Multi-season mobile monitoring of intra-urban heat and pollution gradients in a rapidly urbanizing coastal Indian city.

This study presents a spatially explicit, seasonally resolved analysis of the intra-urban thermal heterogeneity in Chennai, a rapidly urbanizing tropical megacity along India's southeast coast. Leveraging mobile environmental surveys across 81 georeferenced sites spanning six land-use zones, data on temperature, humidity, PM2.5, PM10, CO₂, and formaldehyde were collected during nighttime in summer and winter seasons. Thermal comfort was assessed using the thermal humidity index (THI), while spatial variability was visualized using GIS-based heat maps and inverse distance weighting (IDW) interp

Infrared thermal imaging to determine temperature parameters of dengue vector habitats across ecological regions of Nepal: a pilot feasibility study.

Dengue is a major vector-borne disease in Nepal, driven by container-breeding Aedes mosquitoes that thrive in domestic, urban settings. Its risk is increasing from the lowland Terai to the Hill and Mountain regions due to urbanisation and global warming. Practical and innovative approaches are needed to better understand the impact on Aedes mosquito habitats that are the main targets for vector control. We conducted a pilot feasibility study to characterise Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus breeding sites, examine physicochemical parameters (total dissolved solids, pH, salinity, dissolved oxy

A scoping review of the impacts of forest cover dynamics on acari-borne diseases: Beyond forest fragmentation.

Forest cover has undergone significant changes accelerating over recent decades. Acari vectors such as ticks and chigger mites are intricately linked to forest ecosystems because of the suitable hosts and microclimates provided. However, the implications of forest cover change on Acari vectors and their pathogens remain poorly understood. This study investigates the impacts of forest cover dynamics on Acari-borne diseases risk worldwide through a comprehensive review of the literature. We conducted a scoping review following the PRISMA Method to retrieve citations related to forest cover dynam

Tree Cover and Temperature Shape the Distribution of Epiphytic Pleurozia in Asia: Forest Havens in a Warming Climate.

Pleurozia (Pleuroziaceae, Marchantiophyta) is an evolutionarily and ecologically significant genus of epiphytic liverworts, primarily distributed in tropical and subtropical montane forests. However, the effects of climate change on its distribution remain poorly understood. In this study, we employed the MaxEnt model to predict the potential distribution patterns of Pleurozia in Asia at both the genus and species levels under current and future climate scenarios (SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5 for 2050 and 2070). The results revealed that evergreen broadleaf forest cover, temperature variability (annu

Environmental factors influencing mosquito breeding and malaria transmission using geospatial technologies in the Wabi Shebele sub-basin, Ethiopia.

Malaria is a life-threatening disease influenced by environmental factors such as temperature, vegetation, water availability, altitude, and rainfall, which shape mosquito breeding and transmission. This study aimed to assess environmental factors influencing mosquito breeding and malaria transmission using geospatial techniques in the Wabi Shebele sub-basin of Ethiopia. Seven key environmental factors: Land use land cover (LULC) types, land surface temperature (LST), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), normalized difference water index (NDWI), normalized difference moisture index (

Desiccation resistance in tropical insects: causes and mechanisms underlying variability in a Panama ant community.

Desiccation resistance, the ability of an organism to reduce water loss, is an essential trait in arid habitats. Drought frequency in tropical regions is predicted to increase with climate change, and small ectotherms are often under a strong desiccation risk. We tested hypotheses regarding the underexplored desiccation potential of tropical insects. We measured desiccation resistance in 82 ant species from a Panama rainforest by recording the time ants can survive desiccation stress. Species' desiccation resistance ranged from 0.7 h to 97.9 h. We tested the desiccation adaptation hypothesis,

Black wildebeest seek shade less and use solar orientation behavior more than do blue wildebeest.

Many ungulates, including wildebeest, seek shade and orient their bodies relative to incoming solar radiation in order to reduce environmental heat loads. Blue (Connochaetes taurinus) and black wildebeest (Connochaetes gnou), which co-exist artificially in some reserves in South Africa, are thought to adopt different thermoregulatory behaviors to mitigate high environmental heat loads. However, whether or not blue and black wildebeest use different behaviors to reduce heat loads in regions where they co-occur has never previously been examined. We compared the shade seeking and solar orientati

Malaria transmission intensity and dynamics of clinical malaria incidence in a mountainous forest region of Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Malaria transmission is heterogeneous. Villages close to each other may have very different transmission characteristics. The presence and abundance of malaria vectors is governed by local ecology and microclimate. Knowledge of the dynamics of transmission is important for planning and evaluation of malaria control strategies. This study investigated the heterogeneity of malaria transmission in preparation for a vaccine trial and offers insights into dynamics of malaria incidence in the forest zone of Ghana. METHODS: Malaria transmission was assessed in four villages with differen

Multi-locus allelic architecture underlying natural variation in leaf rolling in japonica rice.

