Reframing Intersectional Stigma for a South African Context Integrating Tuberculosis, HIV and Poverty Stigmas.

Intersectionality is closely intertwined with Black feminism within the context of the United States. As a result, intersectionality is often overlooked in non-Western contexts where racial homogeneity may reduce some of the impact of race on marginalization. This article will look at intersectional stigma from the South African context using the tuberculosis/HIV (TB/HIV) treatment environment in South Africa to exemplify intersectionality's versatility as an analytic method outside of the United States. We will use colonial history and contemporary research to reframe intersectionality consid

Poverty and health among CDC plantation labourers in Cameroon: Perceptions, challenges and coping strategies.

Creating better access to good quality healthcare for the poor is a major challenge to development. In this study, we examined inter-linkages between poverty and disease, referred to as poverty-related diseases (PRDs), by investigating how Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC) camp dwellers respond to diseases that adversely affect their health and wellbeing. Living in plantation camps is associated with poverty, overcrowding, poor sanitation and the rapid spread of diseases. In a survey of 237 CDC camp dwellers in Cameroon, we used the health belief model to understand the drivers (perceived

Poverty, dirt, infections and non-atopic wheezing in children from a Brazilian urban center.

BACKGROUND: The causation of asthma is poorly understood. Risk factors for atopic and non-atopic asthma may be different. This study aimed to analyze the associations between markers of poverty, dirt and infections and wheezing in atopic and non-atopic children. METHODS: 1445 children were recruited from a population-based cohort in Salvador, Brazil. Wheezing was assessed using the ISAAC questionnaire and atopy defined as allergen-specific IgE ≥ 0.70 kU/L. Relevant social factors, environmental exposures and serological markers for childhood infections were investigated as risk factors using

WAR as slogan, HAT as strategy: metaphorical construction of poverty alleviation in Chinese political discourse.

Political metaphors play a crucial role in shaping public perception and legitimizing policy, yet their use in China's poverty alleviation discourse remains underexplored. This study investigates the major conceptual metaphors in Chinese governmental discourse on poverty alleviation, drawing on a 33,104-word corpus compiled from official reports over the past decade. Following the Metaphor Identification Procedure VU University Amsterdam (MIPVU) procedure for metaphor identification, the study identifies four dominant source domains: WAR, PATH, COMPETITION, and HAT. Guided by Charteris-Black's

Poverty alleviation for people with severe mental health conditions in South Africa: A qualitative study.

People with severe mental health conditions (SMHC) and caregivers in South Africa often experience poverty. The PRIZE trial found that recovery groups were acceptable, feasible and potentially effective in reducing relapse. Addressing economic needs was identified as a means to increase impact. This study aimed to understand the acceptability of poverty alleviation interventions as an adjunct to psychosocial interventions. We conducted two focus group discussions and 12 in-depth interviews with 14 people with SMHC and 13 caregivers in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. ["To put it bluntly, you feel useless, worthless" : The invisibility and marginalization of seniors living in poverty].

BACKGROUND: Germany's means-tested basic income support in old age (Grundsicherung im Alter) often goes unclaimed; shame is considered a potential barrier. Little is known about how old age poverty is translated into a socially mediated judgment of how people have lived their lives and of their worth as persons. OBJECTIVE: The aim is to reconstruct this process and the social invisibility that emerges from it under social and institutional conditions. METHODS: Drawing on prior content analysis, the qualitative secondary analysis triangulates perspectives from 16 interviews with people aged 6

Long-term poverty, rurality, and geographic disparities in colorectal cancer: a spatial analysis in Texas.

PURPOSE: Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a leading cause of cancer morbidity and mortality in the United States and shows substantial geographic variation. Socioeconomically disadvantaged communities experience elevated CRC incidence, yet few studies have analyzed multi-decade poverty measures for long-term structural disadvantage. METHODS: We analyzed CRC incidence from 2017 to 2021 across Texas using Texas Cancer Registry data. Age-sex-race/ethnicity standardized cases were incorporated as offsets in Bayesian spatial models to generate tract-level posterior mean relative risks. We evaluated

Household Poverty and Obesity in Children With Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia: A Report From COG-AALL03N1.

Whether children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) living in household poverty are at an increased risk of obesity remains unknown. We address this gap using data from Children's Oncology Group study AALL03N1. Study participants reported annual household income, which was used to categorize poverty from year-specific US Census Bureau thresholds. Obesity was determined using height and weight at study enrollment. Multivariable logistic regression demonstrated 1.5-fold greater odds of obesity (95% confidence interval = 1.0-2.3, p = 0.04) among children with ALL living in poverty. These fin

Socioeconomic inequalities in Chile during the COVID-19 pandemic: A regional analysis of income poverty.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused an unprecedented economic crisis, intensifying poverty levels in Latin America, particularly in Chile. This study examines the short- and long-term socioeconomic impacts of COVID-19 on income poverty in Chile, focusing on regional disparities, rurality, ethnicity, educational attainment, and immigration. Using data from the Chile National Socioeconomic Characterization Survey (CASEN) for 2017, 2020, and 2022, we analyzed poverty trends across the pre-pandemic, pandemic, and post-pandemic periods. We employed spatial clustering techniques with Local Moran's I to det

A study protocol for developing a spatial vulnerability index for infectious diseases of poverty in the Caribbean region.

