Prescription of antibiotics and prescribers' characteristics. A study into prescription of antibiotics in upper respiratory tract infections in general practice.

There is a growing concern about rational prescribing of antibiotics. That is why a secondary analysis of prescribing antibiotics in upper respiratory tract infections has been conducted by means of a nationwide study of morbidity and interventions in The Netherlands. The mean percentage of antibiotic prescriptions varied from about 20% for acute otitis media and acute upper respiratory tract infections to about 70% for sinusitis and tonsillitis. Only attitude--toward prescribing antibiotics in sore throat--and years of settlement were important predictor variables. The other characteristics s

Recognizing the Elephant in the Room: High Arrhythmia Risk in Hemodialysis Patients' Prescriptions.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients on maintenance hemodialysis are at substantial risk of developing cardiovascular events, such as torsades de pointes and sudden cardiac death. QT-prolonging drugs have been well known, but the effect of these drugs on vulnerable populations, such as hemodialysis patients, has been understudied. This study aimed to analyse the prescription pattern for arrhythmogenic drugs in CKD patients on hemodialysis and evaluate for QT prolongation. METHODS: The cross-sectional observational study was carried out in a tertiary care teaching hospital between

Legislative Changes on Opioid Prescriptions for Ocular Procedures in a United States Cohort.

This ecological study examines the prevalence of postoperative opioid prescriptions among ophthalmic surgical patients during the implementation of four opioid policy interventions in Ohio. Changes in ophthalmic prescribing among 53 health care systems throughout the United States are compared to a population from the MetroHealth System in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Opioid prescription prevalence spiked among all populations amid Ohio's "pill mill" and mandatory registration policies and then consistently decreased during the state's mandatory reporting and number-of-day restrictions. Painful Prescriptions: Opioid and Antibiotic Use for Dental Pain in the Emergency Department.

Overprescription of opioids and antibiotics remains a significant public health challenge in the US, contributing to systemic and dental health issues. This study developed and tested a natural language processing (NLP) model to identify patients visiting the emergency department (ED) at Temple University Health System for dental-related reasons. We extracted data from EHR and EDR systems, yielding a cohort of 89,349 patients, including 2,918 (3%) with dental-related ED visits. Using gold-standard datasets created through manual annotation, the NLP model combined fuzzy matching and embedding-b

Acne management in Norway: GP and dermatologist prescriptions (2012-2019): a nationwide overview.

BACKGROUND: Acne is common and associated with negative psychosocial health and risk of permanent skin alterations. GPs prescribe the main portion of antibiotics used for acne. Increased isotretinoin prescription by GPs can potentially reduce overall antibiotic use, but prescription practice and trends are unknown. AIM: To examine acne treatment in Norway and quantify prescription and initiation of isotretinoin and tetracyclines. DESIGN & SETTING: An observational study linking data from health registries. Data were collected from the Norwegian Prescription Database (NorPD), the national GP

Opioid Cap Laws and Opioid Prescriptions After Total Joint Replacements in Older Adults.

IMPORTANCE: Despite the opioid crisis and a growing call for minimizing opioid use, opioids remain an important part of postoperative pain management, with more than 80% of patients filling at least 1 opioid prescription following total joint replacements (TJRs). Little is known as to whether state laws that restrict or cap opioids for acute pain reduce post-TJR opioid use. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of an opioid cap law in New York (Section 3331) with post-TJR opioid prescribing. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study analyzed Medicare data from 2014 to 2019 for Ne

Reducing Improper and Missed Peri-Procedure Antibiotics Prescriptions in a Regional Oncology Centre.

Background In the realm of oncology care, patients undergoing invasive procedures are particularly vulnerable to infections due to their compromised immune systems. Antibiotics play a pivotal role in preventing such infections. However, inappropriate or missed administration of peri-procedure antibiotics poses a significant risk in the form of treatment complications, contributing to antibiotic resistance and increased healthcare costs. Methods The study was a two-cycle, closed-loop quality improvement project utilizing both retrospective and prospective data analysis of peri-procedure antibio

Drug prescriptions preceding opioid-related deaths-a register study in forensic autopsy patients.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Opioid overdose deaths have increased in Sweden and other developed countries in recent decades, despite increased treatment efforts and harm-reduction interventions. Further knowledge in this field is needed if this trend is to be reversed. Previous research suggests that mental health and patterns of prescription of opioids and other prescription drugs are associated with increased opioid-related mortality. The present study therefore aimed to investigate what drugs were prescribed during the last six months of life to individuals with a history of illicit substance use who d

Administrative Burden of iPLEDGE Deters Isotretinoin Prescriptions: Results From a Survey of Dermatologists.

The requirements of the iPLEDGE program place burdens on both patients with severe recalcitrant nodular acne and prescribers of isotretinoin. We sought to investigate the changes in dermatologists' acne treatment patterns due to the administrative burden of iPLEDGE by assessing whether dermatologists chose not to prescribe isotretinoin to appropriate patients because of the labor of iPLEDGE requirements. Additionally, we investigated the medications that were substituted for isotretinoin. An anonymous online survey was created and posted on a dermatology group on social media. The survey respo

Trends in prescriptions of oral medications for psoriasis: A single-center retrospective study.

The systemic treatment of psoriasis has changed markedly with the introduction of many novel drugs. However, clinicians have had limited opportunities to evaluate these new therapies. One of the new drugs, apremilast (a phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitor), was approved in 2017 in Japan. We previously reported oral treatment for psoriasis before the introduction of apremilast. In this study, we investigated the impact of apremilast on oral medication for psoriasis by comparing data obtained before and after apremilast became available. This retrospective study enrolled patients who visited the Depar
