Exploring gastrointestinal helminth infections in Amazonian non-human primates.

Although gastrointestinal helminths have a high prevalence in non-human primates (NHPs), there is still a large lack of knowledge about their interactions with climate-driven seasonal patterns, particularly in tropical rainforests. Using gastrointestinal dissections from 11 free-ranging NHP species (N = 190 individuals) donated by indigenous subsistence hunters, we investigated gastrointestinal helminth infections in two areas in the northeastern Peruvian Amazon. Helminth richness included seven nematodes, two cestodes, and one acanthocephala. Parasites were detected in 85.3% of NHPs, with the

Development of a neutralizing monoclonal antibody targeting Bothrops atrox venom metalloproteinases.

Snakebites are classified as a neglected tropical disease by the World Health Organization. In South America's tropical rainforests, Bothrops genus, particularly Bothrops atrox, is responsible for most incidents. Severe local effects, such as hemorrhage, are primarily caused by snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs), which are not fully neutralized by conventional therapy. Here, we report the production of a neutralizing monoclonal antibody (mAb) against the hemorrhagic activity of B. atrox venom metalloproteinases. mAbs were produced by immunization of BALB/c mice using the B. atrox venom (Ba

Temporal and Spatial Dynamics of Monkeypox in Democratic Republic of Congo, 2000-2015.

Monkeypox is a viral disease with a clinical presentation resembling that of smallpox. Although monkeypox is considered to be an important zoonotic viral disease, its epidemiology remains poorly understood, especially the spatial and temporal distribution of the disease. The present study examined weekly reports of monkeypox cases collected from 2000 to 2015 at the health zone scale in the Democratic Republic of Congo. SaTScan® was performed to identify spatial and temporal clusters of monkeypox cases. Significant primary spatial clusters were detected in the districts of Sankuru and Tshuapa.

Cut through the noise: vocal signals and auditory processing vary along an urbanization gradient in Pacific treefrogs.

From dense assemblages of vocalizing organisms in neotropical rainforests, to fast-flowing streams and waterfalls in the Old World, Peter Narins' work has been instrumental to our understanding of how animals, particularly frogs, communicate in noisy environments. With increasing levels of human-generated noise, there has been an explosion of studies on how vocal signals and signaling behaviors change in urban soundscapes. Surprisingly, we know little about changes in sensory-processing mechanisms of receivers. We asked whether vocal signals, hearing sensitivity, and the ability to extract sig

In vitro evaluation of alkaline lignins as antiparasitic agents and their use as an excipient in the release of benznidazole.

The Amazon rainforest is considered the largest tropical timber reserve in the world. The management of native forests in the Amazon is one of the most sensitive geopolitical issues today, given its national and international dimension. In this work, we obtained and characterized physicochemical lignins extracted from branches and leaves of Protium puncticulatum and Scleronema micranthum. In addition, we evaluated in vitro its potential as an antioxidant, cytotoxic agent against animal cells and antiparasitic against promastigotes of Leishmania amazonensis, trypomastigotes of T. cruzi and agai

A brief review on the natural history, venomics and the medical importance of bushmaster (Lachesis) pit viper snakes.

Snakes of the genus Lachesis, commonly known as bushmasters, are the largest venomous snakes in the Americas. Because these snakes have their habitats in areas of remote forests they are difficult to find, and consequently there are few studies of Lachesis taxa in their natural ecosystems. Bushmasters are distributed in tropical forest areas of South and Central America. In Brazil they can be found in the Amazon Rainforest and the Atlantic Forest. Despite the low incidence of cases, laquetic envenoming causes severe permanent sequelae due to the high amount of inoculated venom. These accidents

A novel Borrelia species, intermediate between Lyme disease and relapsing fever groups, in neotropical passerine-associated ticks.

Lyme disease (LD) and relapsing fevers (RF) are vector-borne diseases caused by bacteria of the Borrelia genus. Here, we report on the widespread infection by a non-described Borrelia species in passerine-associated ticks in tropical rainforests of French Guiana, South America. This novel Borrelia species is common in two tick species, Amblyomma longirostre and A. geayi, which feed on a broad variety of neotropical mammal and bird species, including migratory species moving to North America. The novel Borrelia species is divergent from the LD and RF species, and is more closely related to the

Infections with Soil-Transmitted Helminths in BaAka Pygmies Inhabiting the Rain Forests in the Central African Republic.

Poor sanitation, improper food handling, limited access to safe drinking water sources, and limited access to healthcare services contribute to a high prevalence of infections caused by soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) among the BaAka Pygmies, an indigenous community living in Central Africa. The aim of this study was to determine the rates of STH infections in the BaAka people inhabiting the rain forests of the south-western parts of the Central African Republic (CAR) as well as to examine the validity of biannual deworming with a single dose of albendazole 400 mg in high-risk communities ex

Fecal parasite risk in the endangered proboscis monkey is higher in an anthropogenically managed forest environment compared to a riparian rain forest in Sabah, Borneo.

Understanding determinants shaping infection risk of endangered wildlife is a major topic in conservation medicine. The proboscis monkey, Nasalis larvatus, an endemic primate flagship species for conservation in Borneo, is endangered through habitat loss, but can still be found in riparian lowland and mangrove forests, and in some protected areas. To assess socioecological and anthropogenic influence on intestinal helminth infections in N. larvatus, 724 fecal samples of harem and bachelor groups, varying in size and the number of juveniles, were collected between June and October 2012 from two

An expanded species-area perspective on helminth diversity and infection load in lizards: A phylogenetic comparative approach.

