Beyond colour perception: auditory-visual synaesthesia induces experiences of geometric objects in specific locations.

Our brain constantly integrates signals across different senses. Auditory-visual synaesthesia is an unusual form of cross-modal integration in which sounds evoke involuntary visual experiences. Previous research primarily focuses on synaesthetic colour, but little is known about non-colour synaesthetic visual features. Here we studied a group of synaesthetes for whom sounds elicit consistent visual experiences of coloured 'geometric objects' located at specific spatial location. Changes in auditory pitch alter the brightness, size, and spatial height of synaesthetic experiences in a systematic

Decoding expectation and surprise in dementia: the paradigm of music.

Making predictions about the world and responding appropriately to unexpected events are essential functions of the healthy brain. In neurodegenerative disorders, such as frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer's disease, impaired processing of 'surprise' may underpin a diverse array of symptoms, particularly abnormalities of social and emotional behaviour, but is challenging to characterize. Here, we addressed this issue using a novel paradigm: music. We studied 62 patients (24 female; aged 53-88) representing major syndromes of frontotemporal dementia (behavioural variant, semantic variant pri

The effects of prior cognitive control task exposure on responses to emotional tasks in healthy participants.

BACKGROUND: Recent advances have been made in the application of cognitive training strategies as interventions for mental disorders. One novel approach, cognitive control training (CCT), uses computer-based exercises to chronically increase prefrontal cortex recruitment. Activation of prefrontal control mechanisms have specifically been identified with attenuation of emotional responses. However, it is unclear whether recruitment of prefrontal resources alone is operative in this regard, or whether prefrontal control is important only in the role of explicit emotion regulation. This study exa

Formant frequency discrimination with a fine structure sound coding strategy for cochlear implants.

Recent sound coding strategies for cochlear implants (CI) have focused on the transmission of temporal fine structure to the CI recipient. To date, knowledge about the effects of fine structure coding in electrical hearing is poorly charactarized. The aim of this study was to examine whether the presence of temporal fine structure coding affects how the CI recipient perceives sound. This was done by comparing two sound coding strategies with different temporal fine structure coverage in a longitudinal cross-over setting. The more recent FS4 coding strategy provides fine structure coding on typ

Trunk sway measurements during stance and gait tasks in Parkinson's disease.

To achieve a unified assessment of postural instability in Parkinson's disease (PD) over a range of clinical stance and gait tasks, which may provide an insight into a tendency to fall, we measured trunk sway in the anterior-posterior and medial-lateral directions in freely moving PD patients and age-matched controls. We also measured task duration as time to complete the task or time to loss of balance. Patients had larger amplitudes of trunk sway velocities for stance tasks (e.g. mean pitch velocity when standing on two-legs eyes closed equalled 19.1 +/- 6.4 for PD patients on medication ver

Pressure-flow measurements for selected nasal sound segments produced by normal children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this prospective study was to: (1) report simultaneous oral-nasal pressures, nasal airflow rates, and velopharyngeal orifice areas for nasal sounds produced by children and adolescents; (2) determine whether data could be statistically classified by age, sex, or utterance type; and (3) provide guidelines for determining typical from atypical productions. PARTICIPANTS: The study involved 56 subjects, with two boys and two girls representing each age from 5 to 18 years. Subjects had no history of speech therapy, were judged as having normal speech and resonance at the

Notched audiograms and noise exposure history in older adults.

OBJECTIVE: Using data from a population-based cohort study, we compared four published algorithms for identifying notched audiograms and compared their resulting classifications with noise exposure history. DESIGN: Four algorithms: (1) , (2) , (3) , and (4) were used to identify notched audiograms. Audiometric evaluations were collected as a part of the 10-yr follow-up examinations of the Epidemiology of Hearing Loss Study, in Beaver Dam, WI (2003-2005, N = 2395). Detailed noise exposure histories were collected by interview at the baseline examination (1993-1995) and updated at subsequent vi

Replicative age differentially predicts metabolic competence across industrial yeasts at single-cell resolution.

In industrial yeast fermentations, population-level viability assays routinely report healthy cultures even as aged, metabolically compromised mother-cell subpopulations go undetected. Replicative age contributes to this hidden heterogeneity, but its link to a cell's metabolic competence has been difficult to measure simultaneously in the same cell by high-throughput flow cytometry. Here, we introduce a dual-parameter flow cytometry workflow combining bud-scar labeling with a recombinant His6-SUMO-mCherry-chitin-binding domain fusion protein (∼610 nm emission) and 5(6)-carboxyfluorescein diace

Tinnitus Affects Endogenous But Not Exogenous Auditory Attention Orienting.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have demonstrated that people with tinnitus show attention dysfunctions. In this study, we investigated the influence of tinnitus on attention orienting, especially whether the ability of attention orienting could be modulated by the degree of tinnitus. METHOD: Fifty-nine and 54 unilateral tinnitus participants were included in Experiment 1 and Experiment 2, respectively. All participants reported subjective tinnitus for at least 3 months and were divided into a mild tinnitus group (Tinnitus Handicap Inventory [THI] < 37) or a moderate to severe tinnitus group (THI ≥

Two cases of selective developmental voice-recognition impairments.

