The Hypoalgesic Effects of Pleasant Music Are Not Fully Explained by Distraction.

BACKGROUND: One explanation for the hypoalgesic effects of pleasant music is that these stimuli impact pain by eliciting positive emotion. However, it is not clear how much of this effect is due to attentional bias, as pleasant music may more effectively capture attention than neutral or aversive control conditions. As pain reduction by distraction and emotion represent distinct mechanistic pathways, differentiating the role of attention from that of emotion and mood is necessary to understand how pleasant music impacts pain. METHODS: If effects are due to attention, performing a challenging

Detailed clinical characteristics of musical hallucinations in 81 patients.

INTRODUCTION: Musical hallucinations are perceptions of music without an external source. Approximately 500 publications on this topic have appeared over the past 35 years. Prior literature has largely consisted of case reports and small series, with only limited systematic studies on the characterisation of mixed pathology, relation to hearing loss, spatial localisation, and multimodal features. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of baseline data from a prospective cohort study of 81 individuals experiencing musical hallucinations. Participants underwent assessment

Quantifying the evolution of harmony and novelty in western classical music.

Music is a complex socio-cultural construct that fascinates researchers across many fields. Understanding its historical development may inform questions of perception and cognition, and offer insight into cultural transmission, creativity, and innovation. Here we study musical features related to harmony and document how they evolved over 400 years in western classical music. We develop a variant of the center of effect algorithm to assign the most likely key to a given set of notes, representing a piece as a sequence of local keys computed bar by bar, and we define information-theoretic meas

Music and speech input in the home environments of Latinx infants.

Infants' experience with the auditory world is culture-specific and shapes how their brains process complex sounds in their environment. The present study is the first to examine naturalistic exposure to speech and music, two main components of infants' auditory soundscapes, in Latinx U.S. infants (n = 64; age range 4-23mo). Through a bootstrapping approach, results are then compared to a previously published dataset of non-Latinx U.S. infants. Two daylong audio recordings per infant were captured with LENA. Using a crowdsourcing approach, 417 naïve listeners annotated a total of 6400 randomly

The bidirectional role of music effect in epilepsy: Friend or foe?

Epilepsy is a prevalent neurological disease that impacts around 70 million individuals globally. Anti-seizure medications (ASMs) are the first choice for clinicians to control unprovoked epileptic seizures. Although more than 30 ASMs are available in the market, patients with epilepsy (PWEs) still show poor responses to adequate drug treatment. Meanwhile, long-term medications not only bring heavy financial burdens but also lead to undesirable side effects. Music, a ubiquitous art form throughout human history, has been confirmed as therapeutically effective in various neurological conditions

Neural mechanisms of musical structure and tonality, and the effect of musicianship.

INTRODUCTION: The neural basis for the processing of musical syntax has previously been examined almost exclusively in classical tonal music, which is characterized by a strictly organized hierarchical structure. Musical syntax may differ in different music genres caused by tonality varieties. METHODS: The present study investigated the neural mechanisms for processing musical syntax across genres varying in tonality - classical, impressionist, and atonal music - and, in addition, examined how musicianship modulates such processing. RESULTS: Results showed that, first, the dorsal stream, inc

Resting-state brain connectivity correlates of musical sophistication.

INTRODUCTION: A growing body of research has investigated how performing arts training, and more specifically, music training, impacts the brain. Recent meta-analytic work has identified multiple brain areas where activity varies as a function of levels of musical expertise gained through music training. However, research has also shown that musical sophistication may be high even without music training. Thus, we aim to extend previous work by investigating whether the functional connectivity of these areas relates to interindividual differences in musical sophistication, and to characterize d

Enhancing the awakening to family engagement bundle with music therapy.

Survivors of prolonged intensive care unit (ICU) admissions may present undesirable long-term outcomes. In particular, physical impairment and cognitive dysfunction have both been described in patients surviving episodes requiring mechanical ventilation and sedation. One of the strategies to prevent the aforementioned outcomes involves the implementation of a bundle composed by: (1) Spontaneous awakening trial; (2) Spontaneous breathing trial; (3) Choosing proper sedation strategies; (4) Delirium detection and management; (5) Early ICU mobility; and (6) Family engagement (ABCDEF bundle). The aversiveness of intrusiveness: Evidence from involuntary musical imagery.

