Skull Fracture Patterns and Morphologies Among Fatal Motorcycle Traffic Accident Victims in Vietnam.

We aim to describe morphological structures of skull fractures and relevant factors in motorcycle accident victims in Vietnam. This work represents a retrospective cross-sectional study based on forensic reports of fatal motorcycle accident victims. Between January 2013 and August 2019, a total of 226 fatal motorcycle accident patients with skull fracture diagnoses were enrolled. Linear and depressed fractures were the common patterns (46.0% and 37.2% of cases, respectively), whereas stellate (11.5%) fractures were rare. Fractures of the temporal bone (68.6% of cases) and basilar skull (60.6%)

Relation between riding pleasure and vehicle dynamics - Results from a motorcycle field test.

Powered two-wheelers are a common means of transport all over the world. In several countries, primary motorcycles with high displacement involve another purpose, namely motorcycling is a leisure activity. Motorcycles are used as tools of transport pleasure as opposed to being purely used for individual commuting purposes. The aim of the current study involves investigating the relation between experienced riding pleasure and riding behavior in a field test. Specifically, N = 12 motorcyclists between 21 and 66 years of age were observed while riding for approximately 8 h on public roads. The m

Methods of Measuring and Processing Signals during Tests of the Exposure of a Motorcycle Driver to Vibration and Noise.

The paper presents a new method of measuring a motorcycle driver's exposure to vibration and noise. This method uses the simultaneous measurement of vibration and noise at the points of their direct influence on the motorcycle driver, and the measurement is carried out in real traffic conditions. The vibration of the motorcycle's handlebars, footrest and seat as well as the noise reaching the beginning of the motorcyclist's ear canal are recorded. These signals correspond to the direct impact of vibration energy on the upper and lower limbs as well as the torso of a motorcycle driver and the a

Correlations between mobile phone use and other risky behaviours while riding a motorcycle.

Motorcyclist safety is a major concern in many developing countries. Understanding motorcycle riders' risky behaviours, particularly among the younger population, is essential to developing effective interventions. This paper explores the correlations between mobile phone use while riding and other risky riding behaviours as well as the relationships between perceived risks and risky riding behaviours, using an online survey of university students in Vietnam. Results show that calling while riding a motorcycle had the highest prevalence (74%) while reckless overtaking had the lowest prevalence

Comparing fracture patterns of younger versus older riders involved in nonfatal motorcycle accidents.

OBJECTIVE: The motorcyclist demographic is shifting to a larger proportion of riders over the age of 40. We sought to identify differences in orthopedic injury distribution and severity between 3 age cohorts and identify independent factors that contribute to fractures following a motorcycle collision (MCC). METHODS: A trauma registry at a level 1 trauma center was queried for motorcycle-related orthopedic injuries between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2014. Subjects were stratified into 3 age groups: Young (<40 years), middle-aged (40-59 years), and elderly (≥60 years). Age groups were c

[Occupational risk factors and perceptions of air pollution by motorcycle taxi drivers in Cotonou, Benin].

INTRODUCTION: Motorcycle taxis occupy a major place in urban transport. Motorcycle taxi drivers are exposed to occupational risk factors (ORF) including air pollution. The objective of this study was to evaluate these ORF among motorcycle taxi drivers and their perceptions of air pollution. METHODS: This mixed study was conducted on motorcycle taxi drivers in Cotonou. The qualitative study was based on focus groups concerning 16 items from the Participatory Occupational Risk Screening Guide (DEPARIS) until saturation and after triangulation of data. The quantitative study consisted of adminis

Trends in helmet use by motorcycle riders in the decades following the repeal of mandatory helmet laws.

Several US states repealed universal motorcycle helmet laws in the 1990s and 2000s. The purpose of this study was to examine national trends in helmet use among adult trauma patients with motorcycle-related injuries. We hypothesized that motorcycle helmet use declined over time. We retrospectively analyzed the National Trauma Data Bank's National Sample Program for 2003-2010. We also obtained data on US motorcycle fatalities reported in the Fatality Analysis Reporting System and population data from the U.S. Census Bureau to calculate motorcycle-related fatality rates over time. A total of 255

Motorcycle helmet use and the risk of head, neck, and fatal injury: Revisiting the Hurt Study.

