Cyanobacteria are cosmopolitan, important components of biomass with a remarkable ability to synthesize a diverse array of bioactive compounds, some of which may have toxic effects on other organisms and ecosystems. In this study, filamentous cyanobacterial strains isolated predominantly from temperate European freshwaters (Aphanizomenon, Chrysosporum, Cuspidothrix, Dolichospermum, Planktothrix, Raphidiopsis), with a subset from Arctic waters (Microcoleus, Phormidesmis), were qualitatively screened for commonly studied cyanometabolites, using immunoassays and chromatographic techniques. We als

Exposure to cyanobacterial hepatotoxins has been linked to the promotion and increased incidence of liver cancer in pre-clinical and epidemiologic studies. The family of hepatotoxins, microcystins (MCs), are produced by over 40 cyanobacterial species found in harmful algal blooms (HABs) worldwide, with MC-LR being the most common and potent MC congener. In the current study, we hypothesized that the low-dose chronic ingestion of Microcystis cyanotoxins via drinking water would promote liver carcinogenesis in pre-initiated mice. Four groups of C3H/HeJ mice received one intraperitoneal (i.p.) in

BACKGROUND: Agricultural phosphorus enrichment of freshwater ecosystems drives eutrophication and cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (HABs) that contaminate drinking water, recreational sites, and food webs with cyanotoxins. Translating this environmental science into clinical practice for primary care physicians remains limited.
OBJECTIVES: This narrative review traced the causal chain from agricultural phosphorus transport and cyanobacterial bloom ecology through cyanotoxin-mediated health consequences. The goal is to give primary care physicians a practical, One Health-based resource for

The cyanobacterial response to pharmaceuticals is less frequently investigated compared to green algae. Pharmaceuticals can influence not only the growth rate of cyanobacteria culture, but can also cause changes at the cellular level. The effect of diclofenac (DCF) as one of the for cyanobacteria has been rarely tested, and DCF has never been applied with cellular biomarkers. The aim of this work was to test the response of two unicellular cyanobacteria (Synechocystis salina and Microcystis aeruginosa) toward DCF (100 mg L-1) under photoautotrophic growth conditions. Such endpoints were analyz

A novel Ag3PO4/ZnWO4-modified graphite felt electrode (AZW@GF) was prepared by drop coating method and applied to photoelectrocatalytic removal of harmful algae. Results showed that approximately 99.21% of chlorophyll a and 91.57% of Microcystin-LR (MCLR) were degraded by the AZW@GF-Pt photoelectrocatalytic system under the optimal operating conditions with a rate constant of 0.02617 min-1 and 0.01416 min-1, respectively. The calculated synergistic coefficient of photoelectrocatalytic algal removal and MC-LR degradation by the AZW@GF-Pt system was both larger than 1.9. In addition, the experim

Marine toxins are known among several causes of toxin induced renal injury. Enzymatic mechanism by phospholipase A2 is responsible for acute kidney injury (AKI) in sea snake envenoming without any change in cardiac output and systemic vascular resistance. Cnidarian toxins form pores in the cell membrane with Ca influx storm resulting in cell death. Among plankton toxins domoic acid, palytoxin and maitotoxin cause renal injury by ion transport into the cell through ion channels resulting in renal cell swelling and lysis. Okadaic acid, calyculin A, microcystin LR and nodularin cause AKI by serin

The extensive spread of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) in the aquatic environment has attracted widespread attention. The toxicity of cadmium (Cd) combined with microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) toward freshwater algae Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) was investigated to evaluate the environmental behavior of the Cd complexation in fresh water. Cd alone has the highest toxicity to algae. Both MPs and NPs also have a negative effect on the growth of algae as individual components due to their adsorption of nutrients and disruption of the alga's activity in a single MP

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) - proliferated algae densities, often producing toxins - have increasingly been found in ocean and coastal areas. Recent studies show that rising temperatures contribute to HAB occurrence, but the broader influence of climate change on these outbreaks is less quantified. Of particular concern is the limited research on HAB toxin effects under varying temperatures, especially regarding primary consumers such as copepods, a crucial component of aquatic ecosystems. Therefore, we examined the impact of marine toxins on the harpacticoid copepod Nitokra spinipes, a model

Cyanobacteria are ubiquitous phototrophic bacteria that inhabit diverse environments across the planet. Seasonally, they dominate many eutrophic lakes impacted by excess nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) forming dense accumulations of biomass known as cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms or cyanoHABs. Their dominance in eutrophic lakes is attributed to a variety of unique adaptations including N and P concentrating mechanisms, N₂ fixation, colony formation that inhibits predation, vertical movement via gas vesicles, and the production of toxic or otherwise bioactive molecules. While some of these

