The collecting duct (CD) is the final segment of the kidney involved in the fine regulation of osmotic and ionic balance. During dehydration, arginine vasopressin (AVP) stimulates the expression and trafficking of aquaporin 2 (AQP2) to the apical membrane of CD principal cells, thereby allowing water reabsorption from the primary urine. Conversely, when the secretion of AVP is lowered, as for instance upon water ingestion or as a consequence of diabetes insipidus, the CD remains water impermeable leading to enhanced diuresis and urine dilution. In addition, an AVP-independent mechanism of urin

The conventional prolactin (PRL), also known as PRL1, is an adenohypophysial hormone that critically regulates various physiological events in reproduction, metabolism, growth, osmoregulation, among others. PRL1 shares its evolutionary origin with PRL2, growth hormone (GH), somatolactin and placental lactogen, which together form the GH/PRL hormone family. Previously, several bioassays implied the existence of PRL1 in elasmobranch pituitaries. However, to date, all attempts to isolate PRL1 from chondrichthyans have been unsuccessful. Here, we cloned PRL1 from the pituitary of the holocephalan

BACKGROUND: The Florida manatee, Trichechus manatus latirostris (Sirenia: Trichechidae), is the largest herbivorous marine mammal. Previously, components of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of the species have been described, but no comprehensive descriptions of the gross and microscopic anatomy existed. This study integrates function and structure of the entire Florida manatee GI tract.
METHODS: The GI tracts of several recently dead Florida manatees were examined from the following viewpoints: gross anatomical studies of preserved and unpreserved specimens, histology and histochemistry, and

A 54-year-old schizophrenic patient who presented with hyponatremia and nephrotic-range proteinuria was subsequently discovered to have a gastric adenocarcinoma. Psychogenic water drinking, sodium depletion, and cardiac, adrenal, hepatic, and thyroid disease were excluded as causes of hyponatremia. The serum creatinine concentration was normal, and, although renal biopsy showed changes consistent with immune complex glomerulopathy, proteinuria remitted without treatment. Moderately severe hyponatremia persisted, and the diagnosis of gastric adenocarcinoma was made after the onset of early sati

Arginine vasopressin (AVP) is a pleiotropic neuroendocrine hormone with diverse physiological functions that have important implications for immune regulation. Although AVP has been reported to exert both immunostimulating and immunosuppressive effects, its actions on immune function are highly context-dependent and arise largely from its established roles in stress physiology, vascular regulation, osmoregulation, and thermoregulation. AVP influences immune activity indirectly through modulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, blood flow, vascular and lymphatic permeability,

Leishmania parasites cause a spectrum of diseases known as leishmaniases and must acquire nutrients like iron while surviving host defenses. Aquaglyceroporin 1 (AQP1) is a membrane channel that, in L. major, localizes to the flagellum and mediates antimony uptake and cell-volume regulation. Here, we show that in L. amazonensis AQP1 is instead targeted to glycosomes and that its expression is modulated by iron availability. A CRISPR-Cas9-mediated knockout of AQP1 in L. amazonensis revealed its multifunctional importance. AQP1-null promastigotes displayed a significant growth defect, particularl

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This narrative review aims to synthesize evidence regarding plasma taurine concentrations in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), explore the underlying mechanisms involved and evaluate the therapeutic potential of taurine as an adjuvant treatment. Finally, it highlights key knowledge gaps and perspectives for future clinical research. Taurine, a sulfur-containing amino acid, exhibits notable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It plays essential roles in glucose homeostasis, osmoregulation, mitochondrial protection, and the neutralization of reactive

Over the course of an approximately 11-month period, an outdoor, freshwater, mixed species, recirculating, display system at a public aquarium experienced intermittent mortalities of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) and blue catfish (I. furcatus). Catfish acutely presented for abnormal buoyancy, coelomic distention, and protein-rich coelomic effusion. Gross lesions typically involved massive coelomic distension with protein-rich effusion, generalized edema, and gastric hemorrhage and edema. Microscopically, primary lesions included renal tubular necrosis, gastric edema with mucosal hemorr

Transient receptor potential (TRP) channels are a widely expressed family of 28 evolutionarily conserved cationic ion channels that operate as primary detectors of chemical and physical stimuli and secondary effectors of metabotropic and ionotropic receptors. In vertebrates, the channels are grouped into six related families: TRPC, TRPV, TRPM, TRPA, TRPML, and TRPP. As sensory transducers, TRP channels are ubiquitously expressed across the body and the CNS, mediating critical functions in mechanosensation, nociception, chemosensing, thermosensing, and phototransduction. This article surveys cu

Increased salinity is an emerging contaminant of concern for aquatic taxa. For amphibians exposed to salinity, there is scarce information about the physiological effects and changes in osmoregulatory hormones such as corticosterone (CORT) and aldosterone (ALDO). Recent studies have quantified effects of salinity on CORT physiology of amphibians based on waterborne hormone collection methods, but much less is known about ALDO in iono- and osmoregulation of amphibians. We re-assayed waterborne hormone samples from a previous study to investigate effects of salinity (sodium chloride, NaCl) and a