Most studies find strong evidence that motorcycle helmets protect against injury, but a small number of controversial studies have reported a positive association between helmet use and neck injury. The most commonly cited paper is that of Goldstein (1986). Goldstein obtained and reanalyzed data from the Hurt Study, a prospective, on-scene investigation of 900 motorcycle collisions in the city of Los Angeles. The Goldstein results have been adopted by the anti-helmet community to justify resistance to compulsory motorcycle helmet use on the grounds that helmets may cause neck injuries due to t

Commercial motorcycle drivers' perceptions of risk and road safety in urban Nigeria: an explorative study.

Road traffic injury is a great public health challenge with an emerging trend of increasing rates and high mortality involving commercial motorcycles in Nigeria. A qualitative approach was used with 10 in-depth interviews conducted to explore the risk perceptions of commercial motorcyclists in Ibadan, Nigeria. The data analysis using manifest and latent content analysis resulted in an overarching theme: inadequate structures and internalised norms prevent change. The three themes leading to the overarching theme are: risk-taking as generally acceptable; risk-taking as an intrinsic part of occu

Rotational head trauma with callosal contusion and C6 fracture: a high-speed motorcycle accident.

We present the case of a 34-year-old Albanian male who was riding a motorcycle when he collided at high-speed with a four-wheel vehicle. After a triple pivotal rotation in the air at the moment of impact, he fell from the motorcycle to the ground. The clinical picture thereafter was one of deep coma, treated in the intensive care unit for nine days, until he regained consciousness and long-term rehabilitation procedures were put in place. The magnetic resonance and computed tomography images were very illustrative of a rotational head trauma mechanism, since in addition to multiple callosal he

Giant post-traumatic cyst after motorcycle injury: a case report with review of the pathogenesis.

Post-traumatic cysts of soft tissue usually occur at the junction of the subcutaneous fat and deep fascia, most often filled with serosanguinous fluid and lined with fibrous tissue. It appears as complication after severe injuries when crushing and shearing forces cause separation of the skin and subcutaneous fat from the deep fascia and muscle, creating a cavity filled with hematoma and liquefied fat. This rare condition calls Morel-Lavallee lesion, which was first described by this French physician in 1853 (Sterling et al., 1977; Tull and Borrelli, 2003). Magnetic resonance imaging is the mo

Modeling motorcycle helmet use in Iowa: evidence from six roadside observational surveys.

This paper investigates the influence of type of roadway, weather conditions and other factors on motorcycle helmet use rates in Iowa. Using data from six statewide roadside observational surveys of motorcycle helmet use, a bivariate probit model is estimated. The applied methodological approach allows for potentially interrelated choices of motorcycle helmet use by drivers and passengers to be examined. The estimation results can enhance our understanding of other factors than state helmet laws which correlate with motorcycle rider helmet use, and the effect that the presence of a passenger h

Avulsion of the perineal body in a single nulliparous woman following a motorcycle accident: a case report.

Miss OO was seen at the gynaecology clinic in April 2008 with history of a road traffic accident three years earlier. She was thrown off a motorcycle and fell astride a culvert, sustaining perineal injury. She was treated at a private hospital, but subsequently developed faecal incontinence and was usually soiled with faecal matter during coitus. Examination revealed loss of perineal body and reconstruction was done, with success. With increase in motorcycle accidents on our roads, many more gynaecologically-related traumas are bound to occur. Proper and timely referral will lead to improved m

Motorcycle helmet laws in the United States from 1990 to 2005: politics and public health.

The passage of universal helmet legislation requiring motorcycle riders of all ages to wear helmets is a timely and controversial issue with far-reaching public health implications, especially as the number of motorcycle fatalities continues to rise. In 2008, only 20 states had a universal helmet policy, an effective safety measure for reducing motorcycle fatalities and serious injuries. We used state-specific longitudinal data for the continental United States from 1990 through 2005 to determine which industry, political, economic, and demographic factors had a significant influence on the en
