A new computer-aided detection scheme based on assessment of local bilateral mammographic feature asymmetry - a preliminary evaluation.

Accurate segmentation of breast lesions depicting on two-dimensional projection mammograms has been proven very difficult and unreliable. In this study we investigated a new approach of a computer-aided detection (CAD) scheme of mammograms without lesion segmentation. Our scheme was developed based on the detection and analysis of region-of-interest (ROI)-based bilateral mammographic tissue or feature asymmetry. A bilateral image registration, image feature selection process, and naïve Bayes linear classifier were implemented in CAD scheme. CAD performance predicting the likelihood of either a

An automatic mass detection system in mammograms based on complex texture features.

It is difficult for radiologists to identify the masses on a mammogram because they are surrounded by complicated tissues. In current breast cancer screening, radiologists often miss approximately 10-30% of tumors because of the ambiguous margins of lesions and visual fatigue resulting from long-time diagnosis. For these reasons, many computer-aided detection (CADe) systems have been developed to aid radiologists in detecting mammographic lesions which may indicate the presence of breast cancer. This study presents an automatic CADe system that uses local and discrete texture features for mamm

Intra- and inter-observer reliability of determining radiographic sagittal parameters of the spine and pelvis using a manual and a computer-assisted methods.

Sagittal imbalance is a significant factor in determining clinical treatment outcomes in patients with deformity. Measurement of sagittal alignment using the traditional Cobb technique is frequently hampered by difficulty in visualizing landmarks. This report compares traditional manual measurement techniques to a computer-assisted sagittal plane measurement program which uses a radius arc methodology. The intra and inter-observer reliability of the computer program has been shown to be 0.92-0.99. Twenty-nine lateral 90 cm radiographs were measured by a computer program for an array of sagitta

Forensic odontologists successfully identify tsunami victims in Phuket, Thailand.

More than a year has elapsed since the seaquake in South-East Asia in December 2004, and more than 92% of the non-Thai victims have been identified. About 80% of the non-Thai victims were identified by dental information. This high success rate of dental identification in Thailand was a matter of surprise for many forensic experts. Identification based on dental information is a highly efficient, reliable and rapid procedure. The conclusions drawn from the identification of tsunami victims in Thailand were recently discussed at the 17th Meeting of the Standing Committee on Disaster Victim Iden

Planning analysis of knee-adjacent deformities. I. Frontal plane deformities.

The planning analysis of leg deformities around the knee joint is based on a standardized clinical examination and on long leg standing anteroposterior (AP) radiographs, which may be complemented by spot-film radiographs and stress radiographs. The principles of true-nominal analysis in six steps are used to characterize the deformity and plan the corrective osteotomy: 1. Drawing in the anatomic points of reference. 2. Establishing the mechanical weight-bearing axis. 3. Determining the axis and orientation angles around the knee joint. 4. Determining the correction goal. 5. Deciding on the ost

Clinical evaluation of assistant diagnostic system for mammograms using the auto-analyzing method.

Clinical usefulness of a newly developed auto-analyzing system of mammograms to search the abnormal dense areas such as cancer lesions was studied. 345 breasts including 86 cancers, 52 mastopathies, 18 fibroadenomas, 13 cysts, 4 lipomas and 172 normals were analyzed and compared with final diagnosis. 84 of 86 cancer lesions were correctly pointed out (sensitivity: 97.9%). Based on the gradient of the density, the ranking of the cancer or calcified lesions among suspected regions in a mammogram was decided. 55 lesions of them (64.0%) were ordered at the first rank and 83 (96.5%) were in the upp

Enhancing radiomics features via a large language model for classifying benign and malignant breast tumors in mammography.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Radiomics is widely used to assist in clinical decision-making, disease diagnosis, and treatment planning for various target organs, including the breast. Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) have helped enhance radiomics analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Herein, we sought to improve radiomics analysis by incorporating LLM-learned clinical knowledge, to classify benign and malignant tumors in breast mammography. We extracted radiomics features from the mammograms based on the region of interest and retained the features related to the target task. Using pr

A Method for Microcalcifications Detection in Breast Mammograms.

Breast cancer is the most cause of death for women above age 40 around the world. In this paper, we propose a method to detect microcalcifications in digital mammography images using two-dimensional Discrete Wavelets Transform and image enhancement techniques for removing noise as well as to get a better contrast. The initial step is applying a preprocessing techniques to improve the edge of the breast and then segmentation process (Region of interest) for eliminating some regions in the image, which are not useful for the mammography interpretation. Then unsharp masking and histogram modifica

Imaging the neonatal heart--essentials for the radiologist.

Modern radiological imaging provides precise diagnosis in congenital heart disease (CHD). The most important and readily available radiological examination is still chest radiography. The diagnostically most important imaging method is echocardiography. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography have gained much ground over the more invasive cardiac catheter angiography, which is still needed in more complex conditions and for interventional procedures, which are performed more frequently. This article is focused on imaging of the neonatal heart. Basically, characteristics of the chest

Mathematical model for pre-operative planning of linear and closing-wedge metatarsal osteotomies for the correction of hallux valgus.

First-metatarsal osteotomy is performed for an abnormal intermetatarsal angle and severe hallux valgus deformity. The metatarsal head is slid along the osteotomy and fixed with a Kirschner wire to achieve angular and linear realignment with respect to the other metatarsals. When reduction of joint subluxation is also sought, a bone wedge is removed. A mathematical model and a corresponding computer-based tool were developed for pre-operative planning of the optimum surgical solution. Standard intermetatarsal angle correction, head-to-sesamoids re-alignment, joint subluxation reduction and meta

Improved determination of breast cancer size in mammography.

Breast cancer size determination in a preoperative stage is of great importance, as it is taking into account the classification of the tumour. In this paper a simple method of the improved determination of the actual tumour size is presented. The method is based on the calculation of correction factors taking into account the magnification of the tumour image during the mammographic examination. The method was applied for evaluation on forty cases of breast cancer. In all cases the final approximation of tumour maximum diameter with the presented method is almost equal to this obtained from t

Data acquisition analysis for femoral morphometric X-ray absorptiometry.

Bone mineral density (BMD) is a contributing factor of hip fracture risk. Other factors, such as lifestyle, the propensity for falls, and femoral geometry may influence the risk of hip fracture. The DMS Lexxos densitometer, a dual-energy X-ray densitometer can produce either a single-energy X-ray or a BMD image. The purpose of this study was to evaluate which of these 2 images enables the best detection to make femoral morphometry measurements. Spatial resolution, contrast, and noise were evaluated separately. A contrast-detail phantom was also used for the purpose of overall visual analysis.

A Micro-CT and Synchrotron Imaging Study of the Human Endolymphatic Duct with Special Reference to Endolymph Outflow and Meniere's Disease.

Meniere's disease remains enigmatic, and has no treatment with sufficient evidence. The characteristic histopathological finding is endolymphatic hydrops, suggesting either an overproduction or decreased reabsorption of endolymph in the human inner ear. This study presents the first analysis of the vascular plexus around the human endolymphatic duct using micro computed tomography and coherent synchrotron radiation with phase contrast imaging. Using a software program, data were processed by volume-rendering with scalar opacity mapping to create transparent three-dimensional reconstructions. A
