PERCEIVED RACISM AND NEGATIVE AFFECT: ANALYSES OF TRAIT AND STATE MEASURES OF AFFECT IN A COMMUNITY SAMPLE.

Racism is a significant psychosocial stressor that is hypothesized to have negative psychological and physical health consequences. The Reserve Capacity Model (Gallo & Matthews, 2003) suggests that low socioeconomic status may influence health through its effects on negative affect. We extend this model to study the effects of racism, examining the association of lifetime perceived racism to trait and daily negative affect. A multiethnic sample of 362 American-born Black and Latino adults completed the Perceived Ethnic Discrimination Questionnaire-Community Version (PEDQ-CV). Trait negative af

Facial discrimination in body dysmorphic, obsessive-compulsive and social anxiety disorders.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is characterized by preoccupation with perceived flaws in one's own appearance. Several risk factors such as aesthetic perceptual sensitivity have been proposed to explain BDD's unique symptomatology. Although research on facial discrimination is limited so far, the few existing studies have produced mixed results. Thus, the purpose of this study was to further examine facial discrimination in BDD. We administered a facial discrimination paradigm, which allows to assess the ability to identify slight to strong facial changes (e.g., hair loss, acne) when presented

"Imagine if I'm not here, what they're going to do?"-Health-care access and culturally and linguistically diverse women in prison.

BACKGROUND: Women in prison have complex medical needs and poorer health status than the general population. Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) women in prison, particularly those with limited English proficiency (LEP), have distinct needs and risk additional isolation, discrimination and marginalization when they are in prison. OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine how cultural and linguistic diversity, particularly LEP, affects the health-care experiences of women in prison. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: We conducted focus groups and semi-structured qualitative interviews with CALD

Sensory recovery of the hand with intercostal nerve transfer following complete avulsion of the brachial plexus.

BACKGROUND: Restoration of sensory function is imperative when prehensile function is restored after irreparable brachial plexus injury. However, there are few reports that focus on the results of sensory recovery after brachial plexus reconstruction. The purpose of this article is to report the results of sensory recovery of the hand with intercostal nerve transfer following complete brachial plexus injury. METHODS: Seventeen patients with complete brachial plexus injury underwent sensory reconstruction of the hand with intercostal nerve transfer to the median or ulnar nerve. All patients un

Vocational outcome following spinal cord injury.

STUDY DESIGN: Non-experimental (ex post facto) survey research design involving the use of a fixed alternative format questionnaire. OBJECTIVES: To investigate variables influencing vocational outcome, to identify barriers to gaining and sustaining employment and to identify the effects of variables on the type of work engaged in following spinal cord injury. The two sets of independent variables considered were, individual and injury-related factors (age at onset of injury, time since injury, extent/level of injury, highest educational qualification achieved pre-injury, and pre-injury occupa

The antecedents and consequences of racial/ethnic discrimination during adolescence: does the source of discrimination matter?

In the current study, we examined the precursors and consequences of discrimination for 876 Latino, African American, and Asian American adolescents (Mage = 16.9 years, SD = 0.43). The race/ethnic characteristics of schools and neighborhoods influenced adolescents' perceptions of the race/ethnic climates of these contexts. In turn, adolescents who viewed climates more negatively were more likely to perceive discriminatory treatment by school personnel, peers, and societal institutions. Discrimination from these 3 sources exerted differential influence on developmental outcomes: Greater discrim

Temporal frequency discrimination in optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis.

The temporal contrast sensitivity function and temporal frequency discrimination have been studied in normals and in 7 cases of multiple sclerosis or optic neuritis. Sinusoidal gratings of two spatial frequencies (0.2 and 2.0 cycles/deg) were used. The abnormalities demonstrated in the patients varied between individuals but overall a picture has emerged of four principal anomalies. The temporal transfer function of the 2 cycles/deg medium spatial frequency grating has a band-pass appearance, whereas it is low-pass in normal subjects (5 out of 8 eyes). The peak of temporal frequency discrimina

Prelingually Deaf Children With Cochlear Implants Show Better Perception of Voice Cues and Speech in Competing Speech Than Postlingually Deaf Adults With Cochlear Implants.

OBJECTIVES: Postlingually deaf adults with cochlear implants (CIs) have difficulties with perceiving differences in speakers' voice characteristics and benefit little from voice differences for the perception of speech in competing speech. However, not much is known yet about the perception and use of voice characteristics in prelingually deaf implanted children with CIs. Unlike CI adults, most CI children became deaf during the acquisition of language. Extensive neuroplastic changes during childhood could make CI children better at using the available acoustic cues than CI adults, or the lack

Depression among Black bisexual men with early and later life adversities.

This study examined the role of adulthood adversities in the relationship between childhood adversities and depression in 117 HIV-positive Black men who have sex with men and women (MSMW) and who have histories of childhood sexual abuse (CSA). Men were participants in the Enhanced Sexual Health Intervention for Men, a 6-session health intervention, and, at baseline, reported their experiences of CSA, childhood adversities, perceived discrimination, chronic stress, social support, and depressive symptoms. The relationship between childhood adversities, including CSA, and depression was mediated

Discrimination and Posttraumatic Symptomatology Among Trauma-exposed Sexual Minority Women and Transgender and Gender-Diverse People.

