The histopathologic characteristics of the decidual reaction in the uterus of aging mice and the "mesenchymal lesion/tumor" in the urinary bladder of aging mice are compared and found to be very similar. Both lesions consist of spindle and epithelioid cells, may contain round eosinophilic granules and possess nuclear progesterone receptors and cytoplasmic desmin. The decidual reaction derives from endometrial stromal cells, while the "mesenchymal lesion" apparently develops from mesenchymal cells near the trigone area, carrying or developing progesterone receptors. If the hypothesis is accepte

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMT) are rare neoplasms characterized by secretion of FGF23, resulting in renal phosphate wasting and osteomalacia. This tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is cured by complete resection; thus, diagnosis is important, particularly on biopsy. Although PMT have a classic histologic appearance of bland spindled cells with conspicuous vascular network and characteristic smudgy basophilic matrix, there is a broad histologic spectrum and variant histologic patterns can make recognition difficult. Recent studies have demonstrated FN1-FGFR1 and FN1-FGF1 gene fusions in P

BACKGROUND: Oncogenous osteomalacia (OOM), which is also known as tumour-induced osteomalacia, is a rare condition associated with a neoplasm and a related systemic bone demineralization caused by renal phosphate wasting. OOM usually occurs in association with a variety of different mesenchymal tumours, and they were categorized into four distinct morphological patterns which they termed "phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour". Of its 4 histopathological subtypes, the mixed connective tissue variant is most commonly observed. Only 10% of cases appear in the head and neck regions and moreover, only 5

Tumor-induced osteomalacia is characterized by paraneoplastic defects in vitamin D metabolism, proximal renal tubular functions, and phosphate transport. The resulting hypophosphatemia can cause generalized pain and muscle weakness, which significantly affect the quality of life of the patients. Palliative treatment with calcium, vitamin D, and phosphate replacement is indicated for patients in whom the causative tumor cannot be completely resected. In this report we describe a case of tumor-induced osteomalacia in whom adequate oral doses of phosphate could not be used because of gastrointest

BACKGROUND: Malignant tumors of the head and neck are very rare in children, and their symptoms are usually uncharacteristic. In most cases these tumors are of mesenchymal origin: sarcoma or lymphoma. As their growth is quick and destructive, irreversible damage of adjacent structures or even infiltration of the endocranium occurs early and rapidly, resulting in a dramatic deterioration of survival rate and life quality in advanced stages.
PATIENTS: Three cases of a malignant head-and-neck tumor in children are described, stressing typical key symptoms which might often be neglected or misint

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a paraneoplastic syndrome associated with tumors that secrete phosphaturic hormones, most notably fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). The majority of tumors associated with this syndrome show stereotypical histological features and are now known as phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMTs). We postulated that immunohistochemistry for somatostatin receptor 2A (SSTR2A) could be used to definitively identify PMTs or other tumors that cause TIO. Immunohistochemistry for FGF23 and SSTR2A was performed on 15 tumors from 14 patients with a definite diagnosis of TIO.

Hypophosphatemia with osteomalacia may be due to a neoplasm that produces fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23), which inhibits phosphate reabsorption in the kidneys. Most of these tumors occur in bone or soft tissue and occasionally in the head, although intracranial occurrence is very rare. This report describes a tumor that caused hypophosphatemia and osteomalacia and was located entirely in the right anterior cranial fossa. Radiologically, the tumor resembled a meningioma; histologically, it was a low-grade phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor, mixed connective tissue variant (PMTMCT). After gros

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor is an extremely rare disease and is frequently associated with oncogenic osteomalacia showing paraneoplastic syndrome, which is characterized by phosphaturia, hypophosphatemia, normocalcemia, and decreased levels of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 associated with a tumor. A 2-year-old boy, who had a soft tissue tumor on his right thigh and previously diagnosed as myositis ossificans at 9-months-old, was presented with rachitic rosary and mildly enlarged tumor. Biochemical investigations showed hypophosphatemia, hyperphosphaturia, and an increased alkaline phosphatase le

We report a 31-year-old woman with tumor-induced osteomalacia suffering from slowly progressive bilateral muscle weakness predominantly in the proximal muscles and multiple bone pains for the past 2 years. She was unable to walk or raise her arms above the shoulder. We suspected tumor-induced osteomalacia due to decreased serum phosphate and 1alpha, 25 (OH),-vitamin D3 levels, low percentage of tubular reabsorption of phosphate (%TRP), adult onset, and no family history of osteomalacia. Regular imaging examinations could not detect the location of the primary tumor: however, indium-111 octreot

The protooncogene c-kit encoding transmembrane tyrosine kinase receptor protein plays an important role in the signal transduction pathway that regulates cellular growth and repair. Gene product KIT overexpression has been shown in a number of different neoplasms, particularly in mastocytosis and gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST). The morphologic similarity of uterine mesenchymal tumours and GIST, and the presence of KIT protein in normal uterine tissue, suggests that uterine sarcomas may have the same c-kit overexpression. The purpose of this study was to determine the overexpression of

Reported are the pathologic features of 17 mesenchymal tumors documented as causing osteomalacia or rickets. Although these tumors were histologically polymorphous, they were classifiable into four morphological groups. In the first group there were ten unique tumors showing mixed connective tissue features and containing variably prominent vascular and/or osteoclast-like giant-cell components. Tumors of this group also displayed focal microcystic changes, osseous metaplasia, and/or poorly developed cartilaginous areas. The cartilaginous areas sometimes showed considerable dystrophic calcifica

The review is based on the analysis of 17 national and 58 foreign publications dealing with the epidemiology, classification, age features, morphology, ultrastructure, histogenesis, complications and outcomes of primary malignant tumors of the liver in children. This analysis showed primary tumors of the liver in children to occupy the third place among neoplasia of the abdominal cavity and retroperitoneal space. There are no universally accepted terms for their designation and this prevents the development of a unique classification. Under 3 years, tumors develop predominantly from the embryo

A 68 Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT scan was conducted to locate the causative tumor responsible for suspected tumor-induced osteomalacia in a 56-year-old woman. The PET/CT images showed a focus in the right occipital region. Subsequent MRI showed an extra-axial nodule in the right occipital region, mimicking a meningioma. Although rare, an intracranial phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor was still suspected because of the typical clinical settings. Finally, phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor was confirmed by the postoperative pathology.

This is a classification of tumours of fibrous tissue, fat, muscle, blood and lymph vessels, and mast cells, irrespective of the region of the body in which they arise. Tumours of fibrous tissue are divided into fibroma, fibrosarcoma (including "canine haemangiopericytoma"), other sarcomas, equine sarcoid, and various tumour-like lesions. The histological appearance of the tumours is described and illustrated with photographs.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm associated with tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) and elevated serum FGF-23. Common in extremities, PMT rarely occurs in sinonasal region. We report a series of sinonasal PMT diagnosed at our institute over a 6-year period. Six cases of sinonasal PMT were identified during this period, of which five presented with features of TIO. Median age of patients was 45.5 years. All six tumors were composed of stellate to spindled cells, with prominent staghorn vasculature in four cases. Typical smudgy matrix was seen in all cases, but o

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumours (PMTs) are rare benign tumours that secrete fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), leading to phosphate wasting, disordered vitamin D metabolism and impaired bone mineralisation, clinically known as tumour-induced osteomalacia. PMTs are frequently misdiagnosed due to rarity and non-specific presentation. We report a case of a male in his 60s who presented to the hospital with 7 years of progressive muscle weakness and diffuse pain, resulting in inability to walk. His work-up was significant for hypophosphataemia with imaging showing chronic bilateral femoral neck
