Antisocial Personality Disorder in Mexican Women: A Study of Sociodemographic Variables and Comorbid Mental Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Antisocial personality disorder (APD) is mainly based on social irresponsibility that leads to delinquent, criminal, and exploitative behavior toward others, as well as difficulty in adapting to social norms. This disorder predominates in the male gender, and therefore, most of the research to date has been conducted in men. In the following study, we aimed to describe the main sociodemographic variables and psychiatric comorbidities presented in women with a diagnosis of APD. METHODS: We assessed 54 women with a diagnosis of APD, of whom sociodemographic characteristics were co

The Nadja case.

On October 4, 1926, a young woman who seemed lost in the street met one of the most important writers of the century, André Breton, who had just published the First Manifesto of Surrealism two years before. The young woman was named Léona Delcourt, but one used to call her Nadja. She fell in love with Breton, but he remained more interested in her poetic strangeness, which expressed itself in her conversation, drawings, and letters. Their intimate relationship lasted only ten days, but correspondence continued until March 1927, when she developed acute psychosis and was interned in psychiatric

[The concept of «multiple complex developmental disorder» - a disorder of social interaction, paranoid thinking and social anxiety in a 17-year-old boy].

OBJECTIVES: Multiple complex developmental disorder (MCDD) is a little-known disorder characterized by disturbances in the regulation of emotions, social interactions and thought disorders. Neither the classification system of ICD-10 nor the DSM-IV lists MCDD as an independent disorder. METHODS: The study presents an overview on diagnostic criteria, current research and illustration by a case report of a 17-year-old adolescent. RESULTS: MCDD, autistic disorders and schizophrenic disorders partially overlap. A clear classification or differentiation is currently not clearly possible. CONCLUS

Obesity may be more associated with disordered eating behaviors, somatization, insecure attachment styles, and sexual dysfunction: an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a challenging disease due to its multifactorial pathogenesis. However, sexual health is a poorly explored aspect in these patients, and the interaction between eating behavior, psychological factors, and sexual function remains insufficiently characterized, although it may represent a key aspect in clinical management. AIMS: To provide a characterization of psychological, eating, and sexual function characteristics of patients with obesity through an exploratory analysis. METHODS: A cross-sectional, single-center study was carried out at Umberto I Hospital of Sapienza

The spectrum of sociopathy in dementia.

Although well-known from head trauma and acute strokes, sociopathic behavior from dementia is less known and understood. This study reviewed 33 dementia patients who had been in trouble with the law. They were divided into two groups: 22 who committed impulsive sociopathic acts and 11 who committed non-impulsive acts. The impulsive patients demonstrated nonviolent acts, such as disinhibited sexual behavior or pathological stealing, and had disproportionate frontal-caudate atrophy on neuroimaging. The majority of non-impulsive patients demonstrated agitation-paranoia, sometimes with reactive ag

Neuromyelitis optica, psychiatric symptoms and primary polydipsia: a case report.

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an aggressive demyelinating disease that typically affects the optic nerves and spinal cord. While it is increasingly recognized that cerebral lesions are common in NMO, there have been no reported cases of NMO presenting with psychiatric symptoms and polydipsia. We describe a patient with classic signs and symptoms of NMO who also demonstrated prominent psychiatric symptoms and polydipsia that were tied to his flares and resolved with treatment of his NMO. This case expands our understanding of possible presentations of NMO.

Biosensor-Integrated Virtual Reality for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Psychosis: A Systematic Review of a New Therapeutic Frontier.

Psychosis presents significant treatment challenges, and standard Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for psychosis often faces limitations due to patient engagement issues and reliance on subjective self-reporting. The integration of Virtual Reality (VR), physiological biosensors, and artificial intelligence offers a transformative opportunity to address these challenges. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. A thorough literature search was performed across seven databases. Twelve randomized controlled trials involving 1504 participants were incl

Daily nonsuicidal self-injury thoughts in emerging adulthood: The relevance of pre-adolescent borderline traits.

Longitudinal studies exploring the role of early personality vulnerabilities as risk factors for later NSSI dynamics are scarce. In this study, we assess how pre-adolescent borderline personality pathology (BPP) traits (assessed at mean age 12.78; SDage = 1.38, age range = 7.17-14.78) shape dynamic links between daily socio-emotional dysregulation and NSSI thoughts during emerging adulthood (Mage = 20.96, SDage = 1.63). Mothers of 131 children completed questionnaires about their child's BPP traits in pre-adolescence. These children were re-assessed eight years later and were asked to complete

[Psychological aspects of ulcerative rectocolitis (author's transl)].

Ulcerative rectocolitis has been known for quite some time as a psychosomatic disease, it is an organic disease occurring in people with a particular personality rendering them susceptible to certain conflicts or stress which would be able to play a causing role in the appearance or exacerbations of the disease. Insofar as the psychological study is concerned, there are two important points to keep in mind: the role of psychological trauma as a stimulating factor and the basic personality. In 90% of the cases observed, psychological factors are found as provoking the hemorrage, as found by Gro

SCL 90-R interpretation and brain tumour: a correction factor?

