The effect of protein aggregate morphology on phase separation in mixtures with polysaccharides.

The morphology of aggregates formed by heating the globular protein β-lactoglobulin (β-lg) changes with the addition of a small amount of CaCl2, from small strands to larger spherical aggregates (microgels). We investigated the effect of this morphological transition on the structure of mixtures of β-lg aggregates with the polysaccharide κ-carrageenan (κ-car), using confocal laser scanning microscopy and dynamic light scattering. The change in the morphology of the β-lg aggregates strongly reduced the κ-car concentration at which the system phase separated. As a consequence a dramatic change i

Primary DNA damage in chrome-plating workers.

In order to evaluate the primary DNA damage due to occupational exposure to chromium (VI), DNA strand-breaks and apoptosis in peripheral lymphocytes were measured in a group of 19 chrome-plating workers. DNA strand-breaks was assessed by alkaline (pH>13) single-cell microgel electrophoresis ('comet') assay, while apoptosis was measured by flow-cytometry after propidium iodide staining of the cells. Concentrations of chromium in urine, erythrocytes and lymphocytes were investigated as biological indicators of exposure. A group of 18 hospital workers (control group I) and another 20 university p

[Genotoxic effect of PCP and lindane on human epithelial tonsil cells].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Experimental and epidemiological studies have provided evidence that pentachlorophenol (PCP) and gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane (lindane) may pose a potential carcinogenic risk for human epithelial cells of the upper aerodigestive tract. In the past, these two substances have been used for military and nonmilitary purposes, e.g., for impregnation of textiles and uniforms. In this study, we investigated the genotoxic effect of PCP and lindane on human mucosal tissue from the tonsils. METHODS: In epithelia obtained from the tonsillar mucosa removed during surgery, cell vi

Enhancing surimi structure by lycopene-fennel extract Pickering emulsion: application in 3D printing analog beef with dynamic color and flavor retention.

Surimi is regarded as an ideal ink for 3D food printing; however, achieving desirable texture and flavor profiles in 3D-printed meat analogs remains challenging. In this study, myofibrillar protein microgels (MMP) were extracted from surimi and used as Pickering stabilizers to fabricate lycopene- and fennel extract-loaded emulsions with varying oil volume fractions. The emulsions were then incorporated into surimi to modulate its structural, rheological, and printing properties. The Pickering emulsions with an appropriate oil volume fraction exhibited densely packed droplet networks with enhan

Design-Driven Gel-Based Delivery Systems for Bioactives in Sports Nutrition.

Sports nutrition products are increasingly expected to deliver bioactive compounds that aid in recovery, reduce fatigue, and support physiological regulation, going beyond merely providing energy and nutrients. However, many bioactive compounds face challenges such as poor aqueous dispersibility, limited stability, low bioaccessibility, or inefficient absorption, which hinder their practical use in real food products. This review critically examines food-grade, gel-based delivery systems for bioactive compounds in sports nutrition from a design-driven perspective. It focuses on hydrogels, micr

Convergent roles of GDF-15 in mechanotransduction, vascular disorganization, and immune suppression in melanoma.

Melanoma, particularly in its advanced forms, remains one of the most lethal skin cancers, with limited effective treatments for both common cutaneous subtypes and rarer variants such as acral melanoma. The effects of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and other cancer-cell extrinsic processes on melanoma development remain underexplored. This study identifies growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) as a mechanosensing-regulated driver of melanoma pathogenesis across melanoma types. GDF-15 is shown here to be mechanically induced by ECM rigidity and compressive forces occurring during metastatic

Dry mouth diagnosis and saliva substitutes-A review from a textural perspective.

The aim of this review is to assess the objective and subjective diagnosis, as well as symptomatic topical treatment of dry mouth conditions with a clear focus on textural perspective. We critically examine both the current practices as well as outline emerging possibilities in dry mouth diagnosis and treatment, including a patent scan for saliva substitutes. For diagnosis, salivary flow rates and patient-completed questionnaires have proven to be useful tools in clinical practice. To date, objective measurements of changes in mechanical properties of saliva via rheological, adsorption, and tr

Gene-programmed micro-nano metabolic engine drives coupled osteogenic-angiogenic regeneration.

Effective bone healing is accompanied by coupled osteogenic-angiogenic regeneration, a process that critically depends on metabolic communication between bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and endothelial cells through an endogenous metabolic axis in which endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) catalyzes the conversion of l-arginine into nitric oxide (NO). However, within hypoxic microenvironments such as those present in large bone defects, the restricted expression of eNOS and the depletion of its substrate synergistically suppress NO biosynthesis, thereby impairing osteogenic-angi

Mechanical Tuning of the Cell Microenvironment Using a Biomimetic Hydrogel System for Articular Cartilage Tissue Engineering.

Providing a functional pericellular matrix (PCM) by fine-tuning the microenvironment of the articular chondrocytes (ACs) can greatly improve the outcomes of articular cartilage tissue engineering. While harvesting ACs with their PCM (chondrons) results in a low cell yield and a heterogeneous mixture of ACs and chondrons, microscale hydrogels could be used for mechanical tuning of the cell microenvironment. This may enable the use of stiffer bulk materials, improving the load-bearing capacity of the construct. This study investigates the effect of microenvironmental stiffness, independent of to

Which Biopolymers Are Better for the Fabrication of Multilayer Capsules? A Comparative Study Using Vaterite CaCO3 as Templates.

