Functional genetic characterization of salivary gland development in Aedes aegypti.

BACKGROUND: Despite the devastating global impact of mosquito-borne illnesses on human health, very little is known about mosquito developmental biology. In this investigation, functional genetic analysis of embryonic salivary gland development was performed in Aedes aegypti, the dengue and yellow fever vector and an emerging model for vector mosquito development. Although embryonic salivary gland development has been well studied in Drosophila melanogaster, little is known about this process in mosquitoes or other arthropods. RESULTS: Mosquitoes possess orthologs of many genes that regulate

PGRP-LA regulates peritrophic matrix synthesis and influences trypanosome infection outcomes in tsetse flies.

Peptidoglycan Recognition Proteins (PGRPs) are conserved proteins regulating immune responses to the peptidoglycan microbe-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs). Compared to other dipterans, the tsetse fly (Glossina morsitans morsitans) genome encodes only five PGRPs- PGRP-LA, -LB, -LC, -SA, and -SB - far fewer than most dipterans, likely reflecting its sterile blood diet and streamlined microbiota. Here, we identify PGRP-LA as a critical regulator of peritrophic matrix (PM) integrity in the cardia (proventriculus), the tissue responsible for PM production. The PM is a chitinous sleeve-like ba

Experimental evidence of early-phase transmission of Yersinia pestis by Synopsyllus fonquerniei and Xenopsylla brasiliensis.

BACKGROUND: Flea-borne transmission of the plague bacillus, Yersinia pestis, occurs through two regurgitation-based mechanisms. One, called early-phase transmission (EPT), takes place within 24-96 hours post-infection through a poorly understood mechanism. The second requires an intrinsic incubation period and relies on the formation of a biofilm obstructing the flea's proventriculus. Although these mechanisms have been described in different flea species, they have never been characterized in Xenopsylla brasiliensis and Synopsyllus fonquerniei, which are two flea vectors suspected and confirm

Harnessing the adsorption efficiency of chitosan nanoparticles and its hybrid nanocomposites against aflatoxin B1 in simulated poultry gut conditions.

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by toxigenic fungi, primarily on cereal crops. Among them, aflatoxins B1 (AFB1) is the most dangerous, with carcinogenic, toxigenic and mutagenic effects that pose serious risk to birds and humans. Previously, various control strategies have been used to control aflatoxicosis but there is need to use common alternative strategies to reduce the impact of aflatoxicosis. Therefore, the present study has been planned to check the binding efficiency of different binders such as chitosan, glucomannan and bentonite in nanomaterials and nanocomposites form

The in ovo screening of 27 single essential oils showed selective effects on hatchability, performance and gene expression relevant to gut functions in broilers at hatch.

The early post-hatching phase remains to be one of the most vulnerable phases in broiler production. Some essential oils have been reported to improve gut health and growth in broiler chickens when applied to post-hatching diets. However, in-feed applications are unable to prevent the health challenges observed immediately after hatching. Thus, pre-hatch interventions need to be considered. A research project was developed with the aim of investigating the impact of in ovo application of 27 selected essential oils (EOs) on foetal development with emphasis on gut integrity in broiler hatchlings

The influence of genotype and sex on carcass composition, meat quality, digestive system morphometry and leg bone dimensions in Japanese quails (C. coturnix japonica).

Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica) have a high reproductive rate because they reach sexual maturity very early. This short rearing time results in increasing interest among breeders and consumers. The aim of the study was a comparative analysis of two genotypes and sexes of Japanese and Pharaoh quails and their impact on body weight, carcass composition, meat quality, digestive system morphometry and leg bone dimensions. The study involved 40 birds (10 females and 10 males), Japanese quail and Pharaoh quail, 42 days old. Quail genotype had an effect (P < 0.05) on body weight, carcass weight,

Gut microbiota shift in layer pullets fed on black soldier fly larvae-based feeds towards enhancing healthy gut microbial community.

