Computational models reveal intuitive physics and statistical cues separately contribute to the visual perception of liquids.

We are intimately familiar with liquids in our visual experience, yet the computational basis of liquid perception remains underexplored. This is an important knowledge gap because liquids, with their mutable shapes and complex intrinsic dynamics, differ remarkably from the commonly studied categories in computational vision, such as rigid objects or non-rigid solids. To understand the computational basis of liquid perception, we implemented different models of this ability and tested them in a new behavioral study. The models realize two distinct theoretical possibilities for the visual perce

From speed to watts: a physics-based model for estimating power output during professional cycling climbs.

BACKGROUND: Accurate quantification of mechanical power output is fundamental for performance analysis in road cycling. However, access to power meter data is often limited in research and applied contexts. The aim of the present study was to develop and validate a physics-based framework to estimate power outputs in professional cycling with publicly available data. METHODS: Performance data from professional cyclists who completed the uphill individual time trial to Peyragudes in the 2025 Tour de France were obtained from publicly available sources. Mean power output was estimated using a m

Real-Time Prediction of Hydrogen Explosions Involving Fuel Cell Vehicles Using a Physics-Informed Transformer Model.

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are being increasingly introduced as low-carbon transport systems. Nevertheless, unintended hydrogen release and ignition may still cause severe explosion hazards, especially in densely built urban settings. Conventional data-driven methods may have difficulty representing obstacle-induced spatial interactions and the transient development of explosion fields. To address this issue, this work develops a physics-informed Transformer framework for real-time prediction of hydrogen explosion scenarios associated with fuel cell vehicles. In this study, "physics-informed"

Labeled Numerical Phantom of Abdominal Wall for Wave-Physics-Based Ultrasound Imaging: Applications to Image Reconstruction.

The transabdominal ultrasound imaging requires acoustic wave propagation through the abdominal wall, which consists of a complex organization of tissue layers that degrade imaging of underlying organs such as the liver. A priori knowledge of the acoustic properties of this medium could enable adaptive imaging techniques, but the underlying ground-truth properties in a living patient are a fundamentally unknown quantity. Numerical simulations can offer a solution to this challenge by modeling the propagation of ultrasound imaging pulses in media with known acoustic properties and can therefore

Eliminating registration bias in synthetic CT generation using a physics-based simulation framework for pelvic anatomy.

Objective.Supervised synthetic computed tomography (sCT) generation from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) requires spatially registered training pairs, yet perfect registration between separately acquired scans is unattainable. This registration bias propagates into trained models and corrupts intensity-based evaluation, so higher benchmark scores may reward reproduction of registration artifacts over anatomical fidelity. We propose physics-based CBCT simulation for geometrically aligned training pairs by construction, with bias-robust geometric metrics.Approach.A framework simulated pelvi

Physics-based data augmentation to enhance deep learning performance in tropical cyclone and storm surge modelling.

Accurate modelling of tropical cyclones (TCs) is essential for reliable storm surge simulations, as TCs provide the primary external forcing. While deep learning models have demonstrated effectiveness in TC modelling, a challenge remains regarding the limited diversity of TCs in reanalysis data used for training-specifically, the scarcity of extreme TC events. This study proposes a physics-based data augmentation method that utilizes a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model to physically generate TCs lying beyond the range of reanalysis data. Subsequently, focusing on small-sized yet intense

A physics-informed decomposition network for carbon ion radiotherapy dose monitoring: a proof-of-concept study.

Objective.In-beam positron emission tomography (PET) provides a promising strategy for dose monitoring in carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT), but accurate dose prediction remains difficult due to the complex, nonlinear relationship between positron-emitter activity and physical dose deposition. This proof-of-concept study aimed to improve activity-to-dose mapping by developing decomposition-based deep learning frameworks with auxiliary physical supervision.Approach.Idealized Monte Carlo (MC) simulations were conducted on computed tomography (CT) phantoms from 18 non-small cell lung cancer patients

Combining Physics-Based Protein-DNA Energetics with Machine Learning to Predict Interpretable Transcription Factor-DNA Binding.

Transcription factors (TFs) are essential regulators of gene expression, and variations in their target DNA sequences due to altering TF-DNA binding affinity and specificity lead to diseases ranging from developmental disorders to cancer. Computational methods that integrate physics-based models with machine learning (ML) hold promise to accurately predict protein-DNA binding affinities while ensuring interpretability and generalizability. Here, we present an approach combining all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and Molecular Mechanics-Generalized Born Surface Area (MMGBSA) energy ca

From imaging to computational domains for physics-driven molecular biology simulations: Hindered diffusion in platelet masses.

When formed in vivo, murine hemostatic thrombi exhibit a heterogeneous architecture comprised of distinct regions of densely and sparsely packed platelets. In this study, we utilize high-resolution electron microscopy alongside machine learning and physics-based simulations to investigate how such clot microstructure impacts molecular diffusivity. We used Serial Block Face - Scanning Electron Microscopy (SBF-SEM) to image select volumes of hemostatic masses formed in a mouse jugular vein, producing high-resolution 2D images. Images were segmented using machine learning software (Cellpose), who

Clinical workload profile of medical physics professionals at particle therapy Centers: a National Survey in Japan.

The current research on staffing models is primarily focused on conventional external photon beam therapy, which predominantly involves using linear accelerators. This emphasizes the need for comprehensive studies to understand better and define specific particle therapy facilities' staffing requirements. In a 2022 survey of 25 particle therapy facilities in Japan with an 84% response rate, significant insights were obtained regarding workload distribution, defined as the product of personnel count and task time (person-minutes), for patient-related tasks and equipment quality assurance and qu

TomoGRAF: An X-ray physics-driven generative radiance field framework for extremely sparse view CT reconstruction.

