BACKGROUND: Research on children with mumps reinfection after natural infection is limited; there are currently no studies on virus-specific antibody responses in paired sera or genotyping of isolated viruses.
METHODS: This study included 281 children (147 boys and 134 girls, age: 1.2-15.9 y) with primary mumps (240), mumps reinfection after natural infection (9), mumps after previous vaccination (26), and vaccine-associated mumps (6). We measured mumps-specific serum antibodies and analyzed isolated virus genes.

During a 2009-2010 mumps outbreak in a New York State village, a third dose of measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine was administered to children in three schools as a control measure. BACKGROUND: In 2006, a mumps outbreak occurred on a university campus despite ≥ 95% coverage of students with 2 doses of measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine. Using plasma samples from a blood drive held on campus before identification of mumps cases, we compared vaccine-induced preoutbreak mumps antibody levels between individuals who developed mumps (case patients) and those who did not develop mumps (nonpatients).

We examined the prevalence of mumps antibodies in the Israeli population in relation to mumps vaccination policy and past and subsequent incidence of disease. The levels of specific IgG antibodies against mumps were tested in 3330 residual sera collected during 1997-1998 from an age-stratified population sample. Against the background of a consistent MMR vaccination coverage of >90%, the age- and sex-adjusted seropositivity to mumps was 77.0%. No significant differences between genders were found. Islet cell antibodies were investigated in 127 non-diabetic children after mumps infection and in four out of seven children who developed diabetes mellitus shortly after active mumps vaccination. More than 2,000 U.S. mumps cases occurred in 2018. That's down from 6,000-plus cases CDC reported in both 2016 and 2017, but a far cry from the hundreds reported in 2012. Texas is not immune.
