. In the narrative inquiry research approach, they are used to explore mental health phen

Emerging adults' lived experience of formative family stress: the family's lasting influence.

In this article, we use a phenomenology framework to explore emerging adults' formative experiences of family stress. Fourteen college students participated in a qualitative interview about their experience of family stress. We analyzed the interviews using the empirical phenomenological psychology method. Participants described a variety of family stressors, including parental conflict and divorce, physical or mental illness, and emotional or sexual abuse by a family member. Two general types of parallel processes were essential to the experience of family stress for participants. First, the

Mental health differences between young adults with and without same-sex contact: A simultaneous examination of underlying mechanisms.

Previous research has documented that sexual minorities are more likely than heterosexual people to experience mental health problems, but little is known about how these disparities emerge. Analysis of data from Miami-Dade County, Florida, shows that young adults reporting same-sex contact have higher levels of depressive symptoms and drug use than those without such contact, but that different processes explain the disparities in the two outcomes. A substantial portion of the gap in depressive symptoms is explained by sexual minorities' higher levels of stress exposure and their lower levels

Music Activities and Mental Health Recovery: Service Users' Perspectives Presented in the CHIME Framework.

Internationally, mental health service developments are increasingly informed by the principles of recovery, and the availability of arts and creative activities are becoming more common as part of provision. Mental health service users' experiences, reflecting on the complex nature of using music participation in recovery are, however, limited. This essay considers literature that explores how music can support mental health service users in a recovery process. We have selected studies that include a broad spectrum of music activities, as well as literature considering various concepts about

[From monitoring to improvement: a data-driven learning network in outpatient mental health care].

BACKGROUND: The quality of Dutch mental healthcare is under pressure due to staff shortages and an increasing demand for care. To improve the quality of care, four outpatient mental healthcare institutions formed a learning network in 2022 for anxiety, mood and trauma en stressor related disorders. Within this network, data on treatment processes and outcomes were shared and systematically compared. This facilitated the identification of best practices and provided insights to optimize workflows, ensuring treatments are delivered more efficiently and effectively. METHOD: An observational coho

'An Embodied Journey Towards Recovery': A Grounded Theory of Mental Health Service Users' Experiences of a Nature-based Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Nature-based interventions (NBIs) have been identified to support a recovery-oriented approach for people experiencing mental health issues. However, there is still limited knowledge related to how mental health service users experience their recovery process when engaged in NBIs. AIM: To explore and explain how mental health service users experience the process of personal recovery from participating in a newly developed NBI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted using constructivist grounded theory and included 20 participants. The NBI, including equine-assisted therap

[Depressive syndromes in the immigrant population].

Migrations are currently one of the most important sociocultural and political phenomena. As a rule, immigrants are in good health, although the immigration is by itself a mental health risk factor. This population shows common specific problems as adaptation processes, depressive syndromes, or other psychiatric problems. "Ulises' syndrome", depression, and dysthymia are the most common mental health conditions among unlawful non-european community immigrants cared in specific facilities. Similarly to the spanish indigenous population, anxiety disorders and readjustment disorders are the most

Mental health of mothers of children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis: appraisal as a mediator.

Examined direct and mediated relations between condition parameters and maternal mental health for 53 mothers of 2- to 11-year-old children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). Multivariate analyses revealed that when considered simultaneously, indices of both biological severity and functional severity were associated significantly with maternal mental health. Further, mother's appraisals of the impact of the child's illness on the family partially mediated the effects of medication type and child's functional status on mother's mental health. Results provide support for conceptual model

Associations Between Parent Mental State Language and Child Inhibitory Control in Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

PURPOSE: Children who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) are at increased risk for neurocognitive delays, which can have cascading effects on development. Associations between neurocognition and the content of parental language-specifically the use of mental state vocabulary-have been observed in typically hearing (TH) children. This study investigated the role of parental use of mental state language (e.g., vocabulary related to thought processes, desires, and emotions) in explaining variability in neurocognition in children who are D/HH. METHOD: Dyads of 62 TH and 69 D/HH children who wear

Transposable Elements and Their Epigenetic Regulation in Mental Disorders: Current Evidence in the Field.