Globally, most gut microbiota-related studies have focused on broilers due to their diverse microbial communities compared to that of layer chicken. However, in Africa few studies have been undertaken despite the increasing benefits to the poultry industry. The utilization of Insect-Based diets to improve the gastrointestinal function and gut health in poultry is increasingly gaining global attention. Here, we evaluated the potential roles of commercial black soldier fly larvae-based feeds (BSFLF) in reshaping the abundance, composition and diversity of the gut microbiota of layer chickens usi

Research Note: Virulence gene downregulation and reduced intestinal colonization of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium PHL2020 isolate in broilers by a natural antimicrobial (NeutraPath™).

The reduction in antibiotic growth promoter use in poultry, due to antibiotic resistance concerns, has created a need for natural solutions that control enteric pathogens like Salmonella. One of these natural feed additives, a select blend of essential oils, fatty acids, and an enterosorbent mineral (NeutraPath), was assessed for its effects on the intestinal colonization of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium PHL2020 isolate (ST-PHL2020) in broiler chickens and ST-PHL2020 virulence gene expression. Influence of the particle size and form of feed on growth performance, digestive tract traits and nutrient digestibility of white egg-laying pullets from 1 to 112 D of age.

The influence of the grinding and physical form of diets on growth performance, gastrointestinal tract (GIT) development and nutrient digestibility was studied in layer pullets from hatch to 112 d of age. Diet formed a 2 × 2 factorial with 2 hammer mill screen sizes to grind cereals (4 and 8 mm) and 2 forms (mash and crumble). A total of 864 1-day-old layer chickens were randomly assigned to 1 of the 4 treatment groups with 8 replicates (27 birds per replicate). Cumulatively, pullets fed crumbles consumed less feed (P < 0.05) and had better feed conversion ratio (FCR; P < 0.01) than those fed

Morphology of ctenostome bryozoans: 7. Hislopia, Echinella and Timwoodiellina.

Ctenostome bryozoans are a small group of gymnolaemates comprising less than 400 recent species. They are paraphyletic and ctenostome-grade ancestors gave rise to Cheilostomata, the most dominant and speciose taxon of Bryozoa in the present day. Investigations into ctenostomes are important for reconstructing character evolution among Gymnolaemata. As a continuation of studies on a morphological series of ctenostome bryozoans, we herein investigate six species of hislopiids, a small clade of three genera occurring in freshwater habitats. The general morphology of all species is similar in havi

Morphological description of the alimentary canal and adnexal glands in Amazilia tzacatl, Amazilia saucerottei, Amazilia amabilis and Anthrachotorax nigricollis species.

The hummingbird family (Trochilidae) includes the smallest and most metabolically active vertebrates. They have a high energy demand because of their extraordinarily high metabolic rates during hovering while looking for food. The morphology of the digestive apparatus is related to the feeding habits of the species. The anatomy and histology of the digestive apparatus in these birds have not been thoroughly described except for their tongue. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the gross anatomy and histology of the alimentary canal and adnexal glands in four species from the hummingbird fa

Layer chicken microbiota: a comprehensive analysis of spatial and temporal dynamics across all major gut sections.

BACKGROUND: The gut microbiota influences chicken health, welfare, and productivity. A diverse and balanced microbiota has been associated with improved growth, efficient feed utilisation, a well-developed immune system, disease resistance, and stress tolerance in chickens. Previous studies on chicken gut microbiota have predominantly focused on broiler chickens and have usually been limited to one or two sections of the digestive system, under controlled research environments, and often sampled at a single time point. To extend these studies, this investigation examined the microbiota of comm

Tissue tropism of the HPRS-103 strain of J subgroup avian leukosis virus and of a derivative acutely transforming virus.

The tissue tropism was studied for the HPRS-103 strain of avian leukosis virus, which belongs to a new envelope subgroup, designated J. Studies were conducted in blood monocyte and bone marrow cell cultures and in chickens from six lines that had been shown previously to differ in susceptibility to induction by this virus of myeloid leukosis and other tumors. Using an immunohistochemical technique to detect expression of viral group-specific antigen (Gag) in various tissues, we detected no major differences among the six lines of chickens at 3 and 7 weeks of age following infection as embryos.
