Mesenteric Panniculitis (MP) in CT - A Predictor of Malignancy?

PURPOSE: The exact etiology of mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is still unknown and has been discussed in relation to different causes. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate a coherence between MP and malignancy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of consecutive CT abdomen examinations of 5595 patients in terms of MP over a period of 3 years was performed. To make the diagnosis of MP, three of five typical signs were obligatory: hyperdense mass lesion with intercalated nodules, a "fat-ring sign" or halo sign, a hyperdense pseudocapsule and displacement of bowel loops. [Minimally invasive technologies in diagnosis and treatment of local purulent complications of destructive pancreatitis].

Sixty patients with local purulent complications of destructive pancreatitis were treated. Interventional procedures under visual control were performed in 38 patients: in 26 (68.4%) -- under control of computed tomography and in 12 (31.6%) -- ultrasound-assisted procedures. Traditional surgeries were performed in 22 patients. Complete recovery was seen in 23 (60,6%) of 38 patients of the first group, all these patients have solitary, one-chamber and non-sequestered purulent cavities which are formed in 82.6% cases due to microfocal pancreonecrosis. Transcutaneous drainage was ineffective in 1

An Overlooked Potentially Treatable Disorder: Idiopathic Mesenteric Panniculitis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of mesenteric panniculitis (MP) and to describe its clinical characteristics, therapy, and outcome. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was carried out among patients with MP based on computed tomography (CT) scans from January 2012 to December 2015. The CT images were reanalyzed by study radiologists to confirm the previous MP diagnosis. Patients were divided into 2 groups, i.e., idiopathic and secondary, based on the presence or absence of associated predisposing factors such as trauma, malignancy, autoimmune disord

Detection of MDM2 gene amplification or protein expression distinguishes sclerosing mesenteritis and retroperitoneal fibrosis from inflammatory well-differentiated liposarcoma.

Inflammatory liposarcoma is a variant of well-differentiated liposarcoma/atypical lipomatous tumor that consists of a mixture of lymphocytes, histiocytes, scattered atypical stromal cells, mature adipocytes, and rarely lipoblasts. When the inflammatory infiltrate predominates, the morphological features overlap with various fibroinflammatory disorders including sclerosing mesenteritis and retroperitoneal fibrosis, making the diagnosis difficult. Well-differentiated liposarcoma/atypical lipomatous tumor and dedifferentiated liposarcoma have characteristic molecular markers in the form of giant

"Medically necessary" panniculectomy to facilitate gynecologic cancer surgery in morbidly obese patients.

A retrospective review of patients in our practice who underwent abdominal panniculectomy to facilitate gynecologic cancer surgery was performed. The objective of the study was to determine if panniculectomy was a safe and useful procedure in the morbidly obese gynecologic cancer patient. A total of 12 patients underwent the procedure between 1992 and 1996. Optimal pelvic oncologic surgery was accomplished in all 12 patients. All aspects of those procedures were performed by gynecologic oncologists. The Buchwalter retractor was used in all cases. The patients' weights ranged from 170 to 429 po

Sclerosing mesenteritis as a cause of porto-mesenteric vascular obstruction.

A woman in her 20s presented with haematemesis, post-prandial abdominal pain, weight loss and anaemia. Imaging revealed a non-enhancing mass in the retroperitoneal space along the mesenteric plane, encasing the porto-mesenteric vasculature. Endoscopy showed oesophageal varices. She was diagnosed with sclerosing mesenteritis, causing extrinsic compression of the portal vein and superior mesenteric artery. She underwent endoscopic variceal ligation and received prednisolone and tamoxifen. After 3 months, her post-prandial pain improved, and she did not have further bleeding episodes.

Increased levels of prostaglandin E-major urinary metabolite (PGE-MUM) in active mesenteric panniculitis patients: A case report.

RATIONALE: Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is a rare disease with abdominal and systemic symptoms and is characterized by nonspecific inflammation, fat necrosis, and fibrosis in mesenteric fat. Active inflammatory responses may increase levels of prostaglandin E-major urinary metabolite (PGE-MUM), which was reported to reflect the disease activity of ulcerative colitis and chronic fibrosing interstitial pneumonia. We recently experienced a case with elevated PGE-MUM at the time of diagnosis of MP and we investigated the potential of PGE-MUM as a biomarker. PATIENT CONCERN: In this report we desc

Cohort study of mesenteric panniculitis and its relationship to malignancy.

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is a rare condition that historically has been associated with the presence of malignancy. Paraneoplastic phenomena in general regress with cure and in most cases with treatment of the cancer. This study was undertaken to determine whether MP regressed with cancer treatment and cure. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of a database of all patients with MP confirmed on CT between 2003 and August 2015 at Christchurch Hospital. Patients were categorized as having malignant or non-malignant disease, and follow-up scans were assessed for remission of

[Inusual presentation of mesenteric panniculitis].

Mesenteric Panniculitis is an inflammatory process, not tumoral, of the adipose tissue of the mesentery. There are documented several ways of clinical presentation, from asymptomatic until abdominal pain, affectation of general condition and loose weight. Exceptionally it is declared like only fever. Several treatments have been used, including colchicine, dapsone or corticosteroids associated or not with inmunosupresants, but there are no prospective controlled studies to define appropriate treatment; moreover, there are cases of regresion without specific therapy. Below we present the case o

Association between mesenteric panniculitis and urolithiasis.

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare condition and refers to benign and nonspecific inflammation of mesenteric fat. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the hypothesis of a greater prevalence of mesenteric panniculitis in patients with urolithiasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, abdominopelvic CT scans of 500 patients were reviewed for the presence of urolithiasis and mesenteric panniculitis. The inclusion criteria were patients who were referred with acute abdominal pain and were suspected of having urolithiasis or other urinary conditions and who had un

Relationship of mesenteric panniculitis with visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is an idiopathic benign disease characterized by fat necrosis, chronic inflammation, and fibrosis. The relationship between obesity and chronic low-grade inflammation has been reported. This study investigated the relationship of MP diagnosed using multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) with visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) areas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 104 patients with no radiological findings other than MP. Additionally, 76 individuals without any indicative radiological findings w

Mesenteric panniculitis. Part 2: prevalence and natural course: MDCT prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is an uncommon benign inflammatory condition of unknown etiology that involves the adipose tissue of the mesentery. I can be evaluated as a single disease with two pathological subgroups: MP, representing the very large majoritary subgroup where inflammation and fat necrosis predominate and Retractile Mesenteritis, rarely found, where fibrosis and retraction predominate. OBJECTIVE: To re-estimate the prevalence of MP in general population through a large prospective study, to compare the results with those of the literature and to evaluate the natural

Fatal complications associated with caesarean section in the bitch: post-mortem investigation of 17 cases.

This case series describes the post-mortem findings in 17 bitches (Canis lupus familiaris) with a recent (<7 days) history of caesarean section, most (94%) of which had undergone conservative caesarean section with preservation of the uterus. Brachycephalic breeds accounted for 71% of all cases, with the French Bulldog (35%, n = 6), English Bulldog (18%, n = 3) and Boston Terrier (12%, n = 2) overrepresented. Eleven animals (65%) died between 4 and 48 h after surgery, whereas six (35%) died during the procedure. The most common cause of death was septicaemia (41%, n = 7) associated with Strept
