BACKGROUND: Both inflammatory and remodelling processes are associated with irreversible airway obstruction observed in severe asthma. Our aim was to characterize a group of severe asthmatic patients with or without persistent airway obstruction in relation to specific sputum inflammatory and remodelling biomarkers.
METHODS: Forty-five patients under regular high-dose inhaled corticosteroid/ß-2agonist treatment were studied, after a follow-up period of at least 2 years, with a minimum of 4 visits. Periostin, TGF-ß, RANTES, IL-8, GM-CSF, FGF-2, and cell counts were measured in induced sputum.

AIM: To investigate the effect of mechanical stress on periostin and semaphorin-3A expression in a murine model of postmenopausal osteoporosis and in osteoblast-like MC3T3-E1 cells.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Female mice were divided into three groups and treated with a sham operation, ovariectomy (OVX) or OVX plus treadmill training (OVX+Run). After 10 weeks, tibias were used for histological analysis. MC3T3-E1 cells were burdened by mechanical stress using a centrifuge or were treated with periostin, and the production of biologically-active semaphorin-3A was examined in vitro.

In addition to main types of fibrosis, other types of fibrosis in incredible diseases have been reported. Among them, liver fibrosis, stroke, and rhinosinusitis are described as new cases of periostin action. OBJECTIVE: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury initiates a cascade of events often leading to osteoarthritis (OA). ACL reconstruction does not alter the course of OA, suggesting that heightened OA risk is likely due to factors in addition to the joint instability. We showed that torn ACL remnants express periostin (POSTN) in the acute phase of injury. Considering that ACL injury predisposes to OA and that POSTN is associated with cartilage metabolism, we hypothesize that ACL injury affects chondrocytes via POSTN.
