Intraorbital polyacrylamide gel injection for the treatment of anophthalmic enophthalmos.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the use of orbital polyacrylamide gel injection for the correction of anophthalmic enophthalmos. METHODS: Noncontrolled clinical trial of 21 patients (14 with ocular implants, 5 with phthisis bulbi, and 2 with dermis-fat graft). Orbital CT was performed to estimate the volume of polyacrylamide gel needed to restore orbital volume. Polyacrylamide gel was injected using a 22-gauge (30 x 0.7 mm) needle transcutaneously inserted in the lateral third of the lower eyelid, directed to the orbital muscle cone. A second injection was administered 15 days later, if necessary. CT wa

Classification of orbital exenteration and reconstruction.

Orbital exenteration (OE) is considered to be a mutilating surgical procedure reserved for relentlessly progressive neoplastic disorders or extensive facial trauma with unfavourable eye involvement. Malignant tumours, accounting for the majority of ablative orbital surgeries, may be caused by primary orbital tumours or secondarily by neoplasias from the surrounding skin, the maxillary sinus or intracranial malignomas. Orbital exenteration following trauma is mostly caused by penetrating globe defects or extended infections with the danger of intracranial effects. Thoughtful resection planning,

Escherichia coli Panophthalmitis after Pecking by a Great Egret (Ardea alba).

We report a case of open globe injury caused by Ardea albapecking that resulted in Escherichia colipanophthalmitis. A woman in her 70s complaining of ocular pain was referred to our hospital because her right eye had been pecked by an A. alba2 days earlier. Visual acuity in her right eye was reduced to light sensation. The right conjunctiva became hyperemic and edematous with swelling of the right upper eyelid. The upper side of the right cornea was densely cloudy with focal defect. Ultrasonography showed a thick sclera and choroid-like structure. Pathological investigation of a scraped sample

Spontaneous Expulsive Suprachoroidal Hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous Expulsive Suprachoroidal Hemorrhage (SESCH) is an extremely rare phenomenon that leads to atraumatic spontaneous globe rupture. Only a handful of SESCH cases have been reported worldwide, primarily in developing countries. Risk factors associated with SESCH include uncontrolled hypertension, previous eye surgery, glaucoma, atherosclerosis, advanced age, and corneal damage. CASE REPORT: We report a case of expulsive suprachoroidal hemorrhage in a ninety-seven-year-old female. The patient presented to the emergency department with painful bleeding from her right eye. Iron overload is a risk factor for zygomycosis.

Well-recognized risk factors for zygomycosis include diabetic ketoacidosis, immunocompromise, and deferoxamine therapy for iron or aluminum overload, usually in patients undergoing kidney dialysis. We report a case of fatal nasal-orbital-cerebral zygomycosis in an 82-year-old man with known myelodysplasia and well-controlled diabetes. He was not receiving deferoxamine. Despite radical surgery and amphotericin B therapy, he died; primary hemochromatosis with gross iron overload was found post mortem. Experimental evidence suggests iron overload without deferoxamine therapy may be a risk factor

The application of an acellular dermal allograft (AlloDerm) for patients with insufficient conjunctiva during evisceration and implantation surgery.

PurposeTo describe the use of an acellular dermal allograft (AlloDerm) for patients with insufficient conjunctiva during evisceration and implantation surgery.Patients and methodsThe medical records of six patients with insufficient conjunctiva during evisceration surgery were reviewed. It was not possible to close the Tenon's capsule and conjunctiva without wound tension in these patients, so AlloDerm was placed over the sclera, and the edges were sutured with adjacent conjunctiva without tension. The size of the bare AlloDerm graft was measured in all patients. The clinical outcome was the i

A modified technique for retention of orbital prosthesis.

An orbital defect (congenital or acquired) causes severe facial asymmetry and disfigurement, which results in psychological and social disturbances to the patient. It becomes a challenging task for a maxillofacial prosthodontist to fabricate a prosthesis that replicates the healthy side of the face. Success of the prosthesis depends primarily on satisfactory retention of the same. This clinical report illustrates rehabilitation of a patient with an orbital defect by fabricating a hollow orbital prosthesis, utilizing anatomical undercuts for retention using an acrylic resin template relined by

Computed Tomography Study of the Mummy of King Seqenenre Taa II: New Insights Into His Violent Death.

Seqenenre-Taa-II, The Brave, (c.1558-1553 BC) ruled Southern Egypt during the occupation of Egypt by the Hyksos. The mummy was physically examined and X-rayed in the 1960s, which showed severe head wounds that have prompted various theories about the circumstances of his death. We postulated that Computed Tomography (CT) study of Seqenenre-Taa-II's mummy would give insights into the circumstances of his death. We examined Seqenenre's mummy using CT and compared the findings with the archaeological literature as well as with five Asian weapons found in Tell-el-Dabaa. CT findings indicate that S