Transposable elements (TEs) are highly repetitive DNA sequences in the human genome that are the relics of previous retrotransposition events. Although the majority of TEs are transcriptionally inactive due to acquired mutations or epigenetic processes, around 8% of TEs exert transcriptional activity. It has been found that TEs contribute to somatic mosaicism that accounts for functional specification of various brain cells. Indeed, autonomous retrotransposition of long interspersed element-1 (LINE-1) sequences has been reported in the neural rat progenitor cells from the hippocampus, the huma

Mentalization and couple relationships: A systematic review of associations and interventions.

BACKGROUND: Mentalization, the ability to understand one's own and another's thoughts and feelings, is considered important for couple functioning. Many couple-focused interventions aim to improve mentalization, either as the process through which change occurs or as a central goal of treatment. We aimed to examine (a) associations between mentalization and couple relationship processes and (b) the impact of interventions designed to enhance mentalization in couples. METHODS: We included studies of adult romantic couples that assessed associations between mentalization and relationship outcom

Assessing quality of care and observance of human rights in residential mental health facilities in Greece through the WHO QualityRights tool kit.

In this paper, we present and reflect upon the process of evaluating two residential mental health facilities in Thessaloniki, Greece, through the WHO QualityRights tool kit. The QualityRights tool kit is a structured process for assessing quality of care and human rights in mental health and social care facilities, in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), introduced by the World Health Organization in 2012. We have piloted the use of the Toolkit in two supported accommodation facilities, a hostel and a service supervising independent

Mindful judgment and decision making.

A full range of psychological processes has been put into play to explain judgment and choice phenomena. Complementing work on attention, information integration, and learning, decision research over the past 10 years has also examined the effects of goals, mental representation, and memory processes. In addition to deliberative processes, automatic processes have gotten closer attention, and the emotions revolution has put affective processes on a footing equal to cognitive ones. Psychological process models provide natural predictions about individual differences and lifespan changes and int

Is psychosis a dysmyelination-related information-processing disorder?

Numerous lines of evidence implicate myelin and oligodendrocyte function as critical processes affecting neuronal connectivity, which is a central abnormality in schizophrenia. Neurodevelopmental models related to dysmyelination have suggested its relation with different schizophrenia-like symptoms. Post-mortem studies in patients with schizophrenia have reported 14-22% reduction in the density and the quantity of oligodendrocytes. Several myelin-related candidate genes have been linked oligodendrocyte and myelin dysfunction with neurocircuitry abnormalities in schizophrenia. A number of myeli

Imaging the "At-Risk" Brain: Future Directions.

OBJECTIVES: Clinical neuroscience is increasingly turning to imaging the human brain for answers to a range of questions and challenges. To date, the majority of studies have focused on the neural basis of current psychiatric symptoms, which can facilitate the identification of neurobiological markers for diagnosis. However, the increasing availability and feasibility of using imaging modalities, such as diffusion imaging and resting-state fMRI, enable longitudinal mapping of brain development. This shift in the field is opening the possibility of identifying predictive markers of risk or prog

The cross-functional role of frontoparietal regions in cognition: internal attention as the overarching mechanism.

Neuroimaging studies have repeatedly reported findings of activation in frontoparietal regions that largely overlap across various cognitive functions. Part of this frontoparietal activation has been interpreted as reflecting attentional mechanisms that can adaptively be directed towards external stimulation as well as internal representations (internal attention), thereby generating the experience of distinct cognitive functions. Nevertheless, findings of material- and task-specific activation in frontal and parietal regions challenge this internal attention hypothesis and have been used to s

Evaluation of the double-deficit hypothesis in college students referred for learning difficulties.

The present study explored the double-deficit hypothesis (DDH) in a sample of 146 college students with and without reading disabilities (RD). The results indicated that although both phonological awareness (PA) and visual naming speed (VNS) contributed to performance on measures of decoding and comprehension, their relative contribution was influenced both by the nature of the stimulus (word vs. nonword vs. text) and by the conditions of the task (timed vs. untimed). Similar results were obtained using an individual differences approach, or when between-group comparisons were made of individu

Deficits in visual cognition and attention following bilateral anterior cingulotomy.

A series of eight tests of visual cognitive abilities was used to examine pre- to post-operative performance changes in a patient receiving bilateral anterior cingulotomy. Compared with a set of eight matched control participants, post-operatively, the patient exhibited deficits in (a) the ability to sequence novel cognitive operations required to generate multipart images or rotate perceptual stimuli; (b) the ability to search for, select, and compare images of objects when the instructions did not specify precisely which objects should be visualized; and, (c) the ability to select a controll