Recognizing other individuals is an essential skill in humans and in other species. Over the last decade, it has become increasingly clear that person-identity recognition abilities are highly variable. Roughly 2% of the population has developmental prosopagnosia, a congenital deficit in recognizing others by their faces. It is currently unclear whether developmental phonagnosia, a deficit in recognizing others by their voices, is equally prevalent, or even whether it actually exists. Here, we aimed to identify cases of developmental phonagnosia. We collected more than 1,000 data sets from sel

From Spectral Resolution to Speech Perception: A Review of Findings in Postlingually Deafened Adult Cochlear Implant Listeners.

PURPOSE: Reduced spectral resolution limits speech recognition in cochlear implant (CI) listeners. Although many studies have examined this association, uncertainties remain regarding its strength and contributing methodological and clinical factors. This narrative review synthesizes findings from studies of postlingually deafened adult CI listeners, focusing on psychophysical measures of spectral resolution and their strengths and limitations. METHOD: We reviewed studies published through January 2025 that examined the relationship between psychophysical measures of spectral resolution and s

Evaluation of Functional Impacts of Vision Impairment: Progress, Challenges and Future Directions.

Vision impairment has profound consequences for everyday functioning and quality of life. This review summarises recent evidence on the impact of vision impairment in three functional domains: mobility and falls risk, driving, and the interaction between vision impairment and hearing. Individuals with vision impairment often adopt more cautious gait and visual search behaviours; however, they remain less stable and at increased falls risk, dependent on the type and severity of vision impairment. Wearable technologies enable continuous measurement of movement in naturalistic settings. Future re

[The talometatarsal-index  ("TMT-Index") : A valuable X-ray parameter for differentiating between normal feet and planovalgus deformity in children and adolescents].

INTRODUCTION: The development of the shape of the shape from childhood to adulthood is a complex continuum. Deviations from this process occur frequently and, especially in asymptomatic patients, do not always include the need for therapeutic intervention. In the current S2-guideline on the juvenile flexible flatfoot, established x‑ray parameters for assessing the flatfoot deformity were judged to be sensitive, whereby no statement was made regarding the value of the parameters among themselves. The aim of the present work is to assess the talometatarsal Index (TMTInd) in comparison to establi

Obligatory and facultative brain regions for voice-identity recognition.

Recognizing the identity of others by their voice is an important skill for social interactions. To date, it remains controversial which parts of the brain are critical structures for this skill. Based on neuroimaging findings, standard models of person-identity recognition suggest that the right temporal lobe is the hub for voice-identity recognition. Neuropsychological case studies, however, reported selective deficits of voice-identity recognition in patients predominantly with right inferior parietal lobe lesions. Here, our aim was to work towards resolving the discrepancy between neuroima

Excitation of ultrasonic Lamb waves using a phased array system with two array probes: phantom and in vitro bone studies.

Long bones are good waveguides to support the propagation of ultrasonic guided waves. The low-order guided waves have been consistently observed in quantitative ultrasound bone studies. Selective excitation of these low-order guided modes requires oblique incidence of the ultrasound beam using a transducer-wedge system. It is generally assumed that an angle of incidence, θi, generates a specific phase velocity of interest, co, via Snell's law, θi=sin(-1)(vw/co) where vw is the velocity of the coupling medium. In this study, we investigated the excitation of guided waves within a 6.3-mm thick b

Partial withdrawal of deeply inserted cochlear electrodes: observations of two patients.

Three patients implanted in our department received the preformed Clarion S-Series cochlear implant with the electrode Positioning System (EPS). The EPS is a device designed to bring the electrode array closer to the modiolus and deeper into the cochlea. Two of these patients still complained because they were perceiving too low pitch sounds, and because of the presence of echoes and poor discrimination after 3 years of implant use and many tuning sessions. We hypothesized that the electrode array was too deeply inserted and could be stimulating overlapping populations of neurons in the low fr

Mozart, Mozart Rhythm and Retrograde Mozart Effects: Evidences from Behaviours and Neurobiology Bases.

The phenomenal finding that listening to Mozart K.448 enhances performance on spatial tasks has motivated a continuous surge in promoting music education over the past two decades. But there have been inconsistent reports in previous studies of the Mozart effect. Here conducted was a systematic study, with Mozart and retrograde Mozart music, Mozart music rhythm and pitch, behaviours and neurobiology tests, rats and humans subjects. We show that while the Mozart K.448 has positive cognitive effects, the retrograde version has a negative effect on rats' performance in the Morris water maze test

Immunological responses in acute low-tone sensorineural hearing loss and Ménière's disease.

OBJECTIVE: The autoimmune response appears to play an important role in some types of acute sensorineural hearing loss. Endolymphatic hydrops associated with fluctuating hearing loss has also been suggested to be caused by an immunological mechanism. Acute low-tone hearing loss (ALHL) associated with Ménière's disease (MD) is characterized by fluctuating hearing loss, and its etiology is thought to involve endolymphatic hydrops. The aim of this study was to attempt to determine the etiology of ALHL in MD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A flow cytometer was used to analyze intracellular cytokine levels

Speech disorders reflect differing pathophysiology in Parkinson's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy and multiple system atrophy.

Although speech disorder is frequently an early and prominent clinical feature of Parkinson's disease (PD) as well as atypical parkinsonian syndromes (APS) such as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and multiple system atrophy (MSA), there is a lack of objective and quantitative evidence to verify whether any specific speech characteristics allow differentiation between PD, PSP and MSA. Speech samples were acquired from 77 subjects including 15 PD, 12 PSP, 13 MSA and 37 healthy controls. The accurate differential diagnosis of dysarthria subtypes was based on the quantitative acoustic analysi
