Evidence suggests that 24.5%-46.7% (mean 31%) of patients with Parkinson's disease experience an anxiety disorder, a much higher prevalence than in controls. Anxiety does not appear to be a consequence of diagnosis or the motoric symptoms of the disorder and can manifest as Generalised Anxiety Disorder, phobias or panic attacks. At present, the neural underpinnings of anxiety disorders in Parkinson's disease is unknown. Here, we make the novel proposal that the superior colliculus (SC), one component of a rapid, reflexive threat detection system in the brain, consisting of the colliculus, pulv

Medial temporal basal arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) have complex anatomy. They usually drain to the basal vein of Rosenthal, and arterial feeders can arise from the anterior choroidal artery and its branches, or from the posterior cerebral artery. If the AVM is more posterior in the parahippocampal gyrus, there is a predominance of arterial feeders arising from P2P or P3 segments of the posterior cerebral artery. As posterior AVMs are difficult to reach using anterior approaches, the supracerebellar transtentorial approach provides a direct pathway to the malformation, allowing better vis

The exposed surface of the superior parietal lobule in macaque brain contains two architectonically defined areas named PEc and PE. The aim of the present study is the characterization of thalamic afferents of these two areas. For this purpose, retrograde neuronal tracers were injected, or placed in crystal form, in areas PEc and PE. We found that the two areas show a similar pattern of thalamic inputs, mainly originating from Lateral Posterior (LP), Pulvinar (Pul), Ventral Posterior Lateral (VPL), and Ventral Lateral (VL) nuclei, all structures known to be involved in visual, somatosensory, a

Fabry disease (FD) is a rare inherited disorder of the metabolism, associated with renal, cardiac, and cerebrovascular complications. Ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke in FD present with a similar proportion to that observed in the general population, but usually at an early age. Ischemic stroke may result from cardiac embolism, large and small vessel disease, while hemorrhagic stroke is usually attributed to hypertension. Deposition of glycosphingolipids in endothelial cells results in a specific FD vasculopathy that contributes to the different vascular phenotypes. Neuroimaging features of cer

BACKGROUND: "Theory of mind" (TOM) refers to the ability to attribute mental states (ie, beliefs and goals) to one's self and others and to recognize that behaviors are guided by these mental states. This capacity, critical for social competence, is impaired in schizophrenia. We undertook a study of TOM in a group of patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls.
METHOD: We used positron emission tomography to identify the neural circuits recruited during a verbal task that required participants to attribute mental states to a character in a story of their creation. The comparison task con

Subjects with schizophrenia show deficits in visual perception that suggest changes predominantly in the magnocellular pathway and/or the dorsal visual stream important for visiospatial perception. We previously found a substantial 25% reduction in neuron number of the primary visual cortex (Brodmann's area 17, BA17) in postmortem tissue from subjects with schizophrenia. Also, many studies have found reduced volume and neuron number of the pulvinar--the large thalamic association nucleus involved in higher-order visual processing. Here, we investigate if the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), t

The thalamus is a deep cerebral structure that is crucial for proper neurological functioning as it transmits signals from nearly all pathways in the body. Insult to the thalamus can, therefore, result in complex syndromes involving sensation, cognition, executive function, fine motor control, emotion, and arousal, to name a few. Specific territories in the thalamus that are supplied by deep cerebral arteries have been shown to correlate with clinical symptoms. The aim of this review is to enhance our understanding of the arterial anatomy of the thalamus and the complications that can arise fr

Structural alterations in long-range amygdala connections are proposed to crucially underlie several neuropsychiatric disorders. While progress has been made in elucidating the function of these connections, our understanding of their structure in humans remains sparse and non-systematic. Harnessing diffusion-weighted imaging and probabilistic tractography in humans, we investigate connections between two main amygdala nucleus groups, thalamic nuclei, and cortex. We first parcellated amygdala into deep (basolateral) and superficial (centrocortical) nucleus groups, and thalamus into six subregi

Brain anatomical alterations in gray matter(GM), white matter(WM), and glymphatic system(GS) in patients with hepatitis B cirrhosis(HBC) with minimal hepatic encephalopathy(MHE) remain to be clarified. A total of 33 healthy controls and 37 patients with treatment-native primary HBC (further subdivided into HBC in MHE group[MHE] and HBC in non-MHE group[NMHE]) participated in neuroimaging study with three-dimensional T1 and a half q-space Cartesian grid diffusion model. Group differences in regional GM volume(GMV) were assessed using voxel-based morphometry(VBM) analysis. Differences in WM diff

OBJECTIVE: We describe gadolinium-enhanced MR imaging of position and vascular enhancement of the femoral head in pediatric patients who have undergone reduction of hip dislocation.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Within 24 hr of hip reduction and spica casting, we performed 25 gadolinium-enhanced MR studies in 18 infants and young children (15 girls, three boys) with 23 dysplastic hips. All but two patients underwent closed reductions. We evaluated intraoperative arthrograms for obstacles to reduction and subsequent radiographs for avascular necrosis.
RESULTS: MR images showed that all femoral heads

