Aims of our work were to appraise the quantity and nature of renal calcifications and mineral metabolism in the magnesium-deficient rats; and to find out whether the combination of pyridoxine with Mg L-aspartate or Mg chloride will reduce the length of the treatment needed to recover rats from magnesium deficient condition and urolithiasis state. To induce hypomagnesemia, fifty rats were placed on a magnesium-deficient diet (magnesium content < or = 15 mg/kg) and demineralized water for 10 weeks. On the forty-ninth day of magnesium-deficient diet, rats were treated one of the six supplementati

The prevalence of nephrolithiasis is considerably greater in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) than in the general population. We evaluated anatomic and metabolic factors that may be associated with an increased prevalence of nephrolithiasis in patients with ADPKD. We compared anatomic parameters among ADPKD patients with or without nephrolithiasis as diagnosed by ultrasonography, whereas metabolic factors were determined by 24-hour urinary chemical analysis. Patients with ADPKD and nephrolithiasis had more renal cysts (P < 0.05) and a larger predominant renal

Urinary calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystals and crystal agglomerates are normally harmlessly excreted, but in nephrolithiasis they are retained by tubular epithelial cells and shifted into the renal interstitium. This crystalline material induces an inflammatory response consisting of an increase in the number of interstitial cells and an expansion of the extracellular matrix. The newly arrived cells either derive from the blood or the connective tissue or they are formed by local proliferation. Identification of the cells that surround the interstitial crystals is a first step in investigating th

109 patients with calcium-containing nephrolithiasis and 10 normal controls underwent oral calcium load test. After thorough examination, 6 of the 109 patients were diagnosed as having primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) and the remainder as having normocalcemic nephrolithiasis without PHPT. Following the oral calcium load test, the latter were operationally divided into 3 groups - normocalciuric nephrolithiasis (NN), n = 78; absorptive hypercalciuria (AH), n = 10, and renal hypercalciuria (RH), n = 15 - according to the criteria reported by Pak et al. Before the oral calcium load test, nephrog

INTRODUCTION: The American Urological Association (AUA) provides guidance on primary prevention for nephrolithiasis; however, patient compliance is often poor. The role of healthy literacy in the primary prevention of nephrolithiasis is not well understood. Understanding kidney stone formers' perceptions and knowledge of primary prevention is critical to evaluating their health literacy. This study aimed to assess these perceptions and explore how they relate to counseling intensity and quality of life among patients with nephrolithiasis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional web-based sur

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates nephrolithiasis frequency in Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients compared to general population. Additionally, longitudinally assessing changes in renal CT abnormalities, it seeks to provide radiological evidence for early diagnosis of nephrolithiasis in AS patients.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, 115 patients fulfilling the Modified New York Criteria for AS and 115 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were included. Renal ultrasound and/or CT imaging were carried out to evaluate presence of nephrolithiasis. Participants were categorized into three

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of low-dose (LD) and ultra-low-dose (ULD) computed tomography (CT) scan for stone identification in obese patients compared to conventional-dose CT.
METHODS: A review of patients undergoing CT scans for kidney or ureteral stones at two academic institutions was conducted. Patients with body mass index (BMI) >30 kg/m2 and both a conventional and LD CT within 100 days of each other were included. LD was defined as <4 millisieverts (mSv) and ULD as <1.9 mSv. Renal units with interval treatment or documented stone passage were excluded. CTs were revi

The guideline for primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) recommends surgery for female patients with 24-hour urinary calcium levels >250 mg/day and male patients >300 mg/day, due to their risk for nephrolithiasis. The purpose of this study is to validate this criterion. We analyzed data from 595 patients undergoing surgery for PHPT. We investigated whether high urinary calcium excretion is associated with nephrolithiasis in PHPT patients, along with the presence of other factors. Nephrolithiasis was present in 224 patients and absent in 371. The 24-hour urinary calcium levels did not differ signif

INTRODUCTION: Normocalcemic primary hyperparathyroidism (NPHPT) is thought to be an early form of hypercalcemic primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). However, some studies have shown that the adverse effects on bone and kidney health are similar in both conditions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a nationwide, multicentre, retrospective study. Data from centres, including 404 patients with NPHPT and 723 patients with mild PHPT from different regions of Turkey, were included in this study. All laboratory parameters, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and renal ultrasounds were performed locally at

