[Transient global amnesia: A descriptive study of 12 Polynesian patients].

INTRODUCTION: According to the criteria of Hodges and Warlow, transient global amnesia is defined by sudden onset of isolated anterograde amnesia of spontaneous resolution within one to twenty-four hours. Its pathophysiological mechanisms are still uncertain. METHODS: In a retrospective study, we have analyzed epidemiological, clinical and MRI data from twelve patients admitted to the only neurological department of French Polynesia for transient global amnesia corresponding to the criteria of Hodges and Warlow between January 2010 and December 2013. RESULTS: The median age of the cohort was

Use of serum and blood samples on filter paper to improve the surveillance of Dengue in Pacific Island Countries.

BACKGROUND: In Pacific Island Countries (PICs) the epidemiology of dengue is characterized by long-term transmission of a single dengue virus (DENV) serotype. The emergence of a new serotype in one island country often indicates major outbreaks with this serotype will follow in other PICs. OBJECTIVES: Filter paper (FP) cards on which whole blood or serum from dengue suspected patients had been dried was evaluated as a method for transportation of this material by standard mail delivery throughout the Pacific. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty-two FP-dried whole blood samples collected from patients in Ne

Plasma concentrations of sVCAM-1 and severity of dengue infections.

Adhesion molecules are essential for the immune response. They are involved in the regulation of cell-to-cell contact, thereby enabling leukocytes to communicate. Circulating forms of adhesion molecules are found in the serum of healthy individuals. Raised levels have been associated with disease severity in HCV and other infections and thus appear to be good markers of endothelial damage. The levels of soluble Vascular Cell Adhesion Molecule-1 (sVCAM-1) and of sP and sL-selectin in the plasma of children hospitalised for dengue in French Polynesia were monitored. Studies from the 1996/1997 de

Lobosorchis labri n. sp. (Trematoda: Cryptogonimidae): a host switch from snappers (Lutjanidae) to wrasses (Labridae).

The first cryptogonimid trematode with adults parasitic in wrasses (Labriformes: Labridae) is proposed. Lobosorchis labri n. sp. was recovered at a substantial combined prevalence (63%, 15 of 24) from the thicklipped wrasses Hemigymnus melapterus (Bloch) and H. fasciatus (Bloch) at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia. Definitive hosts for all other Lobosorchis spp. are exclusively tropical snappers, Lutjanus spp. (Lutjaniformes: Lutjanidae). Novel material for Lobosorchis spp. collected from snappers is also reported, including for L. tibaldiae Miller & Cribb, 2005 and L. polygongylus Miller et a

Morphology and Phylogenetic Position of the Sargassum Nudibranch Scyllaea fulva Quoy & Gaimard, 1824 (Nudibranchia: Scyllaeidae): First Record in Hong Kong.

Scyllaeidae is a small group of nudibranchs comprising three genera (Scyllaea, Notobryon, and Crosslandia) with striking morphological similarities, making their identification challenging based on external features alone. Previous studies have highlighted the significance of central radular teeth in distinguishing Notobryon from Scyllaea and Crosslandia. The genus Scyllaea, commonly known as the sargassum nudibranch, currently consists of only two valid species, Scyllaea pelagica and Scyllaea fulva. These species inhabit seaweed Sargassum spp., feeding on hydroids. During a biodiversity surve

Evidence for ethnic tropism of Helicobacter pylori.

Helicobacter pylori infection in humans is linked to gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, and gastric cancer. Peptic ulcer disease, as distinct from chronic asymptomatic infection, is strongly associated with expression of bacterial virulence markers, including a major antigen, CagA, and the vacuolating cytotoxin VacA. We have previously described significant differences in colonization rates, independent of socioeconomic status, among ethnic groups in New Zealand. To evaluate relative risks for peptic ulcer disease, we examined the frequency of two virulence markers in H. pylori strains in

Lactose malabsorption in Polynesian and white children in the south west Pacific studied by breath hydrogen technique.

Lactose malabsorption was studied by a breath hydrogen technique in 139 Samoan and 68 white schoolchildren. The Samoans were studied in four locations, two in Western Samoa and two in New Zealand, and the white children in both the Cook Islands and New Zealand. The prevalence of malabsorption varied with location: for Samoans it ranged from 41% to 60% in Western Samoa and 0% to 35% in New Zealand; white children had rates of 27% in the Cook Islands and 5% in New Zealand. Environmental factors rather than genetic factors are likely to play the main part in initiating if not perpetuating lactose

TOUlouse TAhiTI Stroke Study (TOUTATIS): A comparative analysis of young pacific islanders with ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Incidence of stroke among young adults is on the rise worldwide. Inequities remain among minorities and little is known about stroke characteristics among young Pacific patients. French Polynesia (FP), located in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean, could provide insight into this problem. METHODS: Patients aged 18-54years consecutively treated for first-ever acute ischemic stroke in Tahiti, FP, from January 2022 to December 2023 were compared to a reference cohort enrolled from January 2017 to July 2021 in Toulouse, France. Patients' characteristics were recorded an

Antibiotic resistance patterns in fecal bacteria isolated from Christmas shearwater (Puffinus nativitatis) and masked booby (Sula dactylatra) at remote Easter Island.