MRI plays an increasingly important role in the diagnosis of status epilepticus (SE). Approximately half of patients with SE do not have pre-existing epilepsy, and the cause of de novo SE is frequently unknown. The role of MRI in the identification of causes of SE is invaluable. MRI is often helpful as a diagnostic tool in cases of non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) with ambiguous EEG findings. Thus, MRI is recommended for all patients presenting with de novo SE, patients with known epilepsy with the first episode of SE and NCSE with equivocal EEG. Different peri-ictal MRI (PMA) alterati

OBJECTIVE: Predictive coding is a theoretical framework that integrates models of brain dysconnectivity and psychopathology in psychosis. Thalamocortical dysconnectivity as well as reduced thalamic volumes have been reported in psychotic disorders. However, the role of the thalamus in predictive coding is not clear. We examined the relationship between magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)- based thalamic nuclei volumes and mismatch negativity (MMN), a purported index of prediction error signaling known to be impaired in psychosis.
METHODS: We obtained MRI and MMN using a roving paradigm from indi

BACKGROUND: The thalamus plays a crucial role in sensory processing, emotional regulation, and cognitive functions, and its dysregulation may be implicated in psychosis. The aim of the present study was to examine the differences in thalamic subregional volumes between pediatric bipolar disorder patients with (P-PBD) and without psychotic symptoms (NP-PBD).
METHODS: Participants including 28 P-PBD, 26 NP-PBD, and 18 healthy controls (HCs) underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) scanning using a 3.0T MRI scanner. All T1-weighted imaging data were processed by FreeSurfer 7.4.0 so

INTRODUCTION: Essential tremor (ET) is a progressive disorder characterized by altered network connectivity between the cerebellum, thalamus, and cortical regions. Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) of the ventral intermediate nucleus (VIM) is an effective, minimally invasive treatment for ET. The impact of MRgFUS interventions on regional Gray Matter Volume (GMV) are as yet not well understood.
METHODS: Forty-six patients with medication-resistant ET underwent unilateral VIM-MRgFUS. Voxel-based morphometry was applied to investigate GMV changes over a time span of 6 months

Rapidly detecting salient information in our environments is critical for survival. Visual processing in subcortical areas like the pulvinar and amygdala has been shown to facilitate unconscious processing of salient stimuli. It is unknown, however, if and how these areas might interact with cortical regions to facilitate faster conscious perception of salient stimuli. Here we investigated these neural processes using 7T functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in concert with computational modelling while participants (n = 33) engaged in a breaking continuous flash suppression paradigm (b

OBJECTIVE: To identify how alterations in glucose levels are associated with regional brain injury in neonatal encephalopathy.
METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study of 102 newborns with neonatal encephalopathy, with continuous glucose monitoring for 72 h. 97 (95%) completed 72 h of therapeutic hypothermia. Brain imaging around day 5 of life included diffusion tensor imaging and MR spectroscopy. Regions of interest were placed for both DTI and MR spectroscopy, and tractography of the optic radiation and corticospinal tract were evaluated. Linear regression models related each MR metric

Mouse lemurs are the smallest of extant primates and are thought to resemble early primates in many ways. We provide histological descriptions of the major sensory nuclei of the dorsal thalamus and the superior colliculus (SC) of mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus). The dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus has the six layers typical of strepsirrhine primates, with matching pairs of magnocellular, parvocellular, and koniocellular layers, one of each pair for each eye. Unlike most primates, magnocellular and parvocellular layers exhibit only small differences in cell size. All layers express vesicula

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder with cognitive, motor, and emotional symptoms. The thalamus and basal ganglia form circuits with the cortex supporting all three of these behavioral domains. Abnormalities in the structure of subcortical regions may suggest atypical development of these networks, with implications for understanding the neural basis of ASD symptoms. Findings from previous volumetric studies have been inconsistent. Here, using advanced surface-based methodology, we investigated localized differences in shape and surface area in the basal gang

Developmental dysplasia of the hip is a spectrum disorder of hip development that ranges in severity from abnormal acetabular morphology to complete hip dislocation. While treatment with a Pavlik harness is highly effective in infants younger than 6 months, older infants and children and those with orthotic failure often warrant surgical reduction and placement of a spica cast, which limits subsequent imaging evaluation. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has been described in the evaluation of the adequacy of hip reduction for more than 2 decades, but the practice is still not widespread and is

Although specific phobia is a prevalent anxiety disorder, evidence regarding its underlying functional neuroanatomy is inconsistent. A meta-analysis was undertaken to identify brain regions that were consistently responsive to phobic stimuli, and to characterize changes in brain activation following cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). We searched the PubMed, SCOPUS and PsycINFO databases to identify positron emission tomography and functional magnetic resonance imaging studies comparing brain activation in specific phobia patients and healthy controls. Two raters independently extracted study
