Pyomyositis in a temperate climate. Presentation, diagnosis, and treatment.

The cases of eighteen patients who were treated for pyomyositis between 1970 and 1988 were evaluated. The diagnosis was often delayed because other primary diagnoses were considered, including muscle strain, synovitis, thrombophlebitis, and neoplasm, and because the symptoms were vague and prolonged (maximum duration, one year). The muscles around the hip and thigh were most commonly involved (twelve patients), and Staphylococcus aureus most commonly grew on culture (twelve patients). Computed tomography aided in the accurate diagnosis of the infection and of the extent of involvement. Incisio

Liquid-Based Cytologic Features of a Thyroid TFE3-Rearranged PEComa-Like Neoplasm: A Case Report.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm, and primary involvement of the thyroid gland is exceedingly rare. TFE3-rearranged PEComas constitute a distinct molecular subset characterized by epithelioid morphology and strong nuclear TFE3 expression. Cytologic descriptions of PEComa are limited, and to date, only three cytologic cases of TFE3-rearranged PEComa or PEComa-like neoplasm have been reported in the literature, none of which involved the thyroid gland. We report a case of thyroid TFE3-rearranged PEComa-like neoplasm in a 25-year-old woman who presented

Renal cell carcinoma with angioleiomyoma-like stroma: clinicopathological, immunohistochemical, and molecular features supporting classification as a distinct entity.

Rare renal epithelial neoplasms have been recognized to have an angioleiomyoma or leiomyoma-like proliferation of stromal smooth muscle; however, the nature of these tumors and their relationships to other renal cell carcinomas are poorly understood. We analyzed 23 such tumors for their clinicopathological, immunohistochemical, and cytogenetic features using fluorescence in situ hybridization. Twelve showed a homogeneous combination of features and were reclassified as renal cell carcinoma with angioleiomyoma-like stroma. These were composed of neoplastic glandular structures lined by cells wi

Dissecting leiomyomas of the uterus other than cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyomas: a report of eight cases.

We report eight cases of benign uterine smooth muscle neoplasms with unusual growth patterns and intramural dissection. All the patients in our series were of reproductive age or perimenopausal (range, 36-51 years) and had an enlarged uterus or a pelvic mass, with the exception of one lesion that was found incidentally in a patient treated for uterine prolapse. Three also had abnormal uterine bleeding. On gross examination, the lesions had an unusual appearance and were often lobulated and irregular with indistinct margins. On microscopic examination of all the lesions in this study, a dominan

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis as a paraneoplastic manifestation in the neuroendocrine tumor of stomach: a case report.

Motor neuron diseases have been reported as a rare paraneoplastic syndrome (PNS) of a systemic neoplasm. We present a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in association with neuroendocrine tumor (NET) of stomach, which is the first case of motor neuronopathy with underlying neuroendocrine tumor. A 79-year old woman presented with a two months history of progressive dysphagia, spastic dysarthria and marked fasciculation in her atrophic tongue. Gag reflexes were diminished bilaterally. Other cranial nerves were intact. In muscle testing there was significant atrophy in thenar and hy

Primary cutaneous perivascular epithelioid cell tumor: a clinicopathological and molecular reappraisal.

BACKGROUND: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is a rare neoplasm of uncertain histogenesis with a mixed myomelanocytic immunophenotype, rarely arising in the skin (primary cutaneous PEComa [pcPEComa]). OBJECTIVE: We analyzed the clinicopathological features of 8 pcPEComas, assayed for DNA copy number changes and for initiating mutations common in melanocytic neoplasms. METHODS: pcPEComas were evaluated using immunohistochemistry, comparative genomic hybridization, and DNA sequencing. RESULTS: pcPEComas were erythematous nodules, mostly in the lower extremities of women (5/8), com

Hypophosphatemic osteomalacia secondary to jaw phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor: a case report with literature review.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by renal phosphate wasting, resulting in hypophosphatemia and altered bone turnover. It is most frequently caused by phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMTs), a rare and distinct group of neoplasms. Patients with TIO exhibit clinical features of osteomalacia, including bone and muscle pain, severe muscle weakness, gait disturbance, and increased susceptibility to fracture. PMTs exhibit pananatomic distribution, in soft tissue or bones, but are most commonly found in the lower extremities, followed by the head and ne

Oral Leiomyoma in an Adult Male: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Oral leiomyomas are rare, benign neoplasms of smooth muscle origin, presenting as a solitary, asymptomatic, nodular mass. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we present the case of a 54-year-old male with a lesion in the midline of his hard palate, which was diagnosed as a localized benign leiomyoma, along with a review of the recent literature. DISCUSSION: Diagnosis of a leiomyoma must be based on the histopathological assessment of tissue as the clinical appearance is non-specific. The peak prevalence of head and neck leiomyoma is observed in the 4th and 5th decade of life with uncertain

Calcifying fibrous tumor of the adrenal gland.

Calcifying fibrous tumor is an uncommon entity with distinctive pathologic features. Most calcifying fibrous tumors involve the peripheral soft tissues or serosal surfaces, with reports of visceral examples of this lesion being extremely limited. We report the clinical and pathologic features of an unusual case of calcifying fibrous tumor occurring in the adrenal gland of a 32-year-old woman. Microscopically, the lesion was well circumscribed and composed of dense, poorly cellular collagenous tissue, scattered spindle cells, an inflammatory infiltrate consisting of plasma cells and lymphocytes

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma: A rare oral tumor.

