Unexpected Pathogen Diversity Detected in Australian Avifauna Highlights Potential Biosecurity Challenges.

Birds may act as hosts for numerous pathogens, including members of the family Chlamydiaceae, beak and feather disease virus (BFDV), avipoxviruses, Columbid alphaherpesvirus 1 (CoAHV1) and Psittacid alphaherpesvirus 1 (PsAHV1), all of which are a significant biosecurity concern in Australia. While Chlamydiaceae and BFDV have previously been detected in Australian avian taxa, the prevalence and host range of avipoxviruses, CoAHV1 and PsAHV1 in Australian birds remain undetermined. To better understand the occurrence of these pathogens, we screened 486 wild birds (kingfisher, parrot, pigeon and

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Avian Chlamydiosis Detected by Polymerase Chain Reaction in Psittacine Birds in Thailand.

This study surveyed avian chlamydiosis, with the aim to estimate the prevalence and potential risk factors associated with Chlamydia psittaci infection in psittacine birds kept as domestic pets in Thailand. Oropharyngeal swabs were collected from 120 psittacine birds that were randomly selected from hospitals in the central (Bangkok) and northeastern regions (Khon Kaen) of Thailand between 2019 and 2021. The oropharyngeal swabs were subject to polymerase chain reaction testing to detect the C psittaci ompA gene. The prevalence of C psittaci was 2.5% (3/ 120, 95% confidence interval = 0.3-5.3).

Prevalence of asymptomatic infections of Chlamydia psittaci in psittacine birds in Korea.

Avian chlamydiosis is an acute or chronic bacterial disease of birds. Chlamydia psittaci is the primary agent of the disease. It is also an important zoonotic pathogen. Chlamydia avium and Chlamydia gallinacea have also been recognized as potential causative agents of the disease. Clinical signs of this disease can vary in severity. Asymptomatic infections of Chlamydia have commonly been reported in various birds worldwide. In this study, we investigated the distribution of Chlamydia species in healthy psittacine birds in Korea. A total of 263 samples (pharyngeal/cloacal swabs and faeces) were

Mitro-aortic infective endocarditis produced by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae: case report and review of the literature.

Endocarditis produced by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is an uncommon disease in humans. This bacterial species is found worldwide as a commensal or a pathogen in many animals. Infection in humans is usually due to occupational exposure. The case is reported of a 43-year-old male parrot breeder with native aortic and mitral valve endocarditis and NYHA class II heart failure at six months after wound infection. The patient was discharged after six weeks' treatment with intravenous penicillin G and replacement of the mitral and aortic valves due to severe regurgitation. At one year after surgery

Comparative approaches to the neurobiology of avian vocal learning.

Birdsong provides an opportunity to study sensorimotor learning in the context of brain evolution. Despite the vast diversity in song behavior across species, mechanistic understanding of birdsong comes primarily from the zebra finch, a closed-ended songbird that learns one simple and stereotyped song, which it keeps singing throughout adulthood. It remains unclear if neural mechanisms of finch song production and learning generalize with other species, including open-ended learners with more complex and variable vocalizations. Here we review finch communication alongside both closely and dist

MUCOPOLYSACCHARIDOSIS II (MPS II) IN A FREE-LIVING KAKA (NESTOR MERIDIONALIS) IN NEW ZEALAND.

A lysosomal storage disease, identified as a mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS), was diagnosed in a free-living Kaka (Nestor meridionalis), an endemic New Zealand parrot, which exhibited weakness, incoordination, and seizures. Histopathology showed typical colloid-like cytoplasmic inclusions in Purkinje cells and many other neurons throughout the brain. Electron microscopy revealed that storage bodies contained a variety of linear, curved, or circular membranous profiles and electron-dense bodies. Because the bird came from a small isolated population of Kaka in the northern South Island, a genetic c

Psittacosis.

Pneumonia caused by Chlamydia psittaci likely occurs considerably more frequently than is suggested by the mere 100 to 200 cases reported annually to public health authorities. Parrots and other psittacine birds still are regarded as the major reservoir of the infectious agent and most recognized cases are associated with owning pet birds or working in a pet store. It was once thought that birds imported from abroad, often illegally, were a principal source, but many domestic breeder flocks of pet birds now have become infected. There is little that is distinctive in the clinical presentation

Convergent and lineage-specific genomic changes shape adaptations in sugar-consuming birds.

High-sugar diets cause human metabolic diseases, yet several bird lineages convergently adapted to feeding on sugar-rich nectar or fruits. We investigated the underlying molecular mechanisms in hummingbirds, parrots, honeyeaters, and sunbirds by generating nine new genomes and 90 tissue-specific transcriptomes. Comparative screens revealed an excess of repeated selection in both protein-coding and regulatory sequences in sugar-feeding birds, suggesting reuse of genetic elements. Sequence or expression changes in sugar-feeders affect genes involved in blood pressure regulation and lipid, amino

The pathogenesis of proventricular dilatation disease.

Bornaviruses cause neurologic diseases in several species of birds, especially parrots, waterfowl and finches. The characteristic lesions observed in these birds include encephalitis and gross dilatation of the anterior stomach - the proventriculus. The disease is thus known as proventricular dilatation disease (PDD). PDD is characterized by extreme proventricular dilatation, blockage of the passage of digesta and consequent death by starvation. There are few clinical resemblances between this and the bornaviral encephalitides observed in mammals. Nevertheless, there are common virus-induced p

A Method for Processing Whole Blood for Heterologous Packed Red Blood Cell Transfusion for Use in a Green-Winged Macaw (Ara chloropterus).

