Enhanced N170 elicited by words in Chinese developmental dyslexia.

Impaired print tuning in dyslexia has been shown in alphabetic languages; whether we can observe the same in a nonalphabetic language such as Chinese is still questionable. The present study investigated the N170 component in response to Chinese words versus nonword pseudo-words in 10-year-old children with developmental dyslexia (DD) when they were asked to performed a lexical decision task. The N170 was enhanced for DD group than control group, regardless of Chinese words or pseudo-words. The group effect of N170 amplitudes was more robust for Chinese words over pseudo-words. Although the N1

Contour adaptation reduces the spreading of edge induced colors.

Brief exposure to flickering achromatic outlines of an area causes a reduction in the brightness contrast of the surface inside the area. This contour adaptation to achromatic contours does not reduce surface contrast when the surface is chromatic (the saturation or colorimetric purity of the surface is maintained). In addition to reducing the brightness of physical luminance contrast, contour adaptation also reduces (or even reverses) the illusory brightness contrast seen in the Craik-O'Brien-Cornsweet illusion, in which two physically identical grey areas appear different brightness because

Why is the processing of global motion impaired in adults with developmental dyslexia?

Individuals with dyslexia are purported to have a selective dorsal stream impairment that manifests as a deficit in perceiving visual global motion relative to global form. However, the underlying nature of the visual deficit in readers with dyslexia remains unclear. It may be indicative of a difficulty with motion detection, temporal processing, or any task that necessitates integration of local visual information across multiple dimensions (i.e. both across space and over time). To disentangle these possibilities we administered four diagnostic global motion and global form tasks to a large

A bidirectional link between brain oscillations and geometric patterns.

Like hallucinogenic drugs, full-field flickering visual stimulation produces regular, geometric hallucinations such as radial or spiral patterns. Computational and theoretical models have revealed that the geometry of these hallucinations can be related to functional neuro-anatomy. However, while experimental evidence links both visual flicker and hallucinogenic drugs to upward and downward modulations of brain oscillatory activity, the exact relation between brain oscillations and geometric hallucinations remains a mystery. Here we demonstrate that, in human observers, this link is bidirectio

Variability of eye movements when viewing dynamic natural scenes.

How similar are the eye movement patterns of different subjects when free viewing dynamic natural scenes? We collected a large database of eye movements from 54 subjects on 18 high-resolution videos of outdoor scenes and measured their variability using the Normalized Scanpath Saliency, which we extended to the temporal domain. Even though up to about 80% of subjects looked at the same image region in some video parts, variability usually was much greater. Eye movements on natural movies were then compared with eye movements in several control conditions. "Stop-motion" movies had almost identi

[Computing function and its representation in the parietal cortex in humans and animals].

The currently available evidence suggests that not only adults but children of preverbal age and animals possess the ability to define numbers. The behavioral studies in infants and animals show that number perception, quantity discrimination, and elementary adding and subtraction appear in onto- and phylogenesis prior to language. There are parallels between number processing in animals and humans: a) the ability to discriminate between two numbers improves as the numerical distance between them increases; b) for equal numerical distance, discrimination of two numbers worsens as their numeric

Finding the face in the crowd: an anger superiority effect.

Facial gestures have been given an increasingly critical role in models of emotion. The biological significance of interindividual transmission of emotional signals is a pivotal assumption for placing the face in a central position in these models. This assumption invited a logical corollary, examined in this article: Face-processing should be highly efficient. Three experiments documented an asymmetry in the processing of emotionally discrepant faces embedded in crowds. The results suggested that threatening faces pop out of crowds, perhaps as a result of a preattentive, parallel search for s

Prosopagnosia and agnosia for noncanonical views. An autopsied case.

It has been postulated that for prosopagnosia to occur, bilateral lesions of the central visual system are usually necessary. All but 1 of the 10 previously documented cases that came to autopsy showed this pattern. However, the long survival period after the onset of prosopagnosia in most of these patients limits the value of the autopsy findings for clinicopathological correlation. A patient is presented who died 10 days after she had developed prosopagnosia, topographagnosia and an agnosia for real objects seen from noncanonical views. These clinical symptoms corresponded directly to the au

Behavioral rehabilitation of functional alexia.

A 10-year-old boy with a functional reading deficit (i.e. functional alexia) was successfully treated with hospital based escape/avoidance procedures. A multiple baseline design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. Generalization of treatment effects across individuals, settings and time was demonstrated. Extension of these procedures to other functional deficits is discussed.

Cortical blindness after overlapping retinal-striate lesions: a limit to plasticity in the central visual system.

Lesions in cats, rats, and monkeys that spare more than 2% of the optic tract or visual cortex cause trivial deficits on most measures of vision. Overlap in the topography of the visual system may allow the spared remnant to 'see' a wider field of vision than the physiological map predicts. We tested whether monkeys left with only the lower retinal-field portion of their striate map could see with information coming from the upper half of the retina. In 6 rhesus monkeys the ganglion fibers exiting from the lower half of both retinae were cut with a photocoagulator. Later, the portion of area 1

Anomalous visual experiences, negative symptoms, perceptual organization and the magnocellular pathway in schizophrenia: a shared construct?