OBJECTIVE: Intrusive thoughts are characterized by a sense of intrusiveness of foreign entry into cognition. While not always consisting of negative content, intrusive thoughts are almost solely investigated in that context. Involuntary Musical Imagery (INMI) offers a promising alternative, as it is a type of involuntary cognition that can be used to evaluate intrusiveness without negative content. METHODS: In Study 1, 200 participants completed self-report questionnaires to assess several aspects of intrusiveness: meta-awareness, control, repetitiveness, frequency, and subjective experience

Music as a unique source of noise-induced hearing loss.

Music is among the most important artistic, cultural, and entertainment modalities in any society. With the proliferation of music genres and the technological advances that allow people to consume music in any location and at any time, music over-exposure has become a significant public health issue. Music-induced hearing loss has a great deal in common with noise-induced hearing loss. However, there are important differences that make music a unique insult to the auditory system and a unique threat to public health. Its unique properties also make it a potentially valuable asset in sound con

"This Won't Hurt a Bit": Is There a Role for Music in Bedside Procedures?

Music has played a long and storied role in clinical healing. However, the integration of music into clinical practice has been slow to gain traction, despite a recent meta-analysis demonstrating association of music interventions with clinically meaningful improvements in health-related quality of life. There is growing evidence that music has an active role in reducing patient pain and anxiety as well as affecting physiologic parameters, such as heart rate and blood pressure, in an ICU setting. Past studies have shown that incorporation of music into procedures in the operating room, radiolo

Music alleviates cognitive impairments in an animal model of autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by core symptoms including impairment in social communication and restrictive and repetitive behaviors and interests. Music has emerged in the past decade as an intervention therapy for children with ASD. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of music on cognition impairments in the valproic acid (VPA) rat model of autism. The VPA was administered for animal modeling of autism on embryonic day 12.5 (E12.5) (600 mg/kg). Male and female pups were sub divided into four main groups (Saline.Non-music, V

Music listening for people living with dementia: a systematic review.

This review aimed at exploring how music listening-based approach can be effective on physiological, cognitive and behavioural aspects, with specific reference to the domain of dementias. Music listening can be considered one of the most common approaches in dementia care, frequently in combination with other non-pharmacological treatments. This type of intervention may allow persons with dementia to work on the organization and regulation of their emotions thanks to the mediation of the sonorous-musical element. Methods. Two independent researchers performed literature search by consulting th

Musical training improves fine motor function in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a sensitive period in motor development but little is known about how long-term learning dependent processes shape hand function in tasks of different complexity. PROCEDURE: We mapped two fundamental aspects of hand function: simple repetitive and complex sequential finger movements, as a function of the length of musical instrumental training. We controlled maturational factors such as chronological and biological age of adolescent female participants (11 to 15 years of age, n = 114). RESULTS: We demonstrated that experience improves performance as a function of t

Decoding Music-Evoked Emotions in the Auditory and Motor Cortex.

Music can induce strong subjective experience of emotions, but it is debated whether these responses engage the same neural circuits as emotions elicited by biologically significant events. We examined the functional neural basis of music-induced emotions in a large sample (n = 102) of subjects who listened to emotionally engaging (happy, sad, fearful, and tender) pieces of instrumental music while their hemodynamic brain activity was measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Ratings of the four categorical emotions and liking were used to predict hemodynamic responses in gen

[Mechanism and research progresses of personalized music in the treatment of tinnitus].

Personalized music has a good application prospect in treating tinnitus. Although scholars at home and abroad have discussed the relevant literature, its mechanism, methods and research progress have not been described in detail. In view of the above situation, this paper introduces several methods of our department in using natural sound to treat tinnitus and shares experience. Hope to provide reference for further research on music therapy for tinnitus in the future.
