Standardization and anti-inflammatory activity of aqueous extract of Psittacanthus plagiophyllus Eichl. (Loranthaceae).

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE: The hemiparasitic species Psittacanthus plagiophyllus Eichl. (Loranthaceae), also known as erva de passarinho, is used in folk medicine in the Santarém region in the state of Pará, Brazil, to treat gastritis and a variety of inflammatory disorders. In view of the lack of pharmacological studies on this species in the literature and the fact that it is used constantly by the local population, this study sought to standardize the extract of the leaves of P. plagiophyllus (AEPp) and to assess its anti-inflammatory potential in in vivo tests. MATERIAL AND METHODS:

Cytotoxicity of propolis nanopreparations in cancer cell monolayers: multimode of action including apoptotsis and nitric oxide production.

Natural products are invaluable resource of anticancer drug discovery. They generally viewed as safe but weak, within the framework of nanotechnology, they can serve as template for potent anticancer drugs. We first evaluated the cytotoxic activity of different propolis extracts (water, 70% ethanol, absolute ethanol and hexane) in many cancer cell lines, then the solid nanoparticles from the organic solvent extracts were prepared and their cytotoxicity was evaluated as well. Finally, 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) and 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC) liposome

Fate of sulfamethoxazole in wetland sediment under controlled redox conditions.

Redox condition is an important controlling factor for contaminant removal in constructed wetlands; however, the redox-sensitivity of antibiotic removal in wetland sediments under controlled conditions with specific electron acceptors remains unclear. Here, using a 14C radioactive tracer, we explored fate of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in a wetland sediment slurry under oxic, nitrate-reducing, iron-reducing, and methanogenic conditions. In the sterile treatment, unlike the comparable SMX dissipation from the water phase under four redox conditions, non-extractable residues (NERs) of SMX was highest

Milonine, a Morphinandienone Alkaloid, Has Anti-Inflammatory and Analgesic Effects by Inhibiting TNF-α and IL-1β Production.

Milonine is a morphinandienone alkaloid from Cissampelos sympodialis Eichl (Menispermaceae), a plant used in Brazil to treat inflammatory disorders. In this study, we evaluated the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity of milonine (MIL) by using classical experimental models of inflammation and nociception. The results showed that MIL reduced the paw edema formation induced by lipopolysaccharide, prostaglandin E2, and bradykinin, without interfering with the serotonin-induced edema. With respect to the nociception experiments, MIL decreased the exudate into the peritoneum induced by acetic

Cytology and fluid analysis of the acute abdomen.

In patients with acute abdominal pain, abdominal paracentesis and diagnostic peritoneal lavage often yield fluid samples for cytologic and biochemical evaluation. Cytology of the effusion from a patient with acute abdominal disease can be a crucial tool for the rapid diagnosis necessary for initiation of timely and appropriate therapy. Appropriate sample collection, handling, and preparation are essential to obtain an accurate diagnosis. Analysis of the fluid sample should include gross examination of the effusion, measurement of total nucleated cell count, packed red blood cell volume, and pr

Primary Cutaneous Nocardiosis (Lymphangitic Type) in an Immunocompetent Patient: A Case Report.

Cutaneous nocardiosis is an uncommon bacterial infection caused by Nocardia spp.; Nocardia brasiliensis is the agent involved in most cases. This infection is acquired through the direct traumatic inoculation of soil, plants, or other substrates where the bacteria are found. Clinically, it usually manifests as an erythematous ulcerated nodule. In one-third of cases, nodules or gummas are distributed over the lymphatic pathways that resemble lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis. Its manifestations vary and can present acutely or more frequently with a latent clinical picture over time. Diagnosis is e

First Report of Soybean Neocosmospora Stem Rot Caused by Neocosmospora vasinfecta var. vasinfecta in China.