Rhabdomyosarcoma is the malignant neoplasm of striated muscle and a relatively uncommon tumor of the oral cavity. Embryonal variety is the most common subtype, observed in children below 10 years of age but occasionally seen in adolescents and young adults. The present report describes a case of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in the left posterior buccal mucosa, with extension in the adjacent alveolus, soft palate, oropharynx and nasopharynx of a 17-year-old female.

Calcific myonecrosis: keys to early recognition.

Calcific myonecrosis is a rare, late sequela of trauma occurring almost exclusively in the lower extremity which may be confused with an aggressive primary neoplasm. The platelike mineralization pattern seen on radiographs is characteristic but not widely recognized by clinicians. Three cases of calcific myonecrosis are reported, unique in that two presented for care following infection and that one had extended to involve the muscle compartments of the foot, a previously unreported site.

Spontaneous retrobulbar hematoma on serial computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging: a case report.

An 83-year-old woman presented with a 10-day history of sudden-onset diplopia in the left eye, with no preceding trauma or anticoagulant use. Initial orbital magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on day 10 revealed a well-circumscribed retrobulbar lesion along the left inferior rectus muscle. The lesion showed heterogeneous T1 hyperintensity, low-to-intermediate T2 signal, and no definite solid enhancement, raising concern for a hemorrhagic orbital mass or neoplasm. Serial noncontrast computed tomography (CT) on days 20 and 49 showed progressive decreases in lesion size and attenuation. Follow-up M

A rare case of granular cell tumor in axillary cavity: an unusual occurrence.

Granular cell tumour (GCT) is a rare soft tissue neoplasm originally thought to arise from skeletal muscle but later recognized as of neural origin. It is most commonly found in the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and oral cavity. GCT typically presents as a painless, slow-growing nodule, often asymptomatic, though malignant cases tend to be larger and may present with pain. We present the case of a 48-year-old female that developed a painless subcutaneous swelling in the right axilla, initially suspected to be a sebaceous cyst. In November 2023, the lesion was excised, and histopathology confirmed

Clinical management of a patient with advanced mucosal malignant melanoma in the sinonasal area.

We describe a case of mucosal malignant melanoma in the sinonasal area of a 65-year-old woman. She presented with a history of nasal obstruction and epistaxis with subsequent tenderness, facial anesthesia involving cranial nerve V2, red eye, proptosis, diplopia, and conjunctival chemosis. Computed tomography detected a nonspecific solid mass that had involved the left maxillary sinus and surrounding tissues, with extension into the nasal cavity and invasion of the orbital floor and eye muscles. Histopathologic examination of the neoplasm revealed that it was a malignant melanoma. We performed

A rare benign parotid gland tumor: angiomyolipoma.

Angiomyolipomas are benign neoplasms composed of smooth muscle, vasculature, and mature adipose tissue, which most commonly occur in the kidney and located in the head and neck region. A very rare neoplasm, there are only 3 cases of angiomyolipoma in the parotid gland that have been reported to date. Here, we report a case of a 38-year-old man who had a slow-growing mass in the parotid gland for the past 7 years. The results of a physical examination revealed a rubbery mass that was 2.5 cm in diameter in the below superficial lobe of the left parotid gland. A computed tomographic scan showed a

Leiomyosarcoma of the tongue with multiple metastases: a case report and review of literature.

Leiomyosarcoma of the tongue is an extremely rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasm and only 25 cases have been described in the English-language literature, 22 of which were primary lesions. A case is presented of a 54-year-old female patient diagnosed with primary leiomyosarcoma of the tongue with lung and multiple soft tissue metastases. This case is especially unusual because widespread soft tissue metastases resulted, involving the lung and skeletal muscle in 3 separate sites. Unfortunately, curative treatment was not possible. Arteriovenous haemangioma in two dogs and a cat.

Haemangiomas are benign vascular tumours and several types can be distinguished based on microscopical features. Capillary and cavernous haemangiomas are most commonly reported in man and domestic animals. Arteriovenous haemangiomas are rare variants in man and herein we describe this subtype in two dogs and one cat. One dog and the cat presented with a cutaneous vascular lesion, the other dog with a bleeding mass in the tongue. Surgically excised masses comprised non-encapsulated proliferations of variably sized arterial- and venous-like vessels, accompanied by clusters of capillaries and imm

Molecular and cytogenetic characterization of plexiform leiomyomata provide further evidence for genetic heterogeneity underlying uterine fibroids.

The plexiform variant of uterine leiomyomata (UL) is named for its ribbons or nests of smooth muscle cells that have a rounded, epithelioid shape caused by their entrapment in abundant extracellular matrix. Plexiform UL are currently classified as epithelioid smooth muscle tumors alongside the less predictable, "true" epithelioid tumors (ie, leiomyoblastomas). Karyotypes of six plexiform UL cases were studied, and their abnormalities were found to differ from those of leiomyoblastomas. Analyses using real-time polymerase chain reaction, immunohistochemistry, and fluorescence in situ hybridizat
