Intra and peridomiciliary comparison of density, sex ratio and gonotrophic stage of Phlebotomus sergenti in an active anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis focus in Morocco.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania tropica represents a major public health problem due to its ability to spread into non-endemic areas by means of its vectors, and the associated dramatic psychosocial impact. The objective of this work was to compare the intra and extradomiciliary density, sex ratio and gonotrophic stage of sand flies from a recent active focus in Morocco. This field study is based on the need to optimize the effectiveness of control programs. Two different capture methods, CDC light traps and sticky traps, were used at two different times of the year, corresponding wi

Association of Phlebotomus guggisbergi with Leishmania major and Leishmania tropica in a complex transmission setting for cutaneous leishmaniasis in Gilgil, Nakuru county, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomus (Larroussius) guggisbergi is among the confirmed vectors for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) transmission in Kenya. This scarring and stigmatizing form of leishmaniasis accounts for over one million annual cases worldwide. Most recent CL epidemics in Kenya have been reported in Gilgil, Nakuru County, where the disease has become a public health issue. However, little is known about the factors that drive its transmission. Here, we sought to determine the occurrence, distribution and host blood feeding preference of the vectors, and to identify Leishmania species and infect

Morphometric and meristic characterization of Phlebotomus argentipes species complex in northern Sri Lanka: evidence for the presence of potential leishmaniasis vectors in the country.

The transmission of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is of public health concern in Sri Lanka. The parasite Leishmania donovani is reported to be the causative agent for CL in Sri Lanka. However there is no report on the vector of CL in the country. Phlebotomus argentipes sensu lato is the well known vector of L. donovani which causes visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in the nearby South India. The taxon Ph. argentipes previously reported to occur as a species complex comprising of two morphospecies namely A and B. The taxonomy of the Argentipes complex was reassessed recently and reported to have three

Measurement of recent exposure to Phlebotomus argentipes, the vector of Indian visceral Leishmaniasis, by using human antibody responses to sand fly saliva.

Antibody (IgG) responses to the saliva of Phlebotomus argentipes were investigated using serum samples from regions of India endemic and non-endemic for visceral leishmaniasis (VL). By pre-adsorbing the sera against the saliva of the competing human-biting but non-VL vector P. papatasi, we significantly improved the specificity of a P. argentipes saliva enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Using this method, we observed a statistically significant correlation between antibodies to P. argenitpes saliva and the average indoor density of female sand flies. Additionally, the method was able to detec

Visceral leishmaniasis on the Indian sub-continent: a multi-centre study of the costs of three interventions for the control of the sandfly vector, Phlebotomus argentipes.

The sandflies that transmit the parasites causing human visceral leishmaniasis (VL) can be controlled by several methods, including indoor residual spraying (IRS), the use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN) and ecological vector management (EVM). The financial costs of each of these three methods of sandfly control have recently been assessed and compared, in a multi-centre study based on the Indian sub-continent. In each of the four study sites (two in Nepal and one each in India and Bangladesh), 24 neighbourhoods were randomly selected in districts with high incidences of VL. The costs

[Effect of the irrigation and reclamation transformation of the Karshi Steppe on burrow sandflies of the genus Phlebotomus--vectors of the causative agent of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis].

Studies of land irrigation effect on Phlebotomus sandflies, carriers of Leishmania major (a zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis causative agent)--were performed for 15 field work periods, from 1967 to 1981, at 18 sites in various natural areas of the Karshi Steppe (Uzbek SSR). Over 43500 sandfly specimen were caught and identified. Regularities in sandfly number changes, first of all, that of Ph. papatasi, after irrigation were determined, with respect to various proximity of great gerbils' settlements, where sandflies breed in the irrigated fields. Well-drained sites situated higher than irrigat

An oviposition pheromone, hexadecanoic acid, found on the eggs of Phlebotomus papatasi from Central Tunisia, attracts gravid females and stimulates oviposition.

Phlebotomus papatasi is a vector of Leishmania major, the etiologic agent of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis, a disfiguring and debilitating disease. In this study, we identified fatty acids found on the exterior of eggs laid by female P. papatasi that could be potential oviposition pheromones. We tested the effect of different treatments on 1) the number of eggs laid and 2) the spatial distribution of eggs laid. The treatments included three quantities of eggs (80, 160 and 320), hexane extracts of 160 eggs, 160 eggs after being washed with hexane to remove any pheromones, and three concentra

Construction of a Novel DNA Vaccine Candidate encoding LmSTI1-PpSP42 Fusion Protein from Leishmania major and Phlebotomus papatasi against Cutaneous Leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a serious public health problem in many tropical countries. The infection is caused by a protozoan parasite of Leishmania genus transmitted by Phlebotominae sandflies. In the present study, we constructed a eukaryotic expression vector to produce a fusion protein containing LmSTI1 from Leishmania major (L. major) and PpSP42 from Phlebotomus papatasi (Ph. papatasi). In future studies we will test this construct as a DNA vaccine against zoonotic CL. METHODS: The nucleotide sequences encoding the LmSTI1 protein and a fragment encoding 79% of PpSP42 wer

The human immune response to saliva of Phlebotomus alexandri, the vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Iraq, and its relationship to sand fly exposure and infection.

BACKGROUND: Sand fly saliva exposure plays an important role in immunity against leishmaniasis where it has mostly been associated with protection. Phlebotomus (Ph.) alexandri transmits Leishmania (L.) infantum, the causative agent of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), in Iraq. Our group recently demonstrated that 20% of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) deployers had asymptomatic VL (AVL) indicative of prior infection by the parasite L. infantum. Little is known about Ph. alexandri saliva, and the human immune response to it has never been investigated. Here, we characterize the humoral and cellular im