The polymer layer-by-layer assembly is accounted among the most attractive approaches for the design of advanced drug delivery platforms and biomimetic materials in 2D and 3D. The multilayer capsules can be made of synthetic or biologically relevant (e.g., natural) polymers. The biopolymers are advantageous for bioapplications; however, the design of such "biocapsules" is more challengeable due to intrinsic complexity and lability of biopolymers. Until now, there are no systematic studies that report the formation mechanism for multilayer biocapsules templated upon CaCO3 crystals. This work ev

Advances in metal nanoparticle-based catalysts for nitroarene reduction: from mechanistic understanding to sustainable design.

The catalytic reduction of nitroarenes (NAr) into their corresponding aminoarenes (AAr) represents a pivotal transformation in both environmental remediation and fine-chemical synthesis. In recent years, both noble and non-noble metal nanoparticle (MNP) systems have emerged as highly efficient and recyclable catalysts for these reduction reactions under mild conditions with reductants such as sodium borohydride (NaBH4). This critical review comprehensively analyzes the synthesis, kinetics, capping agents, and catalytic mechanisms of MNP-based systems, which highlight the role of particle size,

Development and Application of Oil-Based Thermo-Responsive Gel Lost Circulation Material SBR-g-PSA.

Lost circulation of oil-based drilling fluids (OBDFs) in deep, fractured formations remains a critical challenge, primarily due to the poor retention and low pressure-bearing capacity of conventional materials on oil-wet rock surfaces. To bridge this gap, this study reports the development and field application of a novel thermo-responsive gel (SBR-g-PSA). Synthesized by grafting highly lipophilic stearyl acrylate (SA) onto a flexible styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) backbone, the microgel exploits a UCST-like (Upper Critical Solution Temperature) phase transition behavior. At surface temperatur

REFRESH-Reversible Embedded Bioprinting for Faster Reinforcement and Structuring of dECM Hydrogels.

Fabrication of complex, multi-layered tissue architecture using decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM)-based hydrogel ink is fundamentally limited by the biomaterial's inherent mechanical fragility and slow gelation kinetics, which severely compromise structural fidelity. Herein, we present REFRESH-Reversible Embedded Bioprinting for Faster Reinforcement and Structuring of dECM Hydrogels, a next-generation embedded bioprinting platform designed for high-fidelity fabrication of anatomically relevant tissue constructs using dECM hydrogels. At the core of this system is a custom-engineered po

Microfluidic dual picoinjection based encapsulation of hemoglobin in alginate microcapsules reinforced by a poly(L-lysine)-g-poly(ethylene glycol).

Hemoglobin (Hb) encapsulation inside polysaccharide hydrogels has been considered a possible red blood cell (RBC) surrogate in transfusiology. Here we report on the microfluidic dual picoinjection assisted synthesis of Hb encapsulated alginate-poly(L-lysine)-g-poly(ethylene glycol) beads. This process is realized by the on-chip injections of blended Hb alginate solutions in emulsified aqueous calcium chloride (CaCl2) droplets followed by a subsequent injection of an aqueous PLL-g-PEG into each emulsified aqueous droplet. The proposed fabrication approach was realized using a flow-focusing and

A hydrogel platform for co-delivery of immunomodulatory proteins for pancreatic islet allografts.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D), an autoimmune disorder in which the insulin-producing β-cells in the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas are destroyed, afflicts over 1.6 million Americans. Although pancreatic islet transplantation has shown promise in treating T1D, continuous use of required immunosuppression regimens limits clinical islet transplantation as it poses significant adverse effects on graft recipients and does not achieve consistent long-term graft survival with 50%-70% of recipients maintaining insulin independence at 5 years. T cells play a key role in graft rejection, and rebalancing p

Trends in hydrogel-based encapsulation technologies for advanced cell therapies applied to limb ischemia.

Ischemia occurs when blood flow is reduced or restricted, leading to a lack of oxygen and nutrient supply and removal of metabolites in a body part. Critical limb ischemia (CLI) is a severe clinical manifestation of peripheral arterial disease. Atherosclerosis serves as the main cause of CLI, which arises from the deposition of lipids in the artery wall, forming atheroma and causing inflammation. Although several therapies exist for the treatment of CLI, pharmacotherapy still has low efficacy, and vascular surgery often cannot be performed due to the pathophysiological heterogeneity of each pa

Efficient removal of methylene blue by sodium alginate microspheres immobilizing Aspergillus niger and Fe3O4/biochar.

The extensive discharge of synthetic dyes from textile and pharmaceutical industries has created an urgent demand for eco-friendly and cost-effective purification technologies. In this study, a magnetic bio-based hybrid microgel adsorbent (SAFBCA) was fabricated by incorporating Fe3O4/biochar (FBC) and Aspergillus niger (A. niger) into a sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel matrix. Physicochemical characterization confirmed the formation of porous microspheres with a moderate specific surface area (8.22 m2 g⁻1) and sufficient magnetic responsiveness (9.31 emu g⁻1) for facile recovery.