Leaf rolling is a key component of rice canopy architecture that affects light interception, microclimate formation, and planting density. The contribution of naturally occurring allelic variation to quantitative variation in leaf rolling within cultivated rice remains poorly understood, while extreme leaf rolling caused by loss-of-function mutations often results in detrimental pleiotropic effects. Herein, we examined how multi-locus allelic variation contributes to natural variation in leaf rolling within japonica rice. Leaf rolling was quantified based on the leaf rolling index (LRI) using

Warming Reduces Cold Hardiness of Boreal Plants but Damage Risk Varies by Species and Season.

Winter warming is altering plant exposure to cold events, making it increasingly important to understand how cold hardiness dynamics respond across the dormant season. Using the Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE) experiment in northern Minnesota, we measured bud cold hardiness across four dormant seasons (2021-2025). There, a boreal peatland community was exposed to continuous active whole ecosystem warming across five levels (+0.00°C to +9.00°C) combined with atmospheric and elevated CO2 (+500 ppm) in open-top chambers. Cold hardiness of two overstory (Larix la

Study protocol for an observational panel study of heat strain in the general adult population in Basse Santa Su, The Gambia.

Heat is among the most hazardous environmental factors for human health, but humidity's role in heat-related health effects remains unclear. This study will assess the effect of humid heat and other environmental conditions on health in a representative population in Basse Santa Su, The Gambia, a region at high risk of humid heat exposure. We will examine the association between humid heat exposure and physiological heat strain, identify vulnerable sub-groups, and evaluate adaptive behaviours. We will recruit 60-90 healthy adults from Basse Santa Su and surrounding areas. Participants will be

Correlation of animal-based parameters with environment-based parameters in an on-farm welfare assessment of growing pigs.

Nine pig farms were evaluated for the welfare quality in Korea using animal- and environment-based parameters (particularly air quality parameters) during the winter of 2013. The Welfare Quality® (WQ®) protocol consists of 12 criteria within four principles. The WQ® protocol classifies farms into four categories ranging from 'excellent' to 'not classified'. Each of these criteria has specific measures for calculating scores. Calculations for the welfare scores were conducted online using the calculation model in the WQ® protocol. Environment-based parameters like microclimate (i.e., temperatur

Plant responses to gaseous pollutants, biochemical and transcriptomic insights.

Atmospheric gaseous pollutants sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), ozone (O3), and carbon monoxide (CO) increasingly co-occur in crop canopies and cause damage that spans atmospheric chemistry, redox signaling, and whole-leaf function. Prior work is often fragmented by single pollutant, single endpoints, or single scale, which limits mechanistic comparability and makes it difficult to build computationally useful models that generalize across environments. This synthesis integrates the atmospheric-to-cellular continuum in a form tended for quantitative plant science and computational

High resolution niche models of malaria vectors in northern Tanzania: a new capacity to predict malaria risk?

BACKGROUND: Malaria transmission rates in Africa can vary dramatically over the space of a few kilometres. This spatial heterogeneity reflects variation in vector mosquito habitat and presents an important obstacle to the efficient allocation of malaria control resources. Malaria control is further complicated by combinations of vector species that respond differently to control interventions. Recent modelling innovations make it possible to predict vector distributions and extrapolate malaria risk continentally, but these risk mapping efforts have not yet bridged the spatial gap to guide on-t

FLEA PARASITISM AND HOST SURVIVAL IN A PLAGUE-RELEVANT SYSTEM: THEORETICAL AND CONSERVATION IMPLICATIONS.

Plague is a bacterial zoonosis of mammalian hosts and flea vectors. The disease is capable of ravaging rodent populations and transforming ecosystems. Because plague mortality is likely to be predicted by flea parasitism, it is critical to understand vector dynamics. It has been hypothesized that paltry precipitation and reduced vegetative production predispose herbivorous rodents to malnourishment and flea parasitism, and flea parasitism varies directly with plague mortality. We evaluated these hypotheses on five colonies of Utah prairie dogs (UPDs; Cynomys parvidens), on the Awapa Plateau, U

Abiotic and habitat drivers of tick vector abundance, diversity, phenology and human encounter risk in southern California.

The distribution, abundance and seasonal activity of vector species, such as ticks and mosquitoes, are key determinants of vector-borne disease risk, and are strongly influenced by abiotic and habitat conditions. Despite the numerous species of tick vectors in the heavily populated North American West Coast, all but Ixodes pacificus, the primary vector of the Lyme disease spirochete, is poorly characterized with regard to seasonal activity patterns and fine scale drivers of distribution and abundance, particularly in heavily populated regions of southern California. This lack of knowledge inhi
