Photoperiod-mediated impairment of long-term potention and learning and memory in male white-footed mice.

Adult mammalian brains are capable of some structural plasticity. Although the basic cellular mechanisms underlying learning and memory are being revealed, extrinsic factors contributing to this plasticity remain unspecified. White-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) are particularly well suited to investigate brain plasticity because they show marked seasonal changes in structure and function of the hippocampus induced by a distinct environmental signal, viz., photoperiod (i.e. the number of hours of light/day). Compared to animals maintained in 16 h of light/day, exposure to 8 h of light/day f

Hepatic porphyria induced by the herbicide tralkoxydim in small mammals is species-specific.

Tralkoxydim is the active ingredient in a postemergent herbicide used in cereal crops. During preregistration trials, tralkoxydim was observed to cause hepatic porphyria and cholestasis in laboratory mice. Porphyria was not seen in similarly exposed rats or hamsters, but data were not collected regarding the susceptibility of any wild small mammal species to the tralkoxydim-induced porphyria. To address this data gap, we exposed small mammals to tralkoxydim, to 3,5-diethoxycarbonyl-1,4-dihydrocollidine (DDC; a known porphyrinogenic chemical), or to sunflower oil alone. We studied small mammal

Adult Offspring of Deer Mouse Breeding Pairs Selected for Normal and Compulsive-Like Large Nesting Expression Invariably Show the Same Behavior Without Prior In-Breeding.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a neuropsychiatric condition with notable genetic involvement. Against this background, laboratory-housed deer mice of both sexes varyingly present with excessive and persistent large nesting behavior (LNB), which has been validated for its resemblance of clinical compulsivity. Although LNB differs from normal nesting behavior (NNB) on both a biological and cognitive level, it is unknown to what extent the expression of LNB and NNB is related to familial background. Here, we randomly selected 14 NNB- and 14 LNB-expressing mice (equally distributed between sexes

Emergence of Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) in a Small Mammal Population in a Coastal Oak-Pine Forest, Maine, USA.

In the United States, surveillance has been key to tracking spatiotemporal emergence of blacklegged ticks [Ixodes scapularis Say (Ixodida:Ixodidae)] and their pathogens such as Borrelia burgdorferi Johnson, Schmid, Hyde, Steigerwalt & Brenner (Spirochaetales: Spirochaetaceae), the agent of Lyme disease. On the Holt Research Forest in midcoastal Maine, collection of feeding ticks from live-trapped small mammal hosts allowed us to track the emergence and establishment of I. scapularis, 1989-2019. From 1989-1995, we collected only I. angustus Neumann (Ixodida: Ixodidae)(vole tick), Dermacentor va

Plague-Positive Mouse Fleas on Mice Before Plague Induced Die-Offs in Black-Tailed and White-Tailed Prairie Dogs.

Plague is a lethal zoonotic disease associated with rodents worldwide. In the western United States, plague outbreaks can decimate prairie dog (Cynomys spp.) colonies. However, it is unclear where the causative agent, Yersinia pestis, of this flea-borne disease is maintained between outbreaks, and what triggers plague-induced prairie dog die-offs. Less susceptible rodent hosts, such as mice, could serve to maintain the bacterium, transport infectious fleas across a colony, or introduce the pathogen to other colonies, possibly facilitating an outbreak. Here, we assess the potential role of two

Emergence of Ixodes scapularis and Borrelia burgdorferi, the Lyme disease vector and agent, in Ohio.

Lyme disease, the most common vector-borne disease in the United States, is caused by a tick-borne infection with Borrelia burgdorferi. Currently, Ohio is considered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to be non-endemic for Lyme disease. The low incidence of Lyme disease in this state was largely attributed to the absence of the transmitting vector, Ixodes scapularis, commonly known as the blacklegged tick. However, a tick surveillance program established by Ohio Department of Health indicated that the number of I. scapularis in Ohio had increased sharply in recent years, f

Development of repetitive behavior in a mouse model: roles of indirect and striosomal basal ganglia pathways.