Hosts function as ecological islands for endoparasites, offering structured habitats that support parasite survival, growth, and reproduction. Larger and older hosts are often expected to harbour more diverse and abundant parasitic assemblages due to increased structural complexity and longer exposure times. In this study, we investigated how host body size and phylogenetic relatedness influence endoparasite mean richness and mean intensity of infection in lizards from the Atlantic Rainforest of northeastern Brazil. We analysed 121 parasitised specimens representing 15 species, recording body

Querying Q fever: spatiotemporal patterns and environmental drivers in French Guiana.

BACKGROUND: Q fever is a zoonotic infection caused by the bacterium Coxiella burnetii. French Guiana, largely covered by the Amazon rainforest, is considered a hyper-endemic region. While ruminants are the primary reservoirs worldwide, the reservoir in French Guiana remains debated, likely relying on wild fauna. This study aimed to identify spatiotemporal clusters of human Q fever in the Cayenne area and investigate their relationships with environmental factors using remote sensing data. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on acute Q fever human cases from January 2007 to December 2

Biodiscovery of Actinomycetota through metabolo-genomics reveals functional diversity across contrasting Mexican ecosystems.

Discovery of novel bioactive natural products from Actinomycetota has decreased, motivating the exploration of rare ecosystems. In this work, we integrated genomics and untargeted metabolomics to profile the biosynthetic capacity of Streptomyces and Nocardia strains isolated from two contrasting, Ramsar-listed Mexican biomes with well-defined ecological features: Cuatro Ciénegas, a semi-arid, oligotrophic karst basin with high microbial endemism, and Calakmul, a tropical rainforest characterized by high biodiversity, seasonal wetlands and limestone-derived alkaline soils. We hypothesized that

Polycyclic Aromatic Carbon: A Key Fraction Determining the Light Absorption Properties of Methanol-Soluble Brown Carbon of Open Biomass Burning Aerosols.

The composition and radiative forcing of light-absorbing brown carbon (BrC) aerosol remain poorly understood. Polycyclic aromatics (PAs) are BrC chromophores with fused benzene rings. Understanding the occurrence and significance of PAs in BrC is challenging due to a lack of standards for many PAs. In this study, we quantified polycyclic aromatic carbon (PAC), defined as the carbon of fused benzene rings, based on molecular markers (benzene polycarboxylic acids, BPCAs). Open biomass burning aerosols (OBBAs) of 22 rainforest plants were successively extracted with water and methanol for the ana

Anamnestic immune response to dengue and decreased severity of yellow Fever.

A protective immunity against yellow fever, from cross-reactive dengue antibodies, has been hypothesized as an explanation for the absence of yellow fever in Southern Asia where dengue immunity is almost universal. This study evaluates the association between protective immunity from cross-reactive dengue antibodies with yellow fever infection and severity of the disease. The study population consisted of military personnel of a jungle garrison and its detachments located in the Ecuadorian Amazonian rainforest. The cross-sectional study employed interviews as well as seroepidemiological method

Intermediate forest cover and malaria risk in an Amazon deforestation frontier.

Malaria exposure risk, measured by anopheline infection rates, appears highest in Amazonian landscapes with approximately 50 % remaining forest cover, a common condition across the region. However, the effects of landscape configuration on the density of infected vectors and human malaria incidence remain poorly understood. A pilot natural experiment was carried out across 40 sites in a deforestation frontier in Acre state, Brazilian Amazon, where malaria is endemic. Sites were selected to represent a gradient of forest cover and deforestation levels under controlled conditions. We collected d

Bioactive Compounds, Antioxidant, and Antimicrobial Activity of Seeds and Mucilage of Non-Traditional Cocoas.

The biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest includes little-known cocoa species, which are essential resources for local communities. This study evaluated the bioactive compounds and antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of seeds and mucilage of four non-traditional cocoa species (Theobroma subincanum, T. speciosum, T. bicolor and Herrania nitida). Physico-chemical properties, minerals, vitamin C, organic acids, phenolics, and carotenoids were analysed by spectrophotometric and chromatographic techniques. The antioxidant activity was measured by ABTS and DPPH, along with the antimicrobial activ

Artificial intelligence-based model for the interpretation and reporting of standard automated perimetry.

PURPOSE: Standard automated perimetry has been the standard method for measuring visual field changes for several years. It can measure an individual's ability to detect a light stimulus from a uniformly illuminated background. In the management of glaucoma, the primary objective of perimetry is the identification and quantification of visual field abnormalities. It also serves as a longitudinal evaluation for the detection of disease progression. The development of artificial intelligence--based models capable of interpreting tests could combine technological development with improved access

Travel-Related Malaria Diagnosis on Karius Test Despite Negative Blood Smear.

Malaria remains a considerable challenge to international health, especially in returning travelers from endemic regions where exposure risk may be downplayed. Prompt and accurate diagnosis is crucial, especially when conventional diagnostic techniques are insufficient. This case report presents a 59-year-old man who developed fever, rash, and myalgia after returning from the Amazon rainforest. Initial laboratory tests demonstrated leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, transaminitis, and hyperbilirubinemia. Despite these abnormal results and a clinically suspicious presentation, malaria smears were ne

Novel diversity and distributions of myxozoans in amphibians from Ecuador with the description of a new species of Cystodiscus.

Among parasites with vertebrate hosts, myxozoans (Cnidaria) remain some of the least studied both taxonomically and geographically. We conducted the first reported surveys for myxozoans from amphibian hosts in Ecuador at two localities: a mid-elevation cloud forest on the Chocó region (western slopes of the Andes) and a lowland Amazonian tropical forest, east of the Andes. We sampled 177 gall bladders and 17 kidneys across the surveys. We found no evidence of myxozoans in the cloud forest site. Myxozoans of the genus Cystodiscus were encountered in the gallbladders of multiple amphibian specie
