Viewpoint on Crossmodal Neural Plasticity.

Crossmodal neural plasticity, the brain's ability to adapt in response to sensory deprivation, serves as a primary model for understanding the multifaceted interplay between intrinsic neurobiological constraints and environmental experience in brain development. In this viewpoint, Olivier Collignon and Ella Striem-Amit engage in a collaborative dialogue exploring the fundamental principles of brain organization in individuals born with blindness, deafness, or without hands. The discussion evaluates current shifts in the field, including the move toward high-resolution neuroimaging, deep data a

Plasticity and yielding of soft matter.

This review examines and compares two transitions characteristic of soft matter: solid-to-solid and solid-to-liquid transitions. The first, a transition from an elastic (or viscoelastic) state to plastic deformation, has rarely been associated with soft matter, although it is well known for various solids, such as soft metals and rocks. The second type of transition is typical for colloidal systems. It is characteristic of multicomponent compositions belonging to the class of yielding liquids. This phenomenon consists of a transition from a gel-like (solid-like) state to a relatively low-visco

Neural Plasticity in Migraine Chronification.

Chronic migraine (CM) is the ultimate and most burdensome form of the transformation from episodic migraine (EM), called chronification. The mechanism behind migraine chronification is poorly known and difficult to explore as CM has the same spectrum of pathogenesis as EM and the EM-CM transition is bidirectional. Central sensitization (CS) is a key phenomenon in migraine: its mechanisms include disturbed neural plasticity, which is the ability of the nervous system to adapt to endo- and exogenous changes. Cutaneous allodynia, a maker of central sensitization, may be an easy-to-determine marke

Photothermal Revolution in Plastic Upcycling.

ConspectusPlastics, a cornerstone of modern civilization, have profoundly transformed numerous aspects of contemporary life. However, their large-scale production and consumption have resulted in severe and unsustainable ecological pressure. The continuous accumulation of plastic waste worldwide, exacerbated by inadequate or inefficient recycling infrastructures, poses a growing threat to fragile ecosystems and has escalated into a global environmental crisis. Conventional recycling methods often entail energy-intensive processes, with further limitations arising from suboptimal efficiency and

Muscle Plasticity, Adaptation and Epigenetics.

Muscle was one of the first tissues in which substantial phenotypic adaptation of fully differentiated adult cells was demonstrated. The control of gene expression, and therefore the nature of the proteome, is under the control of external influences, including hormonal signals, but most remarkably, allows the muscle fibre to adapt to the accustomed pattern of activity. When that pattern of activity changes in terms of daily amount or pattern, the muscle fibres change to accommodate the required activity. If daily activity increases, then the mechanisms of sustained energy supply are enhanced,

Exosomes in Facial Plastic Surgery.

Exosomes have emerged as a promising therapeutic frontier in facial plastic surgery. Preclinical studies have demonstrated their ability to modulate wound healing, skin rejuvenation, hair growth, and nerve regeneration. Early clinical evidence suggests potential benefits in enhancing recovery after laser resurfacing, treating acne scars, and promoting hair growth. Despite their potential, there are currently no exosome products that are FDA-approved for medical use, and they should be considered experimental until receiving regulatory approval and robust clinical validation. As research advanc

Crossmodal plasticity in hearing loss.

Crossmodal plasticity is a textbook example of the ability of the brain to reorganize based on use. We review evidence from the auditory system showing that such reorganization has significant limits, is dependent on pre-existing circuitry and top-down interactions, and that extensive reorganization is often absent. We argue that the evidence does not support the hypothesis that crossmodal reorganization is responsible for closing critical periods in deafness, and crossmodal plasticity instead represents a neuronal process that is dynamically adaptable. We evaluate the evidence for crossmodal

Neurochemical Plasticity of the Carotid Body.

A striking feature of the carotid body (CB) is its remarkable degree of plasticity in a variety of neurotransmitter/modulator systems in response to environmental stimuli, particularly following hypoxic exposure of animals and during ascent to high altitude. Current evidence suggests that acetylcholine and adenosine triphosphate are two major excitatory neurotransmitter candidates in the hypoxic CB, and they may also be involved as co-transmitters in hypoxic signaling. Conversely, dopamine, histamine and nitric oxide have recently been considered inhibitory transmitters/modulators of hypoxic c

Sleep and homeostatic control of plasticity.

Sleep homeostasis is a complex neurobiologic phenomenon involving a number of molecular pathways, neurotransmitter release, synaptic activity, and factors modulating neural networks. Sleep plasticity allows for homeostatic optimization of neural networks and the replay-based consolidation of specific circuits, especially important for cognition, behavior, and information processing. Furthermore, research is currently moving from an essentially brain-focused to a more comprehensive view involving other systems, such as the immune system, hormonal status, and metabolic pathways. When dysfunction

Microsurgery Training in Plastic Surgery.

Advances in surgical instruments, magnification technology, perforator dissection techniques, and vascular imaging over the past decades have facilitated exponential growth in the field of microsurgery. With wide application potential including but not limited to limb salvage, breast reconstruction, lymphedema treatment, and sex affirmation surgery, microsurgery represents a critical skill set that powerfully augments the reconstructive armamentarium of plastic surgeons. Accordingly, microsurgical training is now a critical component of the plastic surgery residency education curriculum. Train

Enteric glia: Diversity or plasticity?

Glial cells of the enteric nervous system correspond to a unique glial lineage distinct from other central and peripheral glia, and form a vast and abundant network spreading throughout all the layers of the gastrointestinal wall. Research over the last two decades has demonstrated that enteric glia regulates all major gastrointestinal functions via multiple bi-directional crosstalk with enteric neurons and other neighboring cell types. Recent studies propose that enteric glia represents a heterogeneous population associated with distinct localization within the gut wall, phenotype and activit

Craniofacial plasticity in ancient Peru.

Numerous studies have utilized craniometric data to explore the roles of genetic diversity and environment in human cranial shape variation. Peru is a particularly interesting region to examine cranial variation due to the wide variety of high and low altitude ecological zones, which in combination with rugged terrain have created isolated populations with vastly different physiological adaptations. This study examines seven samples from throughout Peru in an effort to understand the contributions of environmental adaptation and genetic relatedness to craniofacial variation at a regional scale

Adaptive plasticity in the mouse mandible.

BACKGROUND: Plasticity, i.e. non-heritable morphological variation, enables organisms to modify the shape of their skeletal tissues in response to varying environmental stimuli. Plastic variation may also allow individuals to survive in the face of new environmental conditions, enabling the evolution of heritable adaptive traits. However, it is uncertain whether such a plastic response of morphology constitutes an evolutionary adaption itself. Here we investigate whether shape differences due to plastic bone remodelling have functionally advantageous biomechanical consequences in mouse mandibl
