Neural Correlates of Motor Recovery Measured by SPECT at Six Months After Basal Ganglia Stroke.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate neural correlates associated with recovery of motor function over 6 months in patients with basal ganglia (BG) stroke using acetazolamide (ACZ) stress brain-perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). METHODS: Medical records of 22 patients presenting first-ever BG stroke were retrospectively reviewed. Regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebrovascular reserve (CVR) were measured for 9 regions in each cerebral hemisphere (primary motor cortex, supplementary motor area, premotor cortex, prefrontal cortex, temporal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital l

Cholinesterase inhibitors are compatible with psychosocial intervention for Alzheimer disease patients suggested by neuroimaging findings.

We previously reported that the frontal lobe was stimulated by psychosocial intervention for dementia patients, and that the parietal lobe was associated with logical judgment. We hypothesized that the combined therapeutic approach with symptomatic drug treatment can directly stimulate not only attention function but also judgment function indirectly to observing other participants' behaviors. Fifty-two patients with Alzheimer disease underwent the group reminiscence approach with reality orientation, as well as the donepezil treatment. The cerebral blood flow (CBF) was assessed with 99mTc-ECD

[Awake surgery with line bisection task for two cases of parietal glioma in the non-dominant hemisphere].

Awake surgery for lesions in the non-dominant parietal lobe is rare. We report two cases of right parietal lobe glioma for which awake surgery was performed in order to avoid ataxie optique and hemispatial neglect due to injury in the superior and inferior parietal lobule, respectively. Among several tests to assess the dysfunction of spatial recognition, line bisection test was selected for the task during awake surgery because of its simplicity, easy repetition, and utility. The tumor was successfully removed without any neurological deficit in both the cases. The line bisection test is simp

Phase synchronization alterations of EEG oscillations during emotional video processing in depression and anxiety: a transdiagnostic study.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence indicates overlapping neurobiological variations across transdiagnostic psychiatric disorders. Considering depression and anxiety as the most common and co-occurring symptoms in affective disorders, we hypothesize shared symptom-related electrophysiological aberrations in the neural rhythmic oscillations across diagnostic boundaries. METHODS: 53 treatment-naïve patients with major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, or depressive episode in bipolar disorder, and 83 healthy controls (HC), underwent 64-channel electroencephalographic (EEG) recording

Time to bury the chisel: a continuous dorsal association tract system.

The arcuate fasciculus may be subdivided into a tract directly connecting frontal and temporal lobes and a pair of indirect subtracts in which the fronto-temporal connection is mediated by connections to the inferior parietal lobe. This tripartition has been advanced as an improvement over the centuries-old consensus that the lateral dorsal association fibers form a continuous system with no discernible discrete parts. Moreover, it has been used as the anatomical basis for functional hypotheses regarding linguistic abilities. Ex hypothesi, damage to the indirect subtracts leads to deficits in

A Study of the Brain Network Connectivity in Visual-Word Pairing Associative Learning and Episodic Memory Reactivating Task.

Episodic memory allows a person to recall and mentally reexperience specific episodes from one's personal past. Studies of episodic memory are of great significance for the diagnosis and the exploration of the mechanism of memory generation. Most of the current studies focus on certain brain regions and pay less attention to the interrelationship between multiple brain regions. To explore the interrelationship in the brain network, we use an open fMRI dataset to construct the brain functional connectivity and effective connectivity network. We establish a binary directed network of the memory

Neurophysiological principles of inhibitory control processes during cognitive flexibility.

Inhibitory control plays an indispensable role in cognitive flexibility. Nevertheless, the neurophysiological principles underlying this are incompletely understood. This owes to the fact that the representational dynamics, as coded in oscillatory neural activity of different frequency bands has not been considered until now-despite being of conceptual relevance. Moreover, it is unclear in how far distinct functional neuroanatomical regions are concomitantly involved in the processing of representational dynamics. We examine these questions using a combination of EEG methods. We show that thet

Flexible Changes in Attentional Focus and Task Rules Rely on A Shared Set of Frontoparietal Oscillatory Dynamics.

Flexible changes in behavior can involve changes in the processing of external information (i.e., shifts in attention between different stimuli) or internal information (i.e., shifts in task rules stored in memory). However, it is unclear if different types of flexible change rely on separate, domain-specific neural processes or on a domain-general system, which enables flexible actions independent of the type of change needed. In the current study, participants performed a task switching procedure while we measured neural oscillations via EEG. Importantly, we independently manipulated the nee

Parietal maps of visual signals for bodily action planning.

The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) has long been understood as a high-level integrative station for computing motor commands for the body based on sensory (i.e., mostly tactile and visual) input from the outside world. In the last decade, accumulating evidence has shown that the parietal areas not only extract the pragmatic features of manipulable objects, but also subserve sensorimotor processing of others' actions. A paradigmatic case is that of the anterior intraparietal area (AIP), which encodes the identity of observed manipulative actions that afford potential motor actions the observer

Exogenous features versus prior experiences modulate different subregions of the right IPL during episodic memory retrieval.

The fractionation view holds that distinct cognitive operations are mediated by subregions of the inferior parietal lobule (IPL). Within IPL, we hypothesised that retrieval-related activity in different parts of the right supramarginal gyrus (rSMG) may be modulated differentially by information acquired via different combinations of attention signals at encoding. We had two groups of participants watch a 42-min TV episode and, after a 24-hr delay, perform a temporal-order judgment task during fMRI. Each retrieval trial comprised three images presented sequentially, requiring participants to ju

Parietal cortex signals come unstuck in time.

Humans and other animals are surprisingly adept at estimating the duration of temporal intervals, even without the use of watches and clocks. This ability is typically studied in the lab by asking observers to indicate their estimate of the time between two external sensory events. The results of such studies confirm that humans can accurately estimate durations on a variety of time scales. Although many brain areas are thought to contribute to the representation of elapsed time, recent neurophysiological studies have linked the parietal cortex in particular to the perception of sub-second tim

Mapping the 40-Hz auditory steady-state response using current density reconstructions.

We mapped the 40-Hz aSSR from nine normal subjects using PET-independent low-resolution electroencephalographic tomography (LORETA) as well as PET-weighted LORETA and minimum norm (MinNorm) current density reconstructions. In grand mean data, PET-independent LORETA identified seven sites with peaks in current density in right temporal lobe, right brainstem/cerebellum, right parietal lobe, left cerebellum/temporal lobe, and right frontal lobe. PET-weighted LORETA found six of the same sites as the PET-independent LORETA: the right brainstem source was eliminated and two right-frontal sources we

Attention network impairments in patients with focal frontal or parietal lesions.

Recently, research on attention has focused on 3 networks that are linked to separate brain regions, i.e. orienting, alerting, and executive control. The attention network test (ANT) is one of the methods to measure the three attention functions. However, neuropsychological investigations have not examined the anatomical disassociation of different attention networks with the same task. We compared the efficiencies of the 3 networks between brain-damaged patients (27 frontal lesions, 20 temporal lesions, and 21 parietal lesions) and healthy controls (N=58) with ANT. Comparing the brain damaged