Restricted repetitive behaviors (stereotypy, compulsions, rituals) are diagnostic for autism spectrum disorder and common in related neurodevelopmental disorders. Despite their prevalence in clinical populations, underlying mechanisms associated with the development of these behaviors remain poorly understood. We examined the role of the indirect basal ganglia pathway in the development of stereotypy using deer mice. We measured neuronal metabolic activity in the subthalamic nucleus (STN) and other relevant brain regions using cytochrome oxidase (CO) histochemistry at three developmental time-

Behavior-related alterations of striatal neurochemistry in a mouse model of stereotyped movement disorder.

Motor stereotypy is a common component of several developmental, genetic, and neuropsychiatric disorders. In animals, these behaviors can be induced or attenuated via pharmacological manipulation of specific neural loci comprising cortico basal ganglia-cortical feedback circuits, including the striatum. The present study employed the deer mouse model of spontaneous and persistent stereotypy to assess the involvement of several endogenous neurotransmitters and neuromodulators in mediating the expression of the stereotypic behaviors (i.e., repetitive hindlimb jumping) exhibited by these mice. Environmental enrichment: effects on stereotyped behavior and regional neuronal metabolic activity.

The present study evaluated whether environmental enrichment-related effects on the development of stereotyped behavior in deer mice were associated with alterations in neuronal metabolic activity. Deer mice were reared under either enriched or standard housing conditions for 60 days following weaning. All mice were then placed in automated photocell detectors and classified as either stereotypic or non-stereotypic. Neuronal metabolic activity was then assessed using cytochrome oxidase (CO) histochemistry. The results demonstrated that environmental enrichment significantly increased neuronal

Hypocretin in the nucleus accumbens shell modulates social approach in female but not male California mice.

The hypocretin (Hcrt) system modulates arousal and anxiety-related behaviors and has been considered as a novel treatment target for stress-related affective disorders. We examined the effects of Hcrt acting in the nucleus accumbens shell (NAcSh) and anterodorsal bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (adBNST) on social behavior in male and female California mice (Peromyscus californicus). In female but not male California mice, infusion of Hcrt1 into NAcSh decreased social approach. Weak effects of Hcrt1 on social vigilance were observed in both females and males. No behavioral effects of Hcrt1

Introduced and Native Haplotypes of Echinococcus multilocularis in Wildlife in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Recent detection of a European-type haplotype of the cestode Echinococcus multilocularis in a newly enzootic region in British Columbia prompted efforts to determine if this haplotype was present elsewhere in wildlife in western Canada. In coyote (Canis latrans) definitive hosts in an urban region in central Saskatchewan (SK), we found a single haplotype of E. multilocularis that was most similar to a haplotype currently established in the core of this parasite's distribution in Europe and to the European-type haplotype found in coyotes and a dog (Canis lupus familiaris) in British Columbia. A reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction assay of Borrelia burgdorferi 16S rRNA for highly sensitive quantification of pathogen load in a vector.

We developed a real-time quantitative detection assay for the pathogen Borrelia burgdorferi, a Lyme borreliosis (LB) agent, using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) with primers and probe for a Borrelia genus-specific region of 16S ribosomal RNA. The standard curve of the assay was linear by semi-log plot over more than five orders of magnitude, and the detection limit of the assay was one thousandth of a single cell of B. burgdorferi. The minimum target level for detection using the RT-PCR assay for 16S RNA was 40-fold lower than the RT-PCR assay for messenger RNA of osp

Safety of Brucella abortus strain RB51 in deer mice.

