Long-Term Stability and Safety of Orthognathic-Orthodontic Correction for Skeletal Anterior Open Bite: A Systematic Review and Evidence Appraisal.

This systematic review evaluated the long-term stability and complication profile of combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgical treatment for managing skeletal anterior open-bite (AOB) in adolescents and adults. An electronic search of PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar identified English-language clinical studies (published from January 2004 to September 2025) that included at least one group treated with combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgical correction. Nonsurgical comparators such as skeletal-anchorage-based intrusion or orthodontic camouflage were also included w

Development of animal model for anterior open bite and mechanism of temporomandibular joint morphological change: an implication for MAC surgery.

BACKGROUND: Although mandibular autorotation concept (MAC) surgery is a novel technique for addressing long-term stability issues in patients with mandibular retrusion and open bite accompanied by temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA), studies on MAC surgery in animal models and its mechanisms are scarce. This study aimed to develop an animal model for anterior open bite and investigate the underlying histological and molecular mechanisms of TMJ changes, with the expectation of contributing to the MAC surgery concept. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six, 5-weeks-old female Wistar rats

Intermaxillary elastics on skeletal anchorage and MARPE to treat a class III maxillary retrognathic open bite adolescent: A case report.

Class III malocclusion when accompanied with transverse and vertical maxillomandibular discrepancies such as posterior crossbite and vertical open bite leads to complicated orthodontic treatment. Proper diagnosis and treatment planning are important in such patients for a successful orthodontic outcome. A common treatment approach for patients with class III malocclusion is to wait for the completion of growth and plan orthognathic surgery in conjunction with orthodontic treatment. However, performing no treatment and waiting for growth to be completed during teen years could lead to negative

Camouflage of a high-angle skeletal Class II open-bite malocclusion in an adult after mini-implant failure during treatment.

The treatment of skeletal anterior open-bite malocclusion requires complex orthodontic planning that considers its multifactorial etiology, treatment limitations, and high relapse rates. This case report illustrates a successful treatment approach for a skeletal high-angle Class II malocclusion in an adult with a severe open bite. The treatment consisted of a high-pull headgear therapy after mini-implants failure during fixed orthodontic therapy. Adequate esthetics and function were achieved. Despite its low probability, the unexpected event of mini-implant loosening during complex treatments

The short-term skeleto-dental effects of a new spring for the intrusion of maxillary posterior teeth in open bite patients.

BACKGROUND: The technology surrounding temporary skeletal anchorage devices has improved in leaps and bounds. However, no specific auxiliary exists for the intrusion of molars in conjunction with these devices and currently clinicians are forced to make do with available force delivery materials. A new intrusion auxiliary, the Sydney Intrusion Spring (SIS), was designed to facilitate intrusion without frequent need for reactivation or tissue irritation. METHODS: The subjects consisted of 16 adolescent patients (12 females and 4 males) with an average age of 13.1 years (range 12.2 to 14.3 year

Comparative Evaluation of Fixed Versus Removable Tongue-Thrust Habit-Breaking Appliances in the Management of Anterior Open Bite in Pediatric Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior open bite associated with tongue-thrusting habit is a common malocclusion in children that may adversely affect dentofacial development, oral function, and esthetics. Habit-breaking appliances are frequently used to eliminate tongue-thrusting behavior and facilitate the correction of anterior open bites. However, limited evidence exists regarding the comparative effectiveness of fixed and removable tongue-thrust habit-breaking appliances. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of fixed and removable tongue-thrust habit-breaking appliances in managing anterior open

A novel technique to improve postoperative stability of orthognathic surgical anterior open bite correction using temporary anchorage devices: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative stability is a significant problem in the orthognathic management of anterior open bite malocclusion. The general tendency of modern preadjusted fixed appliances is towards unwanted and unplanned extrusion of the maxillary incisor and canine teeth as the dental arch is levelling. Following surgical repositioning of the jaws, the relapse potential of the extruded anterior dentition will be to intrude, leading to some reopening of the surgically corrected anterior open bite. CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old male white Caucasian patient presented with a clinically signi