Antibiotic use and its implications have been discussed extensively in the past decades. This situation has global consequences when antibiotic resistance becomes widespread in the intestinal bacterial flora of stationary and migratory birds. This study investigated the incidence of fecal bacteria and general antibiotic resistance, with special focus on extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) isolates, in two species of seabirds at remote Easter Island. We identified 11 species of bacteria from masked booby (Sula dactylatra) and Christmas shearwater (Puffinus nativitatis); five species of gram

Detection of Loa loa-specific DNA in blood from occult-infected individuals.

Accurate and specific diagnosis of human loiasis is of crucial importance in an endemic area where two-thirds of infected individuals are without circulating microfilariae (occult loiasis). By using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and specific primers to the repeat 3 region (15r3) of the gene coding for Loa loa 15-kDa polyprotein antigen, DNA was amplified from total blood lysate of occult-infected subjects. A 396-bp DNA fragment was specifically detected. We tested the specificity of this method by qualitative hybridization to PCR products using blood lysates of the following subjects: (1

[Study of hyperuricemia in Tahiti. 31 cases hospitalized at the Territorial Hospital Center in Papeete (Tahiti)].

Frequency of gout in French Polynesia has induced us to define a type of "hyperuricemia Polynesian" from a population of patients admitted in a general Medicine Ward. Each admitted patient gets immediately a blood check-up. A figure higher than 70 mg/l in male and 60 mg/l in female is considered as pathological. In such a case, uricemia and uraturia are tested every 24 h for three days and we consider the mean value of these three tests. On the other side, some admitted patients non-hyperuricemic, are examined according to the same protocol. So, we have two groups: 31 hyperuricemics and 20 non

Serological complications of a major ABO incompatible bone marrow transplantation in a Polynesian with aplastic anemia.

A 24-year-old, blood-group O Polynesian woman with multiple red blood cell antibodies received a group A, HLA-compatible, sex-matched bone marrow transplantation as treatment for severe aplastic anemia. High retransplantation titers of ABO isohemagglutinins were successfully reduced by repeated plasmaphereses. Despite gross in vitro incompatibility in the routine crossmatch, technetium-labelled red blood cell survival studies performed immediately prior to transplantation predicted that a small proportion of the donor erythrocytes would neutralize residual postplasmapheresis isoantibody. Donor

Cerebrovascular Disease Profiles of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities in South Western Sydney and New South Wales.

INTRODUCTION: Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities are growing globally. Understanding patterns of cerebrovascular disease in CALD communities may improve health outcomes through culturally specific interventions. We compared rates of transient ischaemic attack (TIA)/stroke (ischaemic stroke, intracerebral haemorrhage) and stroke risk factor prevalence in overseas and Australian-born people in South Western Sydney (SWS) and New South Wales (NSW). METHODS: This was a 10-year retrospective analysis (2011-2020) of SWS and NSW age-standardized rates per 100,000 person-years of

Zika Virus-Encoded NS2A and NS4A Strongly Downregulate NF-κB Promoter Activity.

Since Zika virus (ZIKV) was first detected in Uganda in 1947, serious outbreaks have occurred globally in Yap Island, French Polynesia and Brazil. Even though the number of infections and spread of ZIKV have risen sharply, the pathogenesis and replication mechanisms of ZIKV have not been well studied. ZIKV, a recently highlighted Flavivirus, is a mosquito-borne emerging virus causing microcephaly and the Guillain-Barre syndrome in fetuses and adults, respectively. ZIKV polyprotein consists of three structural proteins named C, prM and E and seven nonstructural proteins named NS1, NS2A, NS2B, N

Altered T cell memory and effector cell development in chronic lymphatic filarial infection that is independent of persistent parasite antigen.

Chronic lymphatic filarial (LF) infection is associated with suppression of parasite-specific T cell responses that persist even following elimination of infection. While several mechanisms have been implicated in mediating this T cell specific downregulation, a role for alterations in the homeostasis of T effector and memory cell populations has not been explored. Using multiparameter flow cytometry, we investigated the role of persistent filarial infection on the maintenance of T cell memory in patients from the filarial-endemic Cook Islands. Compared to filarial-uninfected endemic normals (

Capgras syndrome: possibly more common among the Maori of New Zealand.

OBJECTIVE: The report describes an apparently greater incidence of Capgras syndrome among the Maori population compared with the European population, in the most easterly catchment area served by Tauranga Hospital in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty. METHOD: Over the last year we have become aware of five cases of Capgras syndrome in our catchment area. This area (population nearly 21,000) consists of a rapidly expanding new suburb of the city of Tauranga and a rural area extending 55 km east of the city. These figures were compared with those of the westerly catchment area served by Tauranga Hosp

Dental caries prevalence in early Polynesians from the Hawaiian Islands.

We examined the skeletal remains of 1338 early Hawaiians (preserved in the Bishop Museum, Honolulu) to determine total caries and root surface caries prevalence. Specimens from seven islands were represented in the collection. Estimation of age at death was made by a combination of dental developmental staging for younger individuals and occlusal attrition and/or alveolar bone loss in adults. Museum records were also consulted for age estimation of adults which was primarily based on osteological criteria. The material was divided into six age groups. Predentate infants and edentulous adults w