Brucella abortus strain RB51 is an approved brucellosis vaccine for use in cattle that may have potential as an oral vaccine for use in elk (Cervus elaphus) and/or bison (Bison bison). This study was designed to determine effects of strain RB51 on deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus), a nontarget species that could have access to treated baits in a field situation. In February 1994, 90 mice were orally dosed or intraperitoneally injected with 1 x 10(8) colony forming units strain RB51 and 77 controls were similarly dosed with sterile saline. At weekly intervals through early April 1994, 4 to 6 m

A mathematical model of the ecology of Lyme disease.

A mathematical model of enzootic Lyme-disease transmission in a natural focus is presented. This model is based on the life history of the vector tick Ixodes scapularis Say and the primary reservoir host Peromyscus leucopus. Using this model, the threshold condition for the disease to be able to invade a nonenzootic region is determined as a function of the various possible transmission chains operating throughout the year. These expressions show that the transmission chain in which ticks acquire the disease from mice in the fall and transmit it back to mice as nymphs in the spring is the most

Experimental infection of North American mammals with epidemic Venezuelan encephalitis virus.

Eighty-three wild mammals of ten species were inoculated with a first mouse passage level Venezuelan encephalitis (VE) virus isolated from south Texas in 1971 during the VE outbreak. Rodents were highly susceptible to VE infection and circulated VE virus at levels ranging from 10(7.7) to 10(11.5) suckling mouse intracranial lethal doses per ml for 2 to 4 days. These levels of virus could easily infect vector mosquitoes. Mortality was high in all species of rodents except Sigmodon hispidus, adult Neotoma micropus, and adult Peromyscus leucopus. Lagomorphs were susceptible to VE infection but ci

ABIOTIC AND DEMOGRAPHIC DRIVERS OF FLEA PARASITISM ON DEER MICE IN A RECOVERING MIXED-CONIFER FOREST A DECADE POSTFIRE.

With the intensity and frequency of wildfires increasing rapidly, the need to study the ecological effects of these wildfires is also growing. An understudied aspect of fire ecology is the effect fires have on parasite-host interactions, including ectoparasites that might be pathogen vectors. Although some studies have examined the impacts of fire on ticks, studies on other ectoparasites, including pathogen vectors, are rare. To help address this knowledge gap, we examined the abiotic and biotic factors that predict the likelihood and extent of parasitism of deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus)

Ehrlichiosis in children.

Ehrlichia are obligate intracellular bacteria that belong to the family Rickettsiaceae. Human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME) and human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) are the 2 ehrlichial diseases that are of greatest health concern in the United States. The agents causing HME and HGE are zoonotic pathogens requiring a mammalian reservoir and an arthropod vector. Differences in the geographic distribution of their tick vectors account for the concentration of HME in the South and southeastern United States and HGE in the Northeast and northern Midwest. Both infections have been reported in coast

The red-tailed hawk, Buteo jamaicensis, a native definitive host of Frenkelia microti (Apicomplexa) in North America.

Oral inoculation of prairie voles, Microtus ochrogaster, with coccidian sporocysts isolated from the feces of a red-tailed hawk, Buteo jamaicensis, in Kansas, USA, resulted in formation of Frenkelia microti (Apicomplexa: Sarcocystidae) tissue cysts in the brains of the voles. Five additional isolates of morphologically similar sporocysts collected from red-tailed hawks or other Buteo spp. in Kansas failed to result in detectable infections in rodents. These results are the first to verify that red-tailed hawks are natural definitive host in North America for F. microti.

Experimental leprosy with Mycobacterium lepraemurium in hairless mice (Mus musculus).

Forty-three homozygous albino hairless mice (Mus musculus) were inoculated intradermally on the head, back, sides and base of the tail with suspensions of lepromatous tissue containing numerous Mycobacterium lepraemurium (Hawaiian strain). Visible nodules were noted in all mice. These lepromatous nodules enlarged slowly and often merged with each other, covering up to two thirds of the dorsum. Several mice became blind during the course of the infection. All of the mice died or were killed 68 to 287 days following inoculation. Post-mortem examinations on representative mice showed, in addition