An 11-year-old male green-winged macaw (Ara chloropterus) diagnosed with severe anemia required a packed red blood cell transfusion rather than whole blood based on crossmatching results. Crossmatching performed with a harlequin macaw (Ara ararauna x Ara chloropterus) revealed a compatible major crossmatch and incompatible minor crossmatch. Whole blood was collected from the donor macaw and, using readily available clinical supplies and low-speed centrifugation, processed into packed red blood cells for transfusion. The patient showed a rapid recovery and normalization of hematocrit 2 weeks po

Angiostrongylus dujardini infection in a coconut lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus) from a zoological garden in Switzerland.

Angiostrongylus spp. (Metastrongyloidea) can cause severe disease in several animal species and humans. This report describes an infection with Angiostrongylus dujardini in a captive coconut lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus) from a zoo in Switzerland. The bird was reported being attacked by conspecifics, removed from the flock, and hospitalized. It showed lethargy, moderately reduced body condition, and lack of reaction to visual stimuli. Analgesic and antibiotic treatment were initiated but because of worsening of its general condition, the bird was euthanized the following day. Necropsy re

Hidden impacts of conservation management on fertility of the critically endangered kākāpō.

BACKGROUND: Animal conservation often requires intensive management actions to improve reproductive output, yet any adverse effects of these may not be immediately apparent, particularly in threatened species with small populations and long lifespans. Hand-rearing is an example of a conservation management strategy which, while boosting populations, can cause long-term demographic and behavioural problems. It is used in the recovery of the critically endangered kākāpō (Strigops habroptilus), a flightless parrot endemic to New Zealand, to improve the slow population growth that is due to infreq

Neuropathology of feral conures with bromethalin toxicosis.

Bromethalin is a widely used neurotoxic rodenticide sometimes affecting nontarget wildlife. However, the effects of bromethalin on avian species are largely unknown. Here, we report the neuropathology of 14 feral conures (Psittacara sp.) with bromethalin toxicosis. Clinically, all birds presented with different degrees of paraparesis that sometimes progressed to dysphagia, ataxia, and tetraparesis. Histologically, there was astrogliosis, pallor, and vacuolation of white matter in the brain. This was usually more prominent in the medial longitudinal fasciculus, pons, optic tectum, cerebellar pe

SALMONELLA SPP. INFECTION IN PSITTACIDAE AT A WILDLIFE REHABILITATION CENTER IN THE STATE OF MATO GROSSO DO SUL, BRAZIL.

The growing interest in wild birds as pets and the increasingly complex interspecific relationships due to human activities in wild environments underscore the need for better knowledge about the health of these animals. Salmonella stands out among the infectious agents of considerable importance to both animal and human health. The importance of these enterobacteria to the health of humans and livestock animals has long been known. In wild birds in countries such as Brazil, however, little is known regarding the frequency of infection and the main serotypes of occurrence. In the present study

Pulmonary adenocarcinoma with osseous metastasis and secondary paresis in a blue and gold macaw (Ara ararauna).

A 16-yr-old female blue and gold macaw (Ara ararauna) was presented with an acute history of lethargy, inappetance, ataxia, and paralysis. The bird had rapidly progressed from a normal state to complete inability to perch or ambulate within a 48-hr period. Neurologic examination revealed bilateral hind limb paresis with upper motor neuron signs present in both legs and the vent. Radiographs identified multiple nodular soft-tissue opacities within the cranial coelomic cavity and a single nodule superimposed with the thoracic spine. The bird was euthanized and submitted for necropsy, which revea

[Pathologic X-ray signs in tuberculosis of ornamental birds and birds of prey].

Tuberculosis is still important as a disease of birds kept as pets and in zoos, and as a zoonosis. In living birds the diagnosis is difficult. In combination with the clinical and laboratory examination, radiology may help to lead to the diagnosis "generalised mycobacterial infection". Eight cases of tuberculosis seen in the clinic of our institute showed the different radiographic signs which may occur in the course of a mycobacterial infection. The specificity of the x-rays in combination with clinical and laboratory results is discussed.

[Advances in research on Crouzon syndrome and related ophthalmic complications].

Crouzon syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by acrocephaly, exophthalmos, hypertelorism, strabismus, parrot-beaked nose, and hypoplastic maxilla. It is usually caused by a pathogenic mutation in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 gene and premature fusion of the sutures of the cranium and the base of the skull. This article documents the ophthalmic complications in patients with Crouzon syndrome before and after the influence of craniofacial surgery with particular emphasis on the different mechanisms and treatments involved. It is important to perform timely decompre

[Laboratory diagnosis of rare diseases].

Psittacosis (parrot fever) is underdiagnosed in Sweden, possibly due to lack of awareness, and the fact that only five out of 24 clinical microbiology laboratories routinely perform the PCR test for Chlamydia psittaci. The test has shown 100% sensitivity and 100% sensitivity for the pathogen in samples from the lower part of the respiratory tract which caters for a high predictive value in patients with symptoms and signs of community-acquired atypical pneumonias, provided optimal patient selection. Knowledge and awareness of treatable rare diseases amongst healthcare personnel combined with c