OBJECTIVE: Determine whether spurious SCL 90-R profiles resulting from endorsement of neurologic treatment items can be corrected and still retain ecological validity. DESIGN: The proportion of subjects' item endorsement was compared with the adult non-patient norm group. Items with discriminative power (chi 2 > 25, p < 0.001 and endorsement by at least 25% of subjects) underwent principal-components analysis with somatic treatment and psychiatric factors identified. Items in the somatic treatment factor were extracted as the corrective factor. The resultant corrected T scores were plotted ag

Psychopathological symptoms associated with synthetic cannabinoid use: a comparison with natural cannabis.

BACKGROUND: Synthetic cannabinoids (SCs) are a class of new psychoactive substances that have been rapidly evolving around the world throughout recent years. Many different synthetic cannabinoid analogues are on the consumer market and sold under misleading names, like "spice" or "incense." A limited number of studies have reported serious health effects associated with SC use. In this study, we compared clinical and subclinical psychopathological symptoms associated with SC use and natural cannabis (NC) use. METHODS: A convenience sample of 367 NC and SC users was recruited online, including

Promoting mindfulness in psychotherapists in training influences the treatment results of their patients: a randomized, double-blind, controlled study.

BACKGROUND: All therapists direct their attention in some manner during psychotherapy. A special form of directing attention, 'mindfulness', is recommended. This study aimed to examine whether, and to what extent, promoting mindfulness in psychotherapists in training (PiT) influences the treatment results of their patients. METHODS: The therapeutic course and treatment results of 124 inpatients, who were treated for 9 weeks by 18 PiTs, were compared. The PiTs were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups: (i) those practicing Zen meditation (MED; n = 9 or (ii) control group, which did not perform m

Links between body mass index, total body fat, cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, and insulin sensitivity in patients with obesity related to depression, anger, and anxiety.

OBJECTIVE: Define links between psychosocial parameters and metabolic variables in obese females before and after a low-calorie diet. METHOD: Nine female obese patients (age 36.1 +/- 7.1 years, body mass index [BMI] > 30 kg/m2) were investigated before and after a 6-week low-calorie diet accompanied by behavior therapy. Blood lipids, insulin sensitivity (Bergman protocol), fat distribution (by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry [DEXA]), as well as psychological parameters such as depression, anger, anxiety, symptom load, and well-being, were assessed before and after the dieting period. Virtual reality-based cognitive behavioural therapy for patients with generalized social anxiety disorder: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with generalized social anxiety disorder (SAD) avoid various social situations and can be reluctant to engage in in vivo exposure therapy. Highly personalized practising can be required before patients are ready to perform in vivo exposure. Virtual reality-based therapy could be beneficial for this group. AIMS: To assess the feasibility and potential effect of virtual reality-based cognitive behavioural therapy (VR-CBT) for patients with severe generalized SAD. METHODS: Fifteen patients with generalized SAD attended up to 16 VR-CBT sessions. Questionnaires on clinical an

Impulsive smoking in a patient with Parkinson's disease treated with dopamine agonists.

Impulse control disorders, including pathological gambling, binge eating, compulsive shopping and hypersexual behaviors, have frequently been reported as a side effect of dopaminergic medications for Parkinson's disease (PD). Here we describe a patient with PD who developed an unusual manifestation of impulsive behaviors, including cigarette smoking, associated with an increase in dopamine agonist medication. We postulate this to be related to an overstimulation of mesolimbic dopamine receptors responsible for reward-seeking behaviors. Further research is needed to examine impulsive cigarette

O'Connor v. Donaldson: retelling a classic and finding some revisionist history.

This article discusses the 1975 Supreme Court opinion O'Connor v. Donaldson. The article first examines the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, the basis for the O'Connor ruling. It then looks carefully at the Court's conclusions, with particular attention to the Court's reasoning and analysis. The article goes on to look at how the Supreme Court has interpreted O'Connor on subsequent occasions and suggests that the Court has often misconstrued its own decision. The article concludes by offering thoughts and commentary on the O'Connor opinion and its progeny.

Psychiatric factors associated with dangerous misidentification delusions.

The delusional misidentification syndromes are characterized by misidentification delusions of others or of the self. Aggressive ideas or behaviors often accompany these delusions. The relationship between delusional misidentification and dangerousness remains for the most part poorly understood. In the present article, we compare a group of dangerous individuals suffering from dangerous misidentification delusions with a group of dangerous individuals suffering from other types of delusions. Individuals with dangerous misidentification delusions were more likely to experience grandiose ideati

[Pathomorphosis of classical forms of psychopathies].

The paper deals with questions concerning the modification of classical forms of psychopathy. The forms of psychopathy are not invariable, rigid. They can change during the life span of one psychopathic personality and be expressed in an interchange of obligatory (main) and facultative (supplementary) personality traits, as well as in different variations of the facultative traits of a psychopathic personality. Besides, the forms of psychopathy may gradually change during separate periods (if comparing the structure of separate forms), which indicate the dependence of the structure and dynamic

Predictors and mediators of trait anger across the psychosis continuum: The role of attachment style, paranoia and social cognition.

Anger in the context of psychosis has a significant impact on treatment outcomes and serious implications for risk management. Understanding mechanisms underlying anger will improve interventions and inform strategies for prevention. This study is the first to examine the relationships between anger and key theoretical drivers across different phases of the psychosis continuum. A battery including measures of theory of mind, attachment, hostile attribution bias, paranoia and anger was administered to 174 participants (14 ultra-high risk, 20 first-episode, 20 established psychosis, 120 non-clin
