The Fort Totten mercury pollution risk assessment: a case history.

Operational activities have resulted in mercury in the sediments surrounding Little Bay in Queens, NY. This is adjacent to Fort Totten, a formerly used defense site. Some of the mercury levels in these sediments exceeded New York State screening values. A human health risk assessment was accomplished, based on conservative assumptions. The risk assessment examined the potential for adverse health effects from direct contact with and ingestion of contaminated sediments/surface water and ingestion of biota. Potential exposures to recreational receptors including adults and children were examined

Determination of the recovery efficiency of cryptosporidium oocysts and giardia cysts from seeded bivalve mollusks.

The intestinal parasites Cryptosporidium and Giardia are transmitted by water and food and cause human gastroenteritis. Filter-feeding bivalve mollusks, such as oysters and mussels, filter large volumes of water and thus concentrate such pathogens, which makes these bivalves potential vectors of disease. To assess the risk of infection from consumption of contaminated bivalves, parasite numbers and parasite recovery data are required. A modified immunomagnetic separation (IMS) procedure was used to determine Cryptosporidium oocyst and Giardia cyst numbers in individually homogenized oysters (C

DNA damage measured by the single-cell gel electrophoresis (Comet) assay in mammals fed with mussels contaminated by the 'Erika' oil-spill.

This research aimed to estimate potential genotoxicity for consumers resulting from the ingestion of seafood contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) released into the marine environment after the 'Erika' shipwreck along the coasts of south Brittany, in France. Mussels (Mytilus sp.) collected from sites on the Atlantic coast that were affected by the oil slick in various degrees, were used to feed rats daily for 2 and 4 weeks. DNA damage was measured by use of the Comet assay in the liver, bone marrow and blood of rats receiving food contaminated with 312 microg of 16PAHs/kg d

Ecotoxicological hazard assessment of nature-inspired synthetic compounds for antifouling applications.

The accumulation of microorganisms and macroorganisms on aquatic surfaces poses economic and ecological challenges, particularly in maritime transport. Traditional antifouling methods, such as biocidal coatings containing toxic compounds like tributyltin (TBT) and copper, are effective but harmful to the environment. This study investigates the ecotoxicological hazards of two nature-inspired compounds (NIAFs), previously investigated for antifouling applications: the polyphenol GBA and the dihydrochalcone DH345, derived from polyphenols and flavonoids, respectively. The ecotoxicity of these co

The risk of thiamine deficiency in common eider ducklings increases when females consume large prey.

Episodic mass mortality due to thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency is a major threat to marine top-consumers worldwide. Recent reports have shown that thiamine deficiency can lead to high mortality rates of common eider (Somateria mollissima) ducklings in the Baltic population. It is unclear whether the drastic reduction in offspring recruitment is linked to the changes in egg thiamine levels. This would have an additional negative impact on the Baltic population of the common eider, which is mainly driven by increased predation pressure. As thiamine concentration decreases with the size of organ

In vitro immunotoxicology of quantum dots and comparison with dissolved cadmium and tellurium.

The increasing use of products derived from nanotechnology has raised concerns about their potential toxicity, especially at the immunocompetence level in organisms. This study compared the immunotoxicity of cadmium sulfate/cadmium telluride (CdS/Cd-Te) mixture quantum dots (QDs) and their dissolved components, cadmium chloride (CdCl2 )/sodium telluride (NaTeO3 ) salts, and a CdCl2 /NaTeO3 mixture on four animal models commonly used in risk assessment studies: one bivalve (Mytilus edulis), one fish (Oncorhynchus mykiss), and two mammals (mice and humans). Our results of viability and phagocyto

TENS stimulates constitutive nitric oxide release via opiate signaling in invertebrate neural tissues.

BACKGROUND: There is a major societal concern relating to the addictive properties of analgesic drugs such as morphine with regard to alleviating pain. Because of this, alternative methods of pain relief are, and have been, actively pursued. An extremely promising method for treatment of low to moderate levels of chronic pain in humans is transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). MATERIAL/METHODS: All experiments utilized the invertebrate marine bivalve mollusc Mytilus edulis pedal ganglia. TENS was achieved using a stimulation apparatus developed by Professor Han of Peking Universi

Environmental factors driving microcystin contamination of estuarine bivalve populations downstream of freshwater cyanobacterial blooms.

Estuaries are dynamic environments that provide vital habitat to ecologically and commercially important bivalves. In some cases, freshwater tributaries can introduce cyanobacteria and associated cyanotoxins into estuaries that may subsequently accumulate in estuarine bivalves. Temporarily open/closed estuaries (TOCEs), which only experience tidal input for limited periods of time, may be particularly vulnerable to the accumulation of cyanotoxins in bivalves as they can be subject to freshwater input without tidal flushing and may experience lower salinities and cyanobacterial blooms. This stu

Foaming at the mouth: Ingestion of floral foam microplastics by aquatic animals.

Phenol-formaldehyde plastics are used globally as floral foam and generate microplastics that can enter the environment. This study is the first to describe how aquatic animals interact with this type of microplastic, and the resultant physiological responses. We analysed "regular foam" microplastics generated from petroleum-derived phenol-formaldehyde plastic, and "biofoam" microplastics generated from plant-derived phenol-formaldehyde plastic. Regular foam and biofoam microplastics showed similar FTIR spectra. Both types of microplastics were consumed by all six invertebrate species tested:

Brominated dioxins (PBDD/Fs) and PBDEs in marine shellfish in the UK.

