Mental disabilities in an Aboriginal context.

Aboriginal (meaning original peoples) North American mental health is acknowledged to be in a more precarious state than that of the dominant cultures. Disability arises from the conditions of poverty, homelessness, and lack of resources that are compounded for North American aboriginal people by the historical trauma of conquest, being placed on reservations, residential schools, and continued discrimination. We present culturally sensitive and syntonic intervention programs that can reduce the impact of Aboriginal mental disabilities and discuss the commonality among these programs of celebr

The effectiveness of mentoring speech and language pathology students when they face patients with cleft palate.

INTRODUCTION: Mentoring programs can boost Speech & Language (SL) pathologists' satisfaction about their clinical skills, increasing their professional competence. A quality induction program provides a bridge for an efficient and comfortable transition between theoretical knowledge and clinical practice in front of clients. This transition can be especially difficult when the SL pathologist confronts patients with cleft palate. OBJECTIVE: To study whether a mentoring program can improve SL Pathology students' performance for treating patients with cleft palate. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 18 SL

Effectiveness of Outpatient Adolescent Dialectical Behavior Therapy Adapted for Spanish-Speaking Families: A Retrospective Chart Review.

BACKGROUND: Latinx adolescents are the largest minoritized ethnic group in the United States. They are at elevated risk for suicidal and non-suicidal behaviors and symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Dialectical behavior therapy for adolescents (DBT-A) is an evidence-based treatment that targets these behaviors, yet limited evidence exists on the effectiveness of adapting DBT-A to Latinx adolescents with Spanish-speaking families. OBJECTIVE: This study compared an established English-language DBT-A program to a Spanish DBT Program for Adolescents (DBT-SPA), a translated and ada

A domain-general perspective on the role of the basal ganglia in language and music: Benefits of music therapy for the treatment of aphasia.

In addition to cortical lesions, mounting evidence on the links between language and the subcortical regions suggests that subcortical lesions may also lead to the emergence of aphasic symptoms. In this paper, by emphasizing the domain-general function of the basal ganglia in both language and music, we highlight that rhythm processing, the function of temporal prediction, motor programming and execution, is an important shared mechanism underlying the treatment of non-fluent aphasia with music therapy. In support of this, we conduct a literature review on the music therapy treating aphasia. T

Toward a postmodern realism for psychoanalysis.

The current status of psychoanalysis is explored in the light of the postmodern critique of forms of knowledge. Analysts have tended to respond by redefining psychoanalysis in the language of the exact sciences or by finding a language that includes both (Kuhn, Rorty), thereby falling either into a reductive "scientism" or the fallacies of the "strong program" in postmodern thought. However, psychoanalytic theories do not meet the probative requirements of science. Neither is the serious problem of competing theories and interpretations adequately addressed by hermeneutics. Coping with dyslexia in the regular classroom: Inclusion or exclusion.

The article begins with an historical review of the many attempts to cope with learning disabled and other handicapped children in schools, especially in regular classrooms. Children with dyslexia are reportedly the majority of individuals with learning disabilities. Most researchers have reached concensus that dyslexia originates with specific impairment of language processing. Although it would seem necessary for educators, especially those who teach the primary grades, to understand the structure of the English language and the alphabetic writing system, there is evidence that teachers are

Systematic review of economic evaluations of vaccination programs in mainland China: Are they sufficient to inform decision making?

The purpose of the study was to systematically review economic evaluations of vaccine programs conducted in mainland China. We searched for economic evaluations of vaccination in China published prior to August 3, 2015 in eight English-language and three Chinese-language databases. Each article was appraised against the 19-item Consensus on Health Economic Criteria list (CHEC-list). We found 23 papers evaluating vaccines against hepatitis B (8 articles), Streptococcus pneumoniae (5 articles), human papillomavirus (3 articles), Japanese encephalitis (2 articles), rotavirus (2 articles), hepatit

Amplifying Coaches' voices from the implementation of the MindSKILLZ youth mental health program in Kenya: A critical discourse analysis.

Young implementers bring valuable insights that can help inform and create effective mental health support systems and interventions tailored to their needs and unique experiences. However, their perspectives are often overlooked. This qualitative study analysed discourses from community role models, referred to as MindSKILLZ Coaches. We hosted five focus group discussions and collected 30 personal stories journaled by MindSKILLZ Coaches in Nairobi and Mombasa counties between August 2023 and March 2024. We were interested in understanding their experiences implementing a mental health interve

Using latent profiles to evaluate response to a language-based intervention.

Many children with oral language difficulties also experience challenges with word reading, as evidenced in the high comorbidity rate between developmental language disorders and dyslexia. The current study investigated a sample of students (n = 357) with language and literacy difficulties classified into latent classes based on pre-intervention performance on word reading and listening comprehension measures. Specifically, this study sought to determine the extent to which latent classes responded to an evidence-based, narrative language program at immediate post-test and a five-month follow-

Temporal-sampling theory and language in Down syndrome: An empirical study.

BACKGROUND: Temporal-sampling theory argues that difficulties in the processing of syllable stress auditory markers and in lexical stress discrimination contribute to explaining the language problems of children with developmental language disorder and of those with dyslexia. The theory has not been tested in other developmental disabilities. AIMS: This research sought to assess the potential of temporal-sampling theory as a framework to accounting for language difficulties in Down syndrome (DS). METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Thresholds for auditory markers of lexical stress, lexical stress discri

Continuing management of conductive hearing loss during language development.

Recently greater attention has been focussed on the possibility that mild fluctuating or intermittent hearing loss, as seen in one of early childhood's most common illnesses, otitis media, may have long-lasting and sometimes devastating effects on language development and learning. Conductive hearing loss in serous otitis media most affects frequencies below 2000 Hz, and the duration of hearing loss after an acute episode of otitis media may last 6-24 months in up to 30% of affected children. The first principle of management of this problem and congenital conductive hearing loss is detection
