A 63-year-old Japanese man complained of lower back pain and numbness and was diagnosed as intradural tumors at the T11/12 and L1 level. The thoracic tumor originated from the posterior nerve root, and the lumbar tumor originated from the cauda equina. Five months after surgical resection, the patient developed recurrent tumor consisting of enlargement of multiple caudal nerves. A series of glutathione (GSH)-capped aqueous CdS quantum dots (QDs) with strong photoluminescence (PL) were prepared by changing the reaction temperatures and times on the basis of optimization of the mole ratio of S to Cd. In the study, we employ an affordable, tissue-saving, and precise simultaneous multiplex immunofluorescence method with heat-induced antibody stripping to identify and structurally analyse nigral Lewy bodies in dopaminergic neurones. Analysis of different alpha-synuclein epitopes and proteoforms reveals an almost uniform, onion-like morphology of the Lewy bodies. The N-terminal and C-terminal domains are predominantly accessible to antibody binding in the peripheral shell of the bodies.

Epidermoid cysts, though having a variable sonographic appearance, may present with an onion peel configuration, that is, concentric rings of alternating hyperechogenicities and hypoechogenicities. The absence of vascular flow on colour Doppler sonography is also consistent with the avascular nature of these lesions. By combining these two sonographic features and the absence of biochemical tumour marker, preoperative diagnosis of epidermoid cyst is possible and may prompt a testis sparing surgery rather than orchidectomy.

Lipoid proteinosis was diagnosed in two daughters of a consanguinous marriage on the basis of genetic, clinical, light microscopic and ultrastructural findings. Hyaline material accumulation, thickening of the basal laminae and the resulting typical onion skin phenomenon were observed. In addition to the pathognomonic cutaneous mucosal findings, unusual manifestations such as persistence of deciduous teeth (in one case), oligodontia and intracerebral calcifications were observed. A 14 year old boy with scapuloperoneal muscular atrophy, pes cavus, areflexia and distal sensory loss (Davidenkow syndrome) is described. Nerve conduction velocities were diminished. Sural nerve biopsy demonstrated a reduction in the number of myelinated fibers and early "onion-bulb" formation. These observations support the hypothesis that the scapuloperoneal amyotrophy associated with distal sensory loss may represent a variant of type I hereditary motor sensory neuropathy.

Ultrastructural analysis was performed in cardiac ceroidlipofuscinosis to confirm the presence and the nature of storage material. Granular osmophilic deposits characteristic of GROD structures coincidented with particularly aberrant mitochondria. Remodeling of mitochondrial interior with the appearance of several form of abnormal inclusions was never observed in cardiac ceroidlipofuscinosis. The presence of dense osmophilic bodies, glycogen conglomerates, balloon-like and onion-like structures in mitochondrial interior seem to be early events of this storage process.

Effects of volatile odors from leek, Allium porum L., on the behavior of bean fly, Ophiomyia phaseoli (Tryon) (Diptera: Agromyzidae), were tested in laboratory olfactometer bioassays. The presence of well-known atmospheric pollutants is regularly screened for in large towns but knowledge about the effects of mixtures of different pollutants and especially their genotoxic potential is largely missing. Post-mortem examination of case I of Roussy and Lévy's original family shows an extensive Schwann cell proliferation with some onion bulb formations. This confirms that this family is suffering from a form of hypertrophic neuropathy. The author reaffirms his concept of Roussy-Lévy syndrome as an autonomous hypertrophic neuropathy. The following criteria seem to justify the autonomy of this syndrome: dominant transmission, very precocious onset, extreme slowness of the evolution, and remarkable benignity of the general prognosis.

We report on 2 patients with multifocal motor neuropathy with focal conduction block involving motor but not sensory fibers at the site of nerve swelling. A nerve biopsy specimen from adjacent to the enlargement in 1 patient showed a perivascular area containing scattered demyelinated axons surrounded by small onion bulbs. The observed pathological findings are consistent with the conduction block considered characteristic of this neuropathy, although the underlying immunological mechanisms for selectivity and persistence remain undetermined.

This report describes a case of stable mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) with development of acute scleroderma with hypertension, oliguric renal failure, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, and pulmonary infiltrates.