The occurrence of brominated dioxins (PBDD/Fs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) was investigated in commonly consumed species of marine shellfish in the UK. Individual samples of Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas), native oysters (Ostrea edulis), mussels (Mytilus edulis), scallops (Pecten maximus), and cockles (Cerastoderma edule) were collected from different coastal regions between 2006 and 2007. Samples of a particular species from each site were composited and 60 samples were analysed. Polybrominated dibenzofurans (PBDFs) occurred more frequently and generally at a higher level

Biogeography of ocean acidification: Differential field performance of transplanted mussels to upwelling-driven variation in carbonate chemistry.

Ocean acidification (OA) represents a serious challenge to marine ecosystems. Laboratory studies addressing OA indicate broadly negative effects for marine organisms, particularly those relying on calcification processes. Growing evidence also suggests OA combined with other environmental stressors may be even more deleterious. Scaling these laboratory studies to ecological performance in the field, where environmental heterogeneity may mediate responses, is a critical next step toward understanding OA impacts on natural communities. We leveraged an upwelling-driven pH mosaic along the Califor

Detection of Toxoplasma gondii in wild bivalves from the Kerguelen and Galapagos archipelagos: influence of proximity to cat populations, exposure to marine currents and kelp density.

Oocysts of the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii are found in felid feces and can be washed into coastal waters, where they persist for months, attaching to algae and accumulating in invertebrates. We used wild bivalves to assess contamination of coastal waters of the Kerguelen and Galapagos archipelagos by this zoonotic parasite. Additionally, we leveraged the contrasting situations of these archipelagos to identify some potential drivers of contamination. In the Galapagos, with a cat density reaching 142 per km2, 15.38% of the sampled oysters (Saccostrea palmula) tested positive for T. gondii by q

Replicated anthropogenic hybridisations reveal parallel patterns of admixture in marine mussels.

Human-mediated transport creates secondary contacts between genetically differentiated lineages, bringing new opportunities for gene exchange. When similar introductions occur in different places, they provide informally replicated experiments for studying hybridisation. We here examined 4,279 Mytilus mussels, sampled in Europe and genotyped with 77 ancestry-informative markers. We identified a type of introduced mussels, called "dock mussels," associated with port habitats and displaying a particular genetic signal of admixture between M. edulis and the Mediterranean lineage of M. galloprovin

Chemical composition and ecotoxicity of plastic and car tire rubber leachates to aquatic organisms.

Synthetic polymer-based materials are ubiquitous in aquatic environments, where weathering processes lead to their progressive fragmentation and the leaching of additive chemicals. The current study assessed the chemical content of freshwater and marine leachates produced from car tire rubber (CTR), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polystyrene (PS) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microplastics, and their adverse effects on the microalgae Raphidocelis subcapitata (freshwater) and Skeletonema costatum (marine) and the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. The chronic toxicity of molybdate to marine organisms. I. Generating reliable effects data.

A scientific research program was initiated by the International Molybdenum Association (IMOA) which addressed identified gaps in the environmental toxicity data for the molybdate ion (MoO(4)(2-)). These gaps were previously identified during the preparation of EU-REACH-dossiers for different molybdenum compounds (European Union regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemical substances; EC, 2006). Evaluation of the open literature identified few reliable marine ecotoxicological data that could be used for deriving a Predicted No-Effect Concentration (PNEC) fo

Investigations from Northern Greece on mussels cultivated in areas proximal to wastewaters discharges, as a potential source for human infection with Giardia and Cryptosporidium.

Marine bivalves are usually cultivated in shallow, estuarine waters where there is a high concentration of nutrients. Many micro-pollutants, including the protozoan parasites Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp., which also occur in such environments, may be concentrated in shellfish tissues during their feeding process. Shellfish can thus be considered as vehicles for foodborne infections, as they are usually consumed lightly cooked or raw. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to investigate the presence of both parasites in Mediterranean mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis t

THE PHYSIOLOGICAL BASIS OF NATURAL SELECTION AT THE LAP LOCUS.

An extensive research program was undertaken to evaluate the contribution of genetic variation at the Lap locus to variation in physiological traits under natural conditions. Rates of carbon and nitrogen metabolism were monitored in a population of the mussel Mytilus edulis near the center of the Lap allele frequency cline on the north shore of Long Island. The goal of this research was to establish whether the previously described genotype-dependent differences in physiological phenotype are meaningful in ecologically relevant circumstances. It was predicted from laboratory studies that, in n

First application of a droplet digital PCR to detect Toxoplasma gondii in mussels.

Toxoplasmosis, caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, is one of the main food-, water- and soil-borne zoonotic disease worldwide. Over the past 20 years many papers were published on the transmission of T. gondii by marine animals, including mollusks, which can concentrate the oocysts and release them. Sporulated oocysts may remain viable and infective for 18 months in seawater. Therefore, raw or undercooked bivalve mollusks pose a risk to humans. This study aimed to apply and validate for the first time a very sensitive digital droplet polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) protocol to detect