OBJECTIVES: Computed tomography (CT) provides high spatial-resolution visualization of 3D structures for various applications. Traditional analytical/iterative CT reconstruction algorithms require hundreds of angular samplings, a condition may not be met practically for physical and mechanical limitations. Sparse view CT reconstruction has been proposed using constrained optimization and machine learning methods with varying success, less so for ultra-sparse view reconstruction. Neural radiance field (NeRF) is a powerful tool for reconstructing and rendering 3D natural scenes from sparse views

Functional and structural resilience assessment in urban drainage networks: a physics-guided graph-based surrogate model.

The first step in real-time management, optimal design, and retrofitting of urban drainage networks (UDNs) involves developing a model capable of rapidly and accurately assessing resilience under various failure scenarios. This study introduces a novel physics-guided approach based on graph theory as a surrogate model for resilience assessment, offering a computationally highly efficient alternative to traditional hydrodynamic models such as the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). Given the study's focus on resilience evaluation, only the maximum flow of subcatchments was used as input for th

Operator learning for urban water clarification hydrodynamics and particulate matter transport with physics-informed neural networks.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can be a powerful tool for higher-fidelity water infrastructure planning and design. Despite decades of development and demonstration over a wide range of water systems such as clarification basins, activated sludge processes, ozone contactors, etc., CFD remains primarily used in academic research, with limited application in civil and environmental engineering practice. This limitation is contributed by its higher computational cost and demand for specialized user skills. This, however, need not be the case, if a robust and efficient surrogate model can be d

Cognitive-perceptual traits associated with autism and schizotypy influence use of physics during predictive visual tracking.

Schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can disrupt cognition and consequently behaviour. Traits of ASD and the subclinical manifestation of schizophrenia called schizotypy have been studied in healthy populations with overlap found in trait profiles linking ASD social deficits to negative schizotypy and ASD attention to detail to positive schizotypy. Here, we probed the relationship between subtrait profiles, cognition and behaviour, using a predictive tracking task to measure individuals' eye movements under three gravity conditions. A total of 48 healthy participants tracked an on-

MLRNet: Combining the Physics-Motivated Potential Models with Neural Networks for Intermolecular Potential Energy Surface Construction.

A physics-based machine learning model called MLRNet has been developed to construct the high-accuracy two-body intermolecular potential energy surface (IPES). The outputs of the neural network are integrated into the physically realistic Morse/long-range (MLR) function, which ensures that the MLRNet has meaningful extrapolation at both short and long ranges and solves the asymptotic problem in common neural network potential (NNP) models. The neural network representation of the MLR parameters is more flexible and more efficient than the polynomial expansion in the conventional mdMLR model, e

Operator's Influence on Contrast Agent Intravasation During Hysterosalpingo-Contrast Sonography: Explanation Based on a Physics Model.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the risk factors of the operators on contrast agent intravasation during hysterosalpingo-contrast sonography (HyCoSy). METHODS: We retrospectively collected 399 infertile women who underwent HyCoSy by the same sonographer. These patients were divided into two groups according to the way how the assistants connected the syringe to the uterus radiography catheter to inject the contrast agent. We analyzed whether the use of different contrast bolus injection methods had any influence on the incidence of intravasation during HyCoSy. RESULTS: There was no significant differe

Predicting gait adaptations due to ankle plantarflexor muscle weakness and contracture using physics-based musculoskeletal simulations.

Deficits in the ankle plantarflexor muscles, such as weakness and contracture, occur commonly in conditions such as cerebral palsy, stroke, muscular dystrophy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, and sarcopenia. While these deficits likely contribute to observed gait pathologies, determining cause-effect relationships is difficult due to the often co-occurring biomechanical and neural deficits. To elucidate the effects of weakness and contracture, we systematically introduced isolated deficits into a musculoskeletal model and generated simulations of walking to predict gait adaptations due to these d

Physics, chemistry, and Hirshfeld surface analyses of gamma-irradiated thalidomide to evaluate behavior under sterilization doses.

Thalidomide was indicated as a sedative and antiemetic and prescribed for pregnant women. Its tragic teratogenic effects culminated in withdrawal from the market. Since the discovery of its anti-angiogenic and anti-inflammatory actions, thalidomide has been used in the treatment of leprosy and multiple myeloma, which justify studies of its stability. We investigated the effects of irradiation of thalidomide up to 100 kGy (fourfold the usual sterilizing dose for pharmaceutics). The β polymorph of thalidomide was obtained in an isothermal experiment at 270 °C. All samples underwent gamma irradia

The Soul, as an Uninhibited Mental Activity, is Reduced into Consciousness by Rules of Quantum Physics.

This paper is an effort to describe, in neuroscientific terms, one of the most ambiguous concepts of the universe-the soul. Previous efforts to understand what the soul is and where it may exist have accepted the soul as a subjective and individual entity. We will make two additions to this view: (1) The soul is a result of uninhibited mental activity and lacks spatial and temporal information; (2) The soul is an undivided whole and, to become divided, the soul has to be reduced into unconscious and conscious mental events. This reduction process parallels the maturation of the frontal cortex

The AAPM/RSNA physics tutorial for residents. MR imaging safety considerations. Radiological Society of North America.

Experience and research over the past decade have demonstrated that diagnostic magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is a biologically safe imaging modality. Specifically, there is currently no convincing evidence that there is any long-term or irreversible biologic effects associated with the radiation and magnetic fields used in MR imaging, specifically radio-frequency (RF) radiation, static magnetic fields, and time-varying gradient fields. However, numerous hazards of MR imaging do exist that can cause severe injuries or even death. These hazards are primarily the result of (a) strong magnetic f