The involvement of secretin (SCT) and its receptor (SCTR) in angiotensin II (ANGII)-mediated osmoregulation by forming SCTR/ angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) heteromer is well established. In this study, we demonstrated that SCTR/AT1R complex can mediate ANGII-induced aldosterone secretion/release through potentiating calcium mobilization. Through IHC and cAMP studies, we showed the presence of functional SCTR and AT1R in the primary zona glomerulosa (ZG) cells of C57BL/6N (C57), and functional AT1R and non-functional SCTR in SCTR knockout (SCTR-/-) mice. Calcium mobilization studies reve

Invasive parasites have been implicated in the declines of several freshwater species. The swim bladder nematode Anguillicola crassus was introduced into Europe in the 1980s and is considered a threat to the European eel (Anguilla anguilla). Infection affects stress resistance and swimming behaviour. European eels produce an immune response against the parasite during the late stages of infection and after repeated infections. We used RNA-seq to examine the molecular response to infection during the poorly understood early stage and identify expression of genes and associated processes that ar

CONTEXT: Psychogenic adipsic hypernatremia is an exceedingly rare and life-threatening condition, occurring in those with severe psychiatric disorders. Its diagnosis requires exclusion of congenital or acquired hypothalamic pathologic entities. We present the case of a patient who experienced transient severe hypernatremia without evidence of brain pathologic features or known psychiatric disease. In our patient, the transient adipsic hypernatremia had resulted from an episode of mild depression that resolved spontaneously.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 46-year-old healthy woman who had had three recur

Arginine vasopressin (AVP), which induces vasoconstriction and conserves solute-free water when released during high plasma osmolality, is secreted through 2 mechanisms: osmoregulation and baroregulation. This study aims to clarify the mechanisms and influencing factors for non-osmotic AVP secretion in adult patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). AVP levels were measured in 74 adults with CHD. Non-osmotic AVP secretion was defined as excessive AVP secretion relative to the AVP level inferred from plasma osmolality. Accordingly, 10 patients (13.5%) demonstrated non-osmotic AVP secretion,

Nicotine can cause oxidative damage to organisms; however, some bacteria, for example Pseudomonas sp. HF-1, are resistant to such oxidative stress. In the present study, we analyzed the concentration-dependent metabolic response of Pseudomonas sp. HF-1 to nicotine stress using ¹H NMR spectroscopy coupled with multivariate data analysis. We found that the dominant metabolites in Pseudomonas sp. HF-1 were eight aliphatic organic acids, six amino acids, three sugars and 11 nucleotides. After 18 h of cultivation, 1 g/L nicotine caused significant elevation of sugar (glucose, trehalose and maltose)

Systemic carbonic anhydrase (CA) inhibitors are among the most powerful agents to lower intraocular pressure. Unfortunately, their use is frequently accompanied by undesired side effects. Some are due to the relatively large amounts of drug that have to be systematically administered to inhibit the CA in the ciliary processes. The aim of the present work was to study in vitro effects of some pesticides on CA enzyme obtained from blood of fish, which play a key role in salt- and osmoregulation and acid-base balance in the fish, Oncorhynchus mykiss and Cyprinus carpio carpio living in freshwater

Prolactin (PL) is a mammotropic neuropeptide produced by the pituitary and extrapituitary cells existing as several isoforms and belongs to the growth and lactogenic hormone family, which includes growth hormone and placental lactogens. The secretion of pituitary PL is under hypothalamic control. The cytokines IL-1, IL-2, and IL-6 also stimulate production, while IFN-gamma and endothelin-3 are inhibitory. PL exerts its effects via PL receptors (PLr) which exist as three isoforms. PL regulates reproduction, osmoregulation, and behavior and has potent immunomodulatory effects. PL is structurally

1. We have studied the response of six patients with cranial diabetes insipidus and six age-matched control subjects to dietary sodium restriction during constant administration of the synthetic vasopressin analogue desamino-[8-D-arginine]vasopressin. 2. Urine flow increased on the first low salt day in the normal control subjects but not in the patients with cranial diabetes insipidus. Body weight fell 1.35 kg in the control subjects but was constant in the patients with cranial diabetes insipidus. 3. Urinary sodium excretion fell at the same rate in both groups. Diurnal variation of urinary

The Malpighian tubules are well-known and studied as the principal excretory organs in most insects. They play a key role in the production of primary urine and osmoregulation. It works with the rectum while regulating the water and salt balance in the body. The distal ends of the tubules are found in contact with the wall of the rectum in insects that feed on dry substances or live in a nearly dry environment and therefore, need to retain water: that is an arrangement known as a cryptonephric system. In this study, Cassida palaestina Reiche, 1858 is a beetle species belonging to the order Col

The saccus vasculosus (SV) is a specialized periventricular organ found in some species of teleost and elasmobranch fishes, located at the back of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. However, its function remains incompletely understood. In this study, histological, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and transcriptomic analyses were employed to investigate the SV of the mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi) to gain insights into its morphology, gene expression profile and function. Through histological staining techniques, different cell types within the SV can be identified and characterize