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) in coastal British Columbia (BC), Canada, negatively impact the salmon aquaculture industry. One disease of interest to salmon aquaculture is Net Pen Liver Disease (NPLD), which induces severe liver damage and is believed to be caused by the exposure to microcystins (MCs). To address the lack of information about algal toxins in BC marine environments and the risk they pose, this study investigated the presence of MCs and other toxins at aquaculture sites. Sampling was carried out using discrete water samples and Solid Phase Adsorption Toxin Tracking (SPATT) sampler

Pharmaceutical residues are increasingly detected in aquatic environments as a result of continuous anthropogenic inputs. These compounds represent emerging contaminants capable of affecting primary producers, including cyanobacteria, which play key ecological roles in freshwater systems and are often responsible for harmful algal blooms. This review critically examines experimental studies evaluating the effects of pharmaceuticals on Synechococcus sp. and Microcystis aeruginosa - two cosmopolitan and widely investigated cyanobacteria. The available evidence indicates that pharmaceutical expos

Cyanobacterial and harmful algal blooms are common components of the waters in and around Southwest Florida and are sufficiently frequent to be of concern with respect to adverse effects on short- and long-term human and animal health. Currently, the contribution of airborne exposure to cyanobacterial toxins is not as advanced as for the other known human exposure routes such as consumption of contaminated water or fish. An airborne monitoring device named Airborne Detection for Algae Monitoring (ADAM) was developed to collect air samples in the proximity of algal and/or cyanobacterial blooms

In this work, a label-free nonenzymatic photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor is successfully developed for the detection of a typical pollutant, microcystin-LR (MC-LR), based on a visible-light-responsive alloy oxide, with highly ordered and vertically aligned Ti-Fe-O nanotubes (NTs) as substrates. Ti-Fe-O NTs consisting mainly of TiO2 and atomically doped Fe2O3 are in situ prepared on a Ti-Fe alloy by electrochemical anodic oxidation. Using a simple electrochemical deposition technique, reduced graphene oxide (RGO) could be grown onto Ti-Fe-O NTs, exhibiting significant bifunctions. It not only

Many freshwater ecosystems are increasingly altered by browning (coloured dissolved organic matter enrichment) and eutrophication (phosphorus and nitrogen enrichment). Recently, Creed et al. (2018) proposed that these stressors will differentially modify microcystins (MC, produced by cyanobacteria) and methylmercury (MeHg, methylated by bacteria) production and bioaccumulation, with MC peaking under high nutrient, low browning conditions, while MeHg peaks at higher dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations. However, this prediction remains largely untested. To explore whether environmental

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) occur worldwide and can cause ingestion and inhalation exposure to microcystin and other potent toxins. This study develops life course exposure measures for cyanobacteria for application in population studies and then associates these measures with the survival of individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The exposure measures utilize an individual's residence history, date of disease onset, and satellite data from the Cyanobacteria Assessment Network. Residence duration for selected exposure windows referenced to disease onset date

Microcystin-LR (MC-LR), a potent hepatotoxin can cause liver damages. However, research on hepatic lipid metabolism caused by long-term exposure to environmental concentrations MC-LR is limited. In the current study, mice were exposed to various low concentrations of MC-LR (0, 1, 30, 60, 90, 120 μg/L in the drinking water) for 9 months. The general parameters, serum and liver lipids, liver tissue pathology, lipid metabolism-related genes and proteins of liver were investigated. The results show that chronic MC-LR exposure had increased the levels of triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC)

Frequency of cyanobacterial blooms has increased significantly, degrading drinking water quality and exposing humans and animals to toxins such as microcystin-LR (MC-LR), cylindrospermopsin, and anatoxin-A. Previously, we selected nanostructured magnetic composites of mesoporous carbon and activated carbon among thirteen materials for the removal of these toxins by adsorption. This work explores methods for enhancing these composites performance, and assesses their removal efficiency in natural water samples and their toxicity using in vivo models. Oxidation of P-Mes with H₂O₂ improved the ads

The outbreaks of cyanobacterial blooms have caused severe threat to aquatic ecosystem and public health. In this work, electrochemical technology with RuO2/IrO2/Ti (RIT) or/and Al as anode for cyanobacterial bloom control and simultaneous water purification were studied. Compared with RIT-Al and Al electrodes, RIT exhibited the highest effects on bloom algae inactivation and inhibition of algae regrowth. Live/dead analysis, SEM, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant system activities revealed that RIT could disintegrate bloom flocs and damage embedded algal cells due to h