During October 2009, the occurrence of a disease on soybean (Glycine max) was observed in several fields in Boluo County and Zengcheng City, Guangdong Province. Top leaves of infected plants initially turned yellow and plants eventually were defoliated, while stems and roots became black and rotted. The stem lesions sometimes extended 10 to 15 cm upward from the soil surface. Orange-to-brown spherical fruiting bodies, which were very similar with those of the soybean red crown rot pathogen, scattered or congregated on the stem lesions. Plants with symptoms were sampled from fields. Fruiting bo

Antifungal potential of Brazilian green and brown propolis against clinically relevant yeasts.

Brazilian biodiversity is rich in compounds with biological potential. Propolis is a natural product formed from bee saliva and plant exudates. Brazilian brown and green propolis exhibit antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and antiparasitic activities. These properties arise from their rich phenolic content; molecules such as artepellin-C, quercetin, and kaempferol are important phenolic biomolecules described in propolis. The objective of this study was to determine the antifungal activity and chemical parameters of brown and green propolis samples commercialized in Santa Rita

Proteomic stable isotope probing with an upgraded Sipros algorithm for improved identification and quantification of isotopically labeled proteins.

BACKGROUND: Proteomic stable isotope probing (SIP) is used in microbial ecology to trace a non-radioactive isotope from a labeled substrate into de novo synthesized proteins in specific populations that are actively assimilating and metabolizing the substrate in a complex microbial community. The Sipros algorithm is used in proteomic SIP to identify variably labeled proteins and quantify their isotopic enrichment levels (atom%) by performing enrichment-resolved database searching. RESULTS: In this study, Sipros was upgraded to improve the labeled protein identification, isotopic enrichment qu

Chlamydiosis in farmed chickens in Slovakia and zoonotic risk for humans.

INTRODUCTION: Chlamydia psittaci is an obligate intracellular Gram-negative bacterium causing respiratory disease (chlamydiosis) or asymptomatic carriage in poultry. In humans, it is a zoonotic agent of ornithosis/psittacosis. Due to low awareness of the disease and variable clinical presentation, psittacosis is often remains unrecognised as such by general practitioners. Zoonotic transfer occurs through inhalation of contaminated aerosols, and originates from feathers, faecal material and respiratory tract exudates. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate chickens for the presenc

Portuguese propolis disturbs glycolytic metabolism of human colorectal cancer in vitro.

BACKGROUND: Propolis is a resin collected by bees from plant buds and exudates, which is further processed through the activity of bee enzymes. Propolis has been shown to possess many biological and pharmacological properties, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, immunostimulant and antitumor activities. Due to this bioactivity profile, this resin can become an alternative, economic and safe source of natural bioactive compounds.Antitumor action has been reported in vitro and in vivo for propolis extracts or its isolated compounds; however, Portuguese propolis has been little explored. The aim

Construction of an ideotype root system architecture of subsurface flow constructed wetland macrophytes by vertical spatial stress: strengthening of rhizosphere effects and determination of appropriate substrate depth.

Strengthening rhizosphere effects to enhance pollutant removal is a hotspot of constructed wetlands (CWs) research in recent years, and improving the root traits and metabolic capacity of macrophytes is crucial for strengthening rhizosphere effects. In the field experiment, two types of subsurface flow (SSF) CWs (CW10 and CW20, with substrate depths of 10 and 20 cm, respectively) under the vertical spatial stress of roots (VSSR) and two types of non-VSSR SSF CWs (CW40 and CW60) were adopted with Typha orientalis as cultivated plants to investigate the variability of root development, metabolis

New chromatographic and data evaluation approaches for the comprehensive investigation of metal-phytosiderophore-complex dynamics.

BACKGROUND: Phytosiderophores (PS) are root exudates released by graminaceous plants that play a crucial role in micronutrient acquisition. This is particularly relevant for iron, but PS can also complex other transition metals in the rhizosphere, influencing their bioavailability and uptake. However, characterizing intact metal-PS complexes remains analytically challenging, and studies have largely relied on targeted approaches using a limited number of selected PS. RESULTS: We developed a liquid chromatography electrospray ionization high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) workflow usin
