In vivo plasma profiles from formulations containing 5% ibuprofen were compared after a single topical application in a randomised, double-blind, cross-over trial. Ibuleve gel (Dermal Laboratories, UK) contained only ibuprofen whilst Deep Relief gel (Mentholatum, UK) also contained 3% menthol. Cooling or the application of mentholated liniments to the skin has been used to treat itch for centuries, yet remarkably little is known about how counter-stimuli such as these induce itch relief. The present work evaluated the effects of alcoholic extracts of salvia (Salvia officinalis), thyme (Thymus vulgaris), and 2 pure compounds (thymol and menthol) on the viability of Echinococcus granulosus protoscolices in vitro.