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is associated with impaired visual information processing. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between anomalous perceptual experiences, positive and negative symptoms, perceptual organization, rapid categorization of natural images and magnocellular (M) and parvocellular (P) visual pathway functioning. METHOD: Thirty-five unmedicated patients with schizophrenia and 20 matched healthy control volunteers participated. Anomalous perceptual experiences were assessed with the Bonn Scale for the Assessment Basic Symptoms (BSABS). General intellectual

Pathology of the optic nerve and visual association areas. Information given by the flash and pattern visual evoked potential, and the temporal and spatial contrast sensitivity function.

Spatial and temporal contrast sensitivity functions (CSF) were compared with visual evoked potentials (VEP) in two groups of patients with pathology selectively affecting different parts of the visual pathway. These consisted of 10 patients with a selective delay of the pattern VEP due to demyelination of one optic nerve (unilateral optic neuritis) and 11 patients with a selective delay of the flash VEP due to pathology of the visual association areas (primary presenile dementia, or Alzheimer's disease). The results led to the following conclusions. Comparison of the VEP and CSF results indica

Perceptual grouping, not covert attention, drives the connectedness effect in the ANS.

A robust finding in numerical cognition is that connecting items within an array leads to systematic underestimation of numerosity. This provides evidence that approximate numerosity perception relies on discrete objects rather than on continuous variables (e.g., total area, density, convex hull). While this connectedness effect is often attributed to perceptual grouping, an alternative interpretation is that connected items may capture covert attention, thereby biasing the sampling of visual information. We tested these competing accounts by combining a numerosity estimation task with a targe

Thematic knowledge survives visual crowding and influences object identification.

Object perception is challenged in complex and cluttered visual environments. This phenomenon, known as visual crowding, occurs when object identification is impaired because a target is surrounded by other objects. However, visual environments are meaningful, and objects are often arranged in coherent and predictable ways. In particular, thematic relations linking objects that play complementary roles in events (e.g., hammer–nail) facilitate conceptual processing, especially for manipulable objects. However, it remains unclear whether such semantic relations can also influence perceptual proc

Visual working memory in Parkinson's disease patients using real-world visual objects and perceptual organization.

BACKGROUND: Many studies reported impairment of working memory performance in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. However, it is largely unknown whether different characteristics of the memory items could affect the performance of visual working memory in PD patients. METHODS: In this study, we employed two types of stimuli - real-world objects and Gestalt organization, which may primarily evoke top-down modulation of high-level cognitive functions and bottom-up processing of low-level visual function, respectively, to investigate their effects on visual working memory performance in patients

Clutter costs in head-mounted displays: a study examining trade-offs between overlay and adjacent presentation of information.

This work examines the influence of clutter when presenting information with a head-mounted display (HMD). We compare clutter costs when displays overlay a real-world scene to the costs of visual scanning required when displays are presented separately. Using an HMD in safety-critical environments reduces repetitive visual scanning and head movements that can become effortful with separate displays, such as a tablet. However, a trade-off occurs with overlay displays when low visibility information in the scene is needed or when perceiving text and symbols on the display requires high visual ac

Segmentation as a bottleneck in numerical cognition.

Despite frequent appeals to the ecological relevance of number perception, number perception is typically studied using stimuli that differ greatly from real-world scenes. Consequently, it remains unclear whether numerical discrimination observed in controlled experimental settings operates under the same principles as it does 'in the wild.' In the present study, adult participants completed a number discrimination task with four stimulus conditions: (1) dot arrays, (2) dot arrays with visual noise, (3) naturalistic images, and (4) pseudo-naturalistic images designed to preserve object boundar

Evolution of reading and face circuits during the first three years of reading acquisition.

Although words and faces activate neighboring regions in the fusiform gyrus, we lack an understanding of how such category selectivity emerges during development. To investigate the organization of reading and face circuits at the earliest stage of reading acquisition, we measured the fMRI responses to words, faces, houses, and checkerboards in three groups of 60 French children: 6-year-old pre-readers, 6-year-old beginning readers and 9-year-old advanced readers. The results showed that specific responses to written words were absent prior to reading, but emerged in beginning readers, irrespe

Enhanced perception and memory: Insights from synesthesia and expertise.

Memory research has identified many strategies to enhance memory. However, natural foundations of enhanced memory are vastly underexplored. Interestingly, numerous studies show that synesthesia is associated with enhanced memory performance. Although it has been hypothesized for years that wider changes in visual perception are closely linked with enhanced memory functions in synesthesia, the hypothesis has never been directly put to the test. Here, we investigated whether visual perceptual abilities in synesthesia are linked with higher memory performance by comparing synesthetes who experien

Traffic symbol recognition modulates bodily actions.

Traffic signals, i.e., iconic symbols conveying traffic rules, generally represent spatial or movement meanings, e.g., "Stop", "Go", "Bend warning", or "No entry", and we visually perceive these symbols and produce appropriate bodily actions. The traffic signals are clearly thought to assist in producing bodily actions such as going forward or stopping, and the combination of symbolic recognition through visual perception and production of bodily actions could be one example of embodied cognition. However, to what extent our bodily actions are associated with the symbolic representations of co