BACKGROUND: Molecular analysis in patients with nephrolithiasis (NL) and/or nephrocalcinosis (NC) enables more accurate evaluation of underlying etiologies. The existing clinical evidence regarding genetic testing in adults with NL comprises only a few cohort studies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 49 adult patients diagnosed with NL and/or NC from a single center, on whom we performed a genetic test using a nephrolithiasis panel. We reviewed the phenotype of the patients and compared the cases with positive and negative molecular diagnosis.
RESULTS: In total, 49 adult pa

Primary hyperparathyroidism may present with a diagnostic challenge due to its nonspecific initial symptoms, often delaying diagnosis. Nephrolithiasis, a common presentation, is often treated in isolation without consideration of an underlying hyperparathyroidism. It is important for clinicians to consider primary hyperparathyroidism in patients presenting with calcium oxalate kidney stones.

Unhealthy dietary habits play a key role in the pathogenesis of nephrolithiasis (NL). The aims of this case-control study were to evaluate (i) the adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MD) and the dietary salt intake in stone-forming patients (SF), (ii) the relationship occurring between MD adherence, salt intake and NL-related metabolic risk factors in SF, and (iii) the impact of combined high MD adherence and low salt intake on NL susceptibility. From 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2019, we recruited all SF consecutively referred to the Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) center of Fe

BACKGROUND: The use of visual aids to enhance patient learning is becoming increasingly common in medicine. Patients with a better understanding of surgical procedures tend to have better long-term outcomes due to the active seeking of help when complications occur postsurgery. We hypothesized that showing patients an animation of ureteroscopy with instructions on how to address potential complications would increase their understanding of the perioperative nature of ureteroscopy.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Fifty patients were selected between May and August 2019. The group consisted of patients

Introduction and Objective: Guidelines from the American Urological Association (AUA) and American College of Radiology (ACR) recommend that patients with suspected nephrolithiasis undergo low-dose CT of the kidney, ureter, and bladder (LD CT KUB) as opposed to higher dose conventional imaging. We hypothesized that even at institutions with established LD protocols, higher dose imaging is common. Materials and Methods: We identified four academic medical centers where LD CT KUB protocols were implemented to yield an effective dose (EDose) consistent with national guidelines. Fifty consecutive

PURPOSE: The major short coming of conventional therapy system is that they can't deliver the therapeutics specifically to a site within the body without producing nonspecific toxicity. Present research aimed at developing kidney targeted allopurinol (AP) loaded chitosan coated magnetic nanoparticles (A-MNPs) for the management of hyperuricemic nephropathy manifested in the form of nephrolithiasis.
METHODS: The work includes preparation of magnetic nanoparticles by chemical co-precipitation method and evaluation of the prepared batches for particle size analysis, Transmission electron microsc

Numerous epidemiological studies have shown that male patients with uric acid nephrolithiasis outnumber female patients. To our knowledge, no research exists evaluating the reasons gender affects the development of uric acid nephrolithiasis. We hereby used a novel application of structural equation modeling to analyze the mediators of the effects of gender on uric acid nephrolithiasis. In 1,098 patients with nephrolithiasis between 2012 and 2016, male gender was found to have a statistically significant positive indirect effect on the development of uric acid nephrolithiasis, which was mediate

BACKGROUND: Urolithiasis is a significant healthcare issue but the pathophysiology of stone disease remains poorly understood. Drosophila Malpighian tubules were known to share similar physiological function to human renal tubules. We have used Drosophila as a genetic model to study the transcriptional response to stone formation secondary to dietary manipulation.
METHODS: Wild-type male flies were raised on standard medium supplemented with lithogenic agents: control, sodium oxalate (NaOx) and ethylene glycol (EG). At 2 weeks, Malpighian tubules were dissected under polarized microscope to v

RELEVANCE: Urinary tract infection (UTI) are a risk factor for diseases leading to impairment of renal function and kidney stone disease (KSD). Growing resistance of uropathogens to antibacterial agents is a challenging issue in most countries of the world. Urolithiasis is the second most prevalent urologic condition following urinary tract infections and has a pronounced tendency to recur. Rational stone metaphylaxis leads to a significant reduction in the incidence of recurrent stones. In recent decades, there has been a markedly increasing interest in plant-based therapies in managing urolo