Infectious diseases of poverty (IDoP) affect disproportionately resource-limited and marginalized populations, resulting in spatial patterns of vulnerability across various geographical areas. Currently, no spatial indices exist to quantify vulnerability to IDoP at a fine geographical level within countries, such as municipalities or provinces. Without such an index, policymakers cannot effectively allocate resources or target interventions in the most vulnerable areas. This protocol aims to specify a methodological approach to measure spatial variation in vulnerability to IDoP. We will evalua

Maternity Leave, Race, and Postpartum Depression: The Impact of Public Policy on Mothers Living in Poverty.

BACKGROUND: Some maternity leave practices are associated with postpartum depressive (PPD) symptoms which in turn are linked with increased risk of poor maternal and infant outcomes. Mothers of color disproportionately experience poor maternity leave policies and elevated PPD symptoms. METHODS: This cross-sectional study employed data collected at baseline of the Baby's First Year study. Participants were 153 American mothers living below the poverty line. They were interviewed (2018-2019) in the days following birth regarding their race, maternity leave, and PPD symptoms. RESULTS: Findings

WALANT Decreases Costs of Surgery to Increase Access and Help Alleviate Poverty in East Africa.

Surgery is essential to help people regain health and get back to work. Many Africans cannot afford traditional surgery because the sedation and main operating room sterility components are much too expensive. This often results in crushing debt for African families. Lack of access to surgery leads to poverty and poverty leads to lack of access to surgery. Wide-awake local anesthesia no tourniquet surgery, minimal pain tumescent local anesthesia, and evidence-based sterility are 3 disruptive game-changing innovations that eliminate the expensive general anesthesia and/or main operating room st

Association of poverty-income ratio with cardiovascular disease and mortality in cancer survivors in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Lower income is associated with high incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality. CVD is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in cancer survivors. However, there is limited research on the association between income, CVD, and mortality in this population. METHODS: This study utilized nationally representative data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a cross-sectional survey evaluating the health and nutritional status of the US population. Our study included NHANES participants aged ≥20 years from 2003-2014, who self-reported a hist

Experiences and factors affecting poverty among families raising a child with a disability: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: Children with disabilities and their families are more likely to live in poverty than those without a disability. However, little is known about their lived experiences and the circumstances that influence their socio-economic condition. The aim of this study was to understand the experiences and factors affecting poverty among families raising children with disabilities. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted while searching eight international databases (Embase, Healthstar, Medline, PsycINFO, Econlit, Scopus, Web of Science, and Sociological Abstracts). Living in high-poverty areas is associated with reduced survival in patients with thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms.

OBJECTIVES: Studies have demonstrated that socioeconomic status, insurance, race, and distance impact clinical outcomes in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms. The purpose of this study was to assess if these factors also impact clinical outcomes in patients with thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAAs). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of patients with TAAAs confirmed by computed tomography imaging between 2009 and 2019 at a single institution. Patients' zip codes were mapped to American Community Survey Data to obtain geographic poverty rates. We used the standard U.S. Cen

[Experiences of uncertainty about the future, poverty risks, and precarious living situations in nursing homes].

The living situation of people in nursing homes, with a specific vulnerability to care-related impoverishment, is underresearched. This article deals with experiences of uncertainty, poverty and a precarious life situation of care home residents in later life. The data basis is supplied by an ethnographic study of ageing and living with chronic health conditions. A range of precarious living situations are outlined on the basis of real cases. Insights gleaned include: people with diverse sociobiographical backgrounds can be affected by insecurity, poverty and precarious life situations as a re

Dimensions of poverty as risk factors for antimicrobial resistant organisms in Canada: a structured narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have assessed the relationship between poverty and the risk of infection with antimicrobial resistant organisms (AROs). We sought to identify, appraise, and synthesize the available published Canadian literature that analyzes living in poverty and risk of AROs. METHODS: A structured narrative review methodology was used, including a systematic search of three databases: MedLINE, EMBASE and Web of Science for articles pertaining to poverty, and infection with AROs in Canada between 1990 and 2020. Poverty was broadly defined to include economic measures and associated so

The Impact of Poverty on Partner Violence Against Women Under Regional Effects: The Case of Turkey.

Violence against women has been the subject of scientific literature in many fields and poverty has been one of the most important companions in this field. It can be found lots of empirical studies about violence against women for countries as Turkey too. However, regional considerations relating to people's socioeconomic condition have not been considered in these investigations although it has been indicated that these factors are important in terms of violence against women. Therefore, the main motivation of this study to investigate the impact of poverty on partner violence against women

Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis, Food Deserts, Poverty, and Urban/Rural Residence: Is There a Link?

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is increased in food deserts, a community with little to no access to healthy food. As obesity is associated with slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), it was the purpose of this study to analyze the prevalence of SCFE patients by food desert location and its interaction with rural/urban location. METHODS: A retrospective review of all consecutive patients with idiopathic SCFE treated at our institution over 11 years was performed. From the patient's address, the US Census Bureau tract in which the patient resided was determined. Using the census tract code,