Sexual and gender minority women (SMW) and transgender and/or gender-diverse (TGD) people experience high rates of trauma, resulting in mental health disparities such as posttraumatic stress disorder. Nevertheless, contributors to posttraumatic stress symptoms among SMW and TGD people remain underexamined relative to cisgender, heterosexual people. Furthermore, it remains unclear whether stressors uniquely experienced by minoritized populations (e.g., discrimination) contribute to symptoms over and above general stressors (e.g., trauma exposure). The present study used path analysis to test wh

Perceived stigma mediates the relationship between regional gray matter volume and aggressive behavior in children affected by parental HIV/AIDS.

Perceived stigma, the subjective awareness of prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination against persons living with HIV and their children, is a recognized predictor of behavioral problems. However, the neurobiological basis underlying perceived stigma and its role in influencing aggressive behavior at neural level in children affected by parental HIV/AIDS remain largely unclear. In this study, 112 participants aged 10-17 years from a large neurobiological project were extracted for gray matter volume (GMV) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and medial temporal lobe (MTL). The results revealed a

Internalizing Profiles of Homeless Adults: Investigating Links Between Perceived Ostracism and Need-Threat.

Social ostracism among the homeless is a prevailing problem, yet few studies have focused on whether internalizing psychopathology moderates the links between feeling ostracized and perceiving threats to fundamental human needs. This study used a person-oriented approach to identify commonly occurring profiles of internalizing psychopathology characterized by symptoms of social anxiety, generalized anxiety, and depression (Low, Medium, and High Internalizers) among homeless participants residing in London, United Kingdom (N = 114; age range = 18-74; M age = 46; 25% women). An identity-irrelevant discrimination task reveals familiarity-advantage in face perception and no self-advantage in voice perception.

Whether or not self-face and self-voice are processed more accurately than others' remains inconclusive. Most previous studies asked participants to judge the presented stimulus as their own or as others', and compared response accuracy to discuss self-advantage. However, it is possible that participants responded correctly in the "other" trials not by identifying "other" but rather by rejecting "self." The present study employed an identity-irrelevant discrimination task, in which participants detected the odd stimulus among the three sequentially presented stimuli. We measured the discrimina

Impaired temporal processing of tactile and proprioceptive stimuli in cerebellar degeneration.

Performance of timed motor sequences relies on the cerebellum and basal ganglia, which integrate proprioceptive information during the motor task and set internal timing mechanisms. Accordingly, these structures are also involved in other temporal processes, such as the discrimination of the different afferent information in the domain of time. In the present study we tested temporal processing of proprioceptive and tactile stimuli in 20 patients with neurodegenerative cerebellar ataxia and 20 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects. Tactile temporal discrimination threshold was defined as the v

Discrimination and allostatic load in black middle-aged and older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Perceived discrimination has been associated with elevated allostatic load (AL), but findings among Black middle-aged and older adults are inconsistent. A focused synthesis is lacking, limiting understanding of how discrimination becomes biologically embedded. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to clarify the discrimination and AL relationship in Black individuals during aging and highlight key methodological and contextual factors. METHODS: A systematic search of seven databases following PRISMA guidelines included studies on discrimination and AL in Black adults aged 4

Assessing the Importance of Theory-Based Correlates of Future HIV Vaccine Intentions Among Black Men Who Have Sex With Men.

In the United States, Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) represent the most vulnerable population for HIV infection. A potential vaccine could ultimately be the most effective HIV prevention strategy. Understanding the factors that may adversely affect HIV vaccine acceptance among BMSM is critical. We conducted two online surveys with BMSM; one recruited 432 respondents, and another recruited 204. Respondents completed a demographic assessment and questions derived from health behavior change theories and the relevant empirical literature. The two surveys yielded similar results. The findi

Endocannabinoids Mediate Racial/Ethnic Discrimination Prediction of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms Moderated by Resting-State Functional Connectivity in Black and African American Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Individuals from marginalized ethnoracial groups face higher risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, exacerbated by experiencing racial/ethnic discrimination. Previous work separately explored the endocannabinoid (eCB) system and functional connectivity response to stress/trauma and suggested that experiences of chronic minority stress, such as racial discrimination, contribute to eCB tone and resting-state functional connectivity. We explored how circulating eCB tone, in conjunction with resting-state connectivity, contributes to increased risk for PTSD symptoms fo

Intersectional discrimination, identity conflict, and posttraumatic stress symptoms among bisexual+ people of color.

Bisexual and other multigender-attracted (e.g., pansexual, queer) people (bi+) report disproportionately high posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) linked to a high frequency of discrimination and general trauma exposure. Bi+ people of color (POC) may be particularly vulnerable to PTSS given exposure to intersectional discrimination (e.g., LGBTQ+ racism, racial/ethnic heterosexism). Identity conflict (i.e., perceived incongruence between one's sexual and racial/ethnic identities) may link intersectional discrimination to PTSS. Using cross-sectional survey data from 295 bi+ POC (Mage = 27.6 year
