Meta-analysis of antimicrobial activity of Allium, Ocimum, and Thymus spp. confirms their promising application for increasing food safety.

Biopreservation strategies such as the use of Mediterranean plant extracts to ensure food safety are promising to deal with the emergence of antimicrobial resistances and the overreliance on food chemical additives. In the last few decades, antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) for evaluating the in vitro antibacterial potential of plant extracts against the most relevant foodborne pathogens has been widely reported in the literature. The current meta-analysis aimed to summarise and analyse the extensive evidence available in the literature regarding the in vitro antimicrobial capability

Development and standardization of a rapid, PCR-based method for the detection of Wuchereria bancrofti in mosquitoes, for xenomonitoring the human prevalence of bancroftian filariasis.

PCR has recently been studied as a promising tool for monitoring the progress of efforts to eliminate lymphatic filariasis. PCR can be used to test concurrently at least 30 pools, with as many as 40 mosquitoes in each pool, for the presence of filarial larvae. The SspI PCR assay for the detection of Wuchereria bancrofti DNA in pools of mosquitoes has been used since 1994 in a variety of laboratories worldwide. During that time, the original assay has been modified in these different laboratories and no standardized assay currently exists. In an effort to standardize and improve the assay, a me

Procalcitonin and presepsin for detecting bacterial infection and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in cirrhosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing bacterial infections (BI) in patients with cirrhosis can be challenging because of unclear symptoms, low diagnostic accuracy, and lengthy culture testing times. Various biomarkers have been studied, including serum procalcitonin (PCT) and presepsin. However, the diagnostic performance of these markers remains unclear, requiring further informative studies to ascertain their diagnostic value. AIM: To evaluate the pooled diagnostic performance of PCT and presepsin in detecting BI among patients with cirrhosis. METHODS: We performed a systematic search of the MEDLINE, EMB

DICER1 alterations in thyroid lesions: a systematic review and meta-analysis with clinicopathologic implications.

DICER1 is a key RNase III endoribonuclease involved in microRNA biogenesis and is implicated in both constitutional DICER1-related tumor predisposition and sporadic thyroid tumorigenesis. In thyroid pathology, DICER1 alterations have been reported across a broad spectrum of lesions, but their reported frequency and clinicopathologic significance vary substantially across published series. We performed a systematic review of thyroid-focused studies published between 2020 and 2025. Studies were included in the quantitative synthesis only if they provided an interpretable lesion-level numerator a

Prognostic value of circulating tumor DNA mutation panels to predict early recurrence and survival outcomes in early-stage breast cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Early-stage breast cancer (BC) shows heterogeneous recurrence risk. Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) is promising non-invasive biomarker for minimal residual disease and recurrence prediction, though prognostic performance varies by assay and context. METHODS: Eligible studies on ctDNA-based recurrence and survival were identified through comprehensive searches, quality assessed, and analyzed using random-effects meta-analysis to estimate pooled hazard ratios for clinical outcomes. Development of a high sensitivity RT-PCR assay for detection of SARS-CoV-2 in individual and pooled nasopharyngeal samples.

The COVID-19 pandemic requires sensitive detection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus from samples to ensure accurate detection of infected patients, an essential component of effective national track and trace programs. Due to the scaling challenges of large sample numbers, sample pooling is an attractive solution to reduce both extraction and amplification reagent costs, if high sensitivity can be maintained. We demonstrate that the Erba Molecular ErbaMDx SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR Kit (EM kit) delivers high sensitivity, achieving analytical detection of 5 copies/reaction SARS-CoV-2 genomic RNA, and 200 copies/

Global distribution of sporadic sapovirus infections: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE), characterized by diarrhea and vomiting, is an important cause of global mortality, accounting for 9% of all deaths in children under five years of age. Since the reduction of rotavirus in countries that have included rotavirus vaccines in their national immunization programs, other viruses such as norovirus and sapovirus have emerged as more common causes of AGE. Due to widespread use of real-time RT-PCR testing, sapovirus has been increasingly reported as the etiologic agent in both AGE outbreaks and sporadic AGE cases. We aimed to assess the role of sapovirus as

Validation of sample pooling for high-throughput RT-qPCR subtyping of avian influenza A(H5).

Highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) is a global health threat due to its high historical virulence and increasing mammalian host range, as demonstrated by the 2024-2025 outbreak among U.S. dairy cattle, with 71 confirmed human infections. While human-to-human transmission has not yet been documented, limited pre-existing human immunity, and uncertainty about evolutionary barriers to human infection make H5N1 a potential pandemic threat. Expanding testing capacity for H5N1 beyond its currently limited scope would be critical for response to potential outbreaks. Thus, we developed and vali

Comparative field analyses of rapid analyte measurement platform and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction assays for West Nile virus surveillance.

Rapid detection of West Nile virus (WNV) in mosquito pools is essential for predicting epizootics and epidemics. We compare the efficiency and sensitivity of the Rapid Analyte Measurement Platform (RAMP) to reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) from 2005 to 2008 from field mosquito populations in Mercer County, NJ. Overall, 316 pools tested negative and 115 pools tested positive for WNV. Eighty-nine pools tested positive using RAMP and all were confirmed by RT-PCR; 26 pools were WNV-negative using RAMP but positive using RT-PCR. False-positives from RAMP were not detected in

No evidence of practice effects on the phase adjustment task.

The Phase Adjustment Task (PAT) has been described as one of the most promising new methods for assessing cardiac interoceptive accuracy. However, the suitability of this method for longitudinal research remains underexplored. In particular, it remains unclear whether performance on this measure changes with repeated testing in the absence of feedback. To explore potential practice/disengagement effects, we pooled data from all participants who had completed the PAT on two occasions within a ~7-day period (N = 73). Results revealed no evidence of practice/disengagement effects on the PAT. Thes

Molecular evidence for trypanosomatids in Culex mosquitoes collected during a West Nile virus survey.

Adult mosquitoes were previously collected and tested for West Nile virus during an intense WNV outbreak in 2003-2004 along the Cache la Poudre River in Colorado, USA. A subset of these mosquitoes was also tested for infection with trypanosomatids using nested PCR to amplify 18S rRNA. Of the 69 pools of Culex pipiens that were screened for both pathogens, 4.3% were positive for WNV and 11.6% tested positive for trypanosomes; no pools were found to be co-infected with both pathogens. One hundred and forty-three pools of Culex tarsalis, considered to be the principal WNV vector in this area, wer

Artificial intelligence for predicting surgical difficulty in laparoscopic cholecystectomy: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Accurately predicting operative difficulty in laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is foundational to personalized surgical planning and patient safety assurance. However, the reliability, generalizability, and true clinical utility of current Artificial Intelligence (AI) models are currently unsubstantiated. This review aimed to evaluate the predictive performance and methodological quality of AI models designed to predict LC surgical difficulty. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception to March 2, 2026. The Prediction Model Risk

Metagenomic next-generation sequencing in blood culture-negative endocarditis: a structured review with illustrative pooled estimates.

BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis is a life-threatening cardiovascular infection with high morbidity and mortality. Identification of the causative microbial pathogen is essential for targeted antimicrobial treatment. Blood culture-negative endocarditis accounts for up to 30% of the cases and supplementary diagnostics (antigen, serology, histopathology, PCR, 16 S/18S) are unable to detect all pathogens. Recent sequencing-based diagnostics, including metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS), have been incorporated as adjunctive tools in the 2023 Duke-ISCVID criteria. METHODS: This is a s
