A field demonstration of the simulation optimization approach for remediation system design.

While significant progress has been made in the theoretical development of the simulation/optimization (S/O) approach for ground water remediation design, its application to large, field-scale problems has remained limited. To demonstrate the applicability and usefulness of the S/O approach under real field conditions, an optimization demonstration project was conducted at the Massachusetts Military Reservation in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, involving the design of a pump-and-treat system for the containment and cleanup of a large trichloroethylene (TCE) plume. The optimization techniques used in

YOLOv11-Lite architecture for wildlife detection from drone images.

INTRODUCTION: Drones equipped with cameras are helpful in wildlife tracking. Deep learning has great potential for detecting wildlife, but is constrained by the challenge of detecting tiny objects, especially from higher altitudes. METHODS: These limitations are addressed by an enhanced You Only Look Once 11 (YOLOv11-Lite) model. YOLOv11-Lite is a lightweight, edge-friendly variant of YOLOv11 that reduces computational complexity while maintaining high detection accuracy. Standard Convolution + Batch Normalization + SiLU (CBS) blocks are replaced with Depthwise-CBS units, which reduce the num

An innovative Squid Game Optimizer for enhanced channel estimation and massive MIMO detection using dilated adaptive RNNs.

The Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system can provide improved spectral efficiency and energy performance. However, the computational demand faced by conventional signal recognition techniques has significantly increased due to the growing number of antennas and higher-order modulations. To overcome these challenges, deep learning approaches are adopted as they offer versatility, nonlinear modelling capabilities, and parallel computation efficiency for large-scale MIMO detection. Therefore, a deep network for channel estimation and massive MIMO detection is developed to reduce computati

Limited column formation in the embryonic growth plate implies divergent growth mechanisms during pre- and postnatal bone development.

Chondrocyte columns, which are a hallmark of growth plate architecture, play a central role in bone elongation. Columns are formed by clonal expansion following rotation of the division plane, resulting in a stack of cells oriented parallel to the growth direction. In this work, we analyzed hundreds of Confetti multicolor clones in growth plates of mouse embryos using a pipeline comprising 3D imaging and algorithms for morphometric analysis. Surprisingly, analysis of the elevation angles between neighboring pairs of cells revealed that most cells did not display the typical stacking pattern as

Accelerated discovery of highly active enzyme nanohybrids with parallelized Bayesian optimization in hybrid space.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has significantly advanced protein engineering, enabling rapid enzyme evolution for diverse applications. However, the fragile nature of biomacromolecules requires enzyme immobilization to preserve catalytic activity under harsh industrial conditions, which often restricts substrate diffusion and reduces enzymatic activity. This challenge demands extensive trial-and-error experiments to optimize immobilized carriers with high activity for different enzymes. Here we show a machine-learning-guided workflow along with an algorithm named parallelized hybrid-space Bayes

Imaging-Based Parallel Seismic Test for In-Service Bridge Pile Foundations.

The conventional parallel seismic test (PST) is a widely used and highly reliable method for determining lengths of in-service bridge pile foundations. However, it relies solely on the manual interpretation of first-arrival in seismic records and often fails to detect, characterize, or geometrically define internal defects within the piles. To overcome these limitations and enable the intuitive identification of internal defects and damage within piles, this study introduces an elastic reverse time migration (ERTM) imaging algorithm based on the spectral element method, achieving high-resoluti

Redefining the diagnostic pathway for pulmonary nocardiosis: The imperative for early metagenomic sequencing.

In this article, we comment on the pivotal article by Wang et al. We focus on the critical intersection of advanced imaging and molecular diagnostics highlighted by their findings. The study delineates specific high-risk computed tomography patterns, notably consolidation with nodules/cavities, particularly in immunocompromised hosts or patients with bronchiectasis, that should serve as immediate red flags for pulmonary nocardiosis. Traditionally, diagnosis has relied on slow-growing cultures, leading to dangerous therapeutic delays. This editorial argues that the presence of these defined rad

Cross-platform comparison of gene expression-based cancer molecular subtyping reveals discrepancies with exome capture methods.

Gene expression profiling in precision oncology is increasing with uncertain validity across platforms. In this study, we examined the application of PurIST, a molecular subtyping algorithm for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), across different platforms. We compared PurIST calls between matched samples processed by whole transcriptome and commercial exome capture RNA-seq. In parallel, we compared subtypes between matched samples processed by NanoString and whole transcriptome RNA-seq from the PANCREAS trial (NCT04683315). Between whole transcriptome and exome capture, subtype agreement

A theory of cerebellar learning as spike-based reinforcement learning in continuous time and space.

The cerebellum has been considered to perform error-based supervised learning via long-term depression (LTD) at synapses between parallel fibers and Purkinje cells (PCs). Since the discovery of multiple synaptic plasticity other than LTD, recent studies have suggested that synergistic plasticity mechanisms could enhance the learning capability of the cerebellum. Indeed, we have proposed a concept of cerebellar learning as a reinforcement learning (RL) machine. However, there is still a gap between the conceptual algorithm and its detailed implementation. To close this gap, in this research, we

Causes and Effects Contributing to Sudden Death in Epilepsy and the Rationale for Prevention and Intervention.

Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) claims the lives of one in every thousand epileptic patients each year. Autonomic, cardiac, and respiratory pieces to a mechanistic puzzle have not yet been completely assembled. We propose a single sequence of causes and effects that unifies disparate and competitive concepts into a single algorithm centered on ictal obstructive apnea. Based on detailed animal studies that are sometimes impossible in humans, and striking parallels with a growing body of clinical examples, this framework (1) accounts for the autonomic, cardiac, and respiratory data t

Collaborative Phenotype Inference from Comorbid Substance Use Disorders and Genotypes.

Data in large-scale genetic studies of complex human diseases, such as substance use disorders, are often incomplete. Despite great progress in genotype imputation, e.g., the IMPUTE2 method, considerably less progress has been made in inferring phenotypes. We designed a novel approach to integrate individuals' comorbid conditions with their genotype data to infer missing (unreported) diagnostic criteria of a disorder. The premise of our approach derives from correlations among symptoms and the shared biological bases of concurrent disorders such as co-dependence on cocaine and opioids. We desc

Online 3-D reconstruction of the right atrium from echocardiography data via a topographic cellular contour extraction algorithm.

A computational method providing online, automated 3-D reconstruction of the right atrium of the human heart is presented in this paper. Endocardial boundaries were extracted from transesophageal ultrasound data by a topographic cellular contour extraction (TCCE) algorithm. The TCCE method was implemented on a continuous-time, analog, massively parallel processor, and on a digital serial processor. Processing speeds were 500 or 40 frames per second, depending on the hardware used. Extracted boundary point sets were rendered into a 3-D mesh and the volume of the cavity was quantified. Accuracy

[Non-invasive ventilation in acute respiratory insufficiency].

Non invasive mechanical ventilation represents all the techniques of mechanical ventilation not using endotracheal connection to the respirator. Non invasive mechanical ventilation is essentially represented nowadays by facial (generally used for acute respiratory failure) and nasal ventilation (widely used for long term mechanical ventilation at home). Following in France the first studies of Rideau in the '80 in patients with chronic respiratory failure secondary to muscular dystrophy, Meduri, then Brochard demonstrated the interest of non invasive mechanical ventilation in the management of

Structure-Aware Joint Sparse Optimization for Point Cloud Denoising.

Point clouds are widely used to represent real-world objects in the fields of augmented/virtual reality, robotics, etc. However, they are often corrupted with noise, hindering downstream tasks such as mesh surface reconstruction, rendering, etc. In this paper, we revisit sparse point cloud representation for denoising. We observe that existing works generally assume global sparsity of noise across point cloud surfaces, leading to over-smoothing, and typically adopt multiple stages to recover features, inevitably introducing biases and structural inconsistencies. To address these challenges, we

Reconfiguration planning and structure parameter design of a reconfigurable cable-driven lower limb rehabilitation robot.

Reconfigurable cable-driven parallel robots (RCDPRs) have attracted much attention as a novel type of cable-driven robot that can change their cable anchor position. The reconfigurable cable-driven lower limb rehabilitation robot (RCDLR) employs RCDPRs in lower limb rehabilitation to achieve multiple training modes. This paper investigates the reconfiguration planning and structural parameter design of the RCDLR. The RCDLR aims to fulfill the requirements of early passive rehabilitation training. Therefore, motion capture data are analyzed and mapped to the target trajectory of the RCDLR. Thro

The Evolution of Emergency Front of Neck Access: A Historical Review.

Airway patency loss causes acute deoxygenation and carbon dioxide clearance failure and requires immediate intervention to prevent death. When less-invasive airway management approaches and technologies fail, the rescue algorithm end point is emergency front of neck access (eFONA), a high-risk, low-frequency intervention necessitating specialized training and regular skill maintenance. The historical evolution of surgical airway rescue reveals a progress arc from initial resistance to neck operations due to fear of complications, through acceptance of tracheal access for life-saving measures d

Multi-objective cooperative controller design for rapid state-of-charge balancing and flexible bus voltage regulation in shipboard DC microgrids.

In this paper, a multi-objective cooperative (MOC) controller based on average consensus algorithm is designed to achieve rapid State-of-Charge (SoC) balancing, proportional load current sharing, and flexible DC bus voltage regulation for parallel battery storage units (BSUs) in shipboard DC microgrids. Different from the conventional secondary controllers, the designed MOC controller can simultaneously achieve the above three control objectives with a fully distributed manner without requiring multiple controllers, thereby effectively improving the system stability and reducing the communicat

Comparative Effectiveness Research: A Roadmap to Sail the Seas of IBD Therapies.

The drug pipeline for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has dramatically expanded over the last two decades, and it is expected to further grow in the upcoming years with the introduction of new agents with different mechanisms of action. However, such an increase of therapeutic options needs to be paralleled with an appropriate development of research to help physicians in the decision-making process when choosing which drug to prescribe. On the population level, comparative effectiveness research (CER) is intended to explore and identify relevant differences-in terms of both
